Court awards N500 million to King Sunny Ade over copyrights infringement 30 years after he sued

A Federal High Court on Friday, November 13, awarded King Sunny Ade N500 million as damages for copyright infringement. Also included was an additional N3 million for prosecuting the case.
This is coming thirty years after the Juju music legend took record manufacturing company African Songs and its subsidiary Take Your Choice Stores to court.

The two companies were ordered to pay the sum by Justice James Tsoho of the Federal High Court in Lagos, while delivering judgment in the suit first instituted by the musician in 1975.
King Sunny Ade had stated in his statement of claim that in 1975, a contract dispute arose between him and the two companies culminating to a judgement delivered by Justice Dosumu presiding over a Lagos high court.

According to him, in the said judgement the court ordered the companies to return the master tapes of the original musical works produced under the label of the two companies by Sunny Ade and his green sport back to him, but before the master tape could be returned the chairman chief Executive Office of the two companies Chief Bolarinwa Abioro died.

Consequently, in a bid to retrieve the master Tapes Sunny Ade in 1997 dragged the two companies before a federal high court in Lagos, joined as co-defendants are, Lati Alagbada, Record manufacturing Nigeria limited, Ibukunola printers, Alhaja Awawu Ade Amodu, and M.O. Alagbada, who he alleged have been using the master tapes to produce inferior qualities of his musical works and sell them to members of the public thereby depriving him of his means of livelihood.

Many of these companies don't exist anymore though...

Lol. I understand that some of the owners of these companies are dead. KSA should ask the judge to help collect this money. They can arrange for a sharing formula afterwards.

Thank God that judgement is now being passed on copy right infringement. Those Igbos doing it will now stop or else face the law. The fear of Buhari's administration is the beginning of wisdom. For those shouting for change, change has started.

What hope does the common man have in our justice system? Why should it take this long to get victory on a man's sweat? This is a pyrrhic victory and is of no moment. Our justice system needs an urgent overhauling. May God help us

But let's be frank, it is mostly Igbo people that do piracy and sell in Idumota market or traffic.

@okafor richard If u know u cannot afford the CD for N2,500 you can leave it. Must u listen to the music? Pray to God to bless u so that u will be able to afford it instead of doing illegal piracy. You are removing food from somebody's table and killing his sweat by pirating his song. You wait and let the original owner of the music gain his money first, then you can now buy the CD when the price has dropped to N100

@richard okafor It is not by force to buy CD at N2,500. If u cannot afford it, tell God to bless you so that u will be able to afford it. You are removing food from the table of the original owner of the music by doing piracy and it is not fair because it is the person's sweat. If u like the music so much, u can wait for the original owner of the music to gain his money first. Then when the price drops to N100, you can now buy it but let the owner make his profit first. You greedy Igbo goat
