Nigeria needs $500m to repair refineries' - Dr. Ibe Kachikwu

According to the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, the Federal Government needs about $500m to fix the nation’s crude oil refineries which have all been shut down. This he revealed at a forum organised by the Petroleum Club Lagos to celebrate his recent appointment as the NNPC GMD.

According to Dr. Kachikwu, the Port Harcourt Refinery, which was refining crude some weeks ago had stopped working and had since been shut down. Meanwhile, the Warri and Kaduna refineries still remain shut.

He said, "I was initially happy with the progress made at the Port Harcourt Refinery when it operated at 60 per cent capacity some weeks ago. But now, the capacity has dropped so low that we had to shut it down. We will need about $500m to fix them."

That's our problem in this country. We lack maintenance culture. The refineries have been so neglected that it decayed to the extent of using this huge sum to fix. If the needful was done, we wouldn't be reading this.

To think its just $500 million needed to maintain or repair the refineries! When a former petroleum minister embezzled a WHOPPING $20 Billion subtracting all those before her. And Nigerians are suffering in the midst of our plenty!!!

Sell off to private companies and begin to push for small module refineries. Privatization for now.

Diezani can fix it and it wont even dent all the billions she embezzled from Nigeria. It is rumoured that it was 13 billion pounds. Dont know how far that is true

Anonymous said...

The $500m will be spent and ttey will not work. Please SELL of the 3 refineries and provide all needed support to the two private refineries that are planned by Dangote and Ubah.

Any group that threatens to eliminate a country, is a Terrorist group. Bokoharam is not the only Terrorist group in Nigeria. BIAFRA is a Terrorist group and should be internationally recognized as such.

Then why still wasting time? Nigeria was able to pay the oil marketers a whopping amount of 413 billion Naira for them to import petroleum and we are still talking how to afford? $500m(equivalent to N33b) to repair our oil refineries. Is not penny wise palm foolish? In fact they know what they gain from the delay.

I sincerely believe that something is wrong somewhere. If the refineries were working recently, what happened overnight that we are now hearing a new story? Nigerians need to have the correct update of the position of the refineries. There is need to consolidate the economy. Stolen funds to be recovered with aggressive pursuit. Revenue need to be raked in, wastes to be eliminated.
Meanwhile there is need to build new refineries immediately as dependence on the ones is out of point. Yes I agree that the old ones need to be refurbished and upgraded so that there is good but effective plan to produce what we need despite our population. We will get there in Jesus name. Toks

we have the power to change things for the better but greed, and nonchalant attitude has taken us to the point of no return while we wait upon the Messiah for a permanent change.

Anonymous said...

I wont be surprised if it is PDP thugs that went to spoil the refineries overnight just to put the country in chaos. This time around, after they repair it, they should put trustworthy security men to guide the place or send an independent company to go and check the situation of refinery

Jimoh Rapport said...

500 to do what? Buhari hehe you are doing the same thing previous administrations did and you said you bringing change! It doesn't even cost $200 million to build a modern refinery in 2 years!

Please check DeZiani's GT acct for this amount quickly. Thanks
