Ben Murray-Bruce reveals how he founded his Multi billion naira company with N20k his father borrowed him

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce revealed on twitter that his father borrowed him N20, 000 in 1980 to start his business, Silverbird Group. They are celebrating their 35th anniversary this year. He said his story is evidence that you do not need to steal to make it in Nigeria and when people started running their mouths, he said anyone with evidence that he stole to build his organization should show evidence. See some reactions after the cut...

The result of definitive of purpose, applied faith and positive mental attitude. The 20k Naira he borrowed from his father in today's valuation is just 44,000 naira. And this man turned nothing into something. Good job great man

That's good to know

Unknown said...

He should please stfu!
20k as at that time can do for you what 1 million or more can do for you today.
Corruption was not rampant back then, and even honest/hardworking civil servants could have access to such an amount without much stress.
Then the system started to rot, and their generation said or did nothing to stop it...... Some even participated in the rot and the result is what we see today.
What roles did he play in curbing that rot before it snowballed into this cesspit of corruption? That I would like to know.

20k was a lot of money in 1980. Then 55 kobo exchanged for 1 USD. Only directors of companies and top government workers earned up to 1k a month.

He is lucky he had a rich dad to give him such a heavy loan.

evidence of what? why dont he tell nigeria's the real value of 2ok in 1980, because my father bought his first car in 1979 with just 2,800 naira. So Bruce li or ben bruce , that money is equivalent to 10 million naira now, try give that to Nigeria youth and see if they wont do more than you...........congrats all thesame

Stories..notn rili true in Nigeria not even humans cuz they are fake. If an American or European Mogul says this its easy to undrstnd cuz there would always be records.

20K! Huge money in 1980. In 1987 from Enugu to Harcourt by wagon was N13.00. My school fees in Uniport was N90.00 So fast track back to 1980 N20,000 was a LOT of money then. Today parents are struggling to provide food and accommodation for their children. If we all had fathers like you i'm sure we won't be tempted to make money by stealing. N20,000 is the average monthly earnings of most 35year old Nigerians. We thank God for your Company.

Encouraging! Bt pls bare in mind dat 20,000naira in d 80's is equivalent to $20,000 or even more in todays economy. Also, u had a beta atmosphere n blossoming economy in those days for virtually any serious business to grow.

It is very difficult now, but not impossible

See the way people are running their mouth
Even if his father borrowed him 100ml naira, it definitely took more than a huge capital to build such great empire. Why can't people believe in honest and hard work again?
I fear who no fear Nigerian youth on social media.

N20,000.00 in 1980 when N20.00 use to be the highest naira denomination, when N2.00 equal 1GBP, when N1.00 equals $2, when we still have ONE PENNY, FIVE KOBO, TEN KOBO, FIFTY KOBO (in notes) etc.... Oga Ben you started BIG; you are just very lucky among many people. ask who Cosmos Maduka started and you will know there is a big difference.

privilege talking. Do you know what 20,000 naira was in 1980? let me give you a sense. 1 naira was equal to 2 dollars. so technically his pops loaned him $40,000. America was in a great recession. Roundtrip tickets to New York cost 400 naira. His pops did not give him chump change and he did not start with the acute disadvantage that is so characteristic of our society today. even back in those days, that money was something few people ever saw or needed to see. A brand new Peugeot 504 GL car cost 7000 naira. So Ben, dont thank Nigeria, thank the system that allowed privilege and advantage to prop you up for guaranteed success. The advantage you experienced is called money begetting money. It yields power and opens uncommon doors through name recognition and what money can buy. While I celebrate with you I dont want peeps to be deceived. You were a high dollar roller back in the days with this type of story so let us not get stuff twisted my erstwhile senator. Love ya.

How many of you knows who Ben Bruce father was in 1980. Most people just use social media without myopic and blind mindset. My heart bleeds for some Nigerians who have refused to learn despite their so-called level of education.

Anonymous said...

Where's the evidence Mr Bruce? 20k in 1980 is a couple of millions now. How many parent s have that to loan to their kids?

Anonymous said...

Honestly this man need someone to verify his messages before tweeting them. 20k then a lot of money now so why are you forming voltron oga! The other day he was defending MTN for disobeying the law of the land. Says much of a law maker in the senate.

In 1980, a brand new Peugeot 504 1980 Model was sold for N10,000.00. Now consider how much a brand new Peugeot 2015 Model of that standing (504) because i dont know if they still produce 504. Then that would tell you exactly how much he got from his Dad at that time.

LINDA, IT is "His father LENT him" not "His father BORROWED him." He borrowed from his father. ABEG, correct grammar.

Linda "...with the 20k his father lent him"

True indeed...several years later silverbird got a massive cash infusion via DG NTA thanks to NTA budgetary allocation.

His father lent him not borrowed him. Employ people. U need editors

Anonymous said...

Dear Linda, his father either lent him money or he borrowed from his father. "His father borrowed him" is not correct.

20k then must have been a very huge amount

For your cakes and small chops, add us on 2be081f6 to place your order, thanks.

Unknown said...

That's inspiring. We need to note that 20k then is equivalent to at least 20m today. The good news is that you didn't blow it as was common place among children of the rich then. You are a good example of a good leader but your story is certainly not that of rags to riches... naaahhhhh! It was opportunity well utilized and well managed. Much respect Sir!

What about when u were NTA DG? Abege! And the way u rip off producers in ur galleria plus the numerous months your staff go without salary and when u eventually sack them, u still don't pay. Pls do us a favour, stop disturbing us social media. I would only listen to u if u invented Twitter or something better.

Juleslouis said...

Wow! That's great. But that was then, when naira had great value. 20k can't make much difference now.

Unknown said...

They just think everyone is illiterate and don't know what was the dollar rate in 1980 compare to the dollar rate in 2015... at least in the 50s 60s,70s and 80s my dad will also tell me that things were way cheaper. Even when he bought his peugeot 504 at the rate of 230 naira, can you even use 230 naira to transport yourself daily?

Unknown said...

I like the word of encouragement that you don't need to steal to make it Nigeria, he shouldn't be calling 20k in 1980 like it's a small money

Anonymous said...

bruce case is just like that of trump that said his father gave him small $1,000,000to start a business. 20k as of 80's is a lot of money.

Anonymous said...

*lent him..linda.

Anonymous said...

Abi? LENT IS THE WORD not the naija 'borrow me' Tell Linda! Which school Linda go sef? Could never have been UI for sure.

Anonymous said...

lol ...
this guy that stole nta's money and equipment to start silverbird. that is why silverbird quality is the same with that of NTA. these men dont know nothing is hidden.

Anonymous said...

Hey Senator Ben, You were screwing Madam Stella OBJ and only grew bigger after being DG of NTA. We know and remember all that Ben, we do!

Anonymous said...

U evaluation is wrong. N20K then is upto millions of naira now. Compare the naira to pounds then and compare the equivalent pounds to naira now.

Unknown said...

Funny but true

Anonymous said...

LENT HIM!!! WHO WAS YOUR ENGLISH TEACHER????
MONEY HIS FATHER LENT HIM!!!

Anonymous said...

This man is on hard drugs

Anonymous said...

Not really. While it's still a substantial achievement. 20k in 1980 was a lot of money and having a rich father with connections doesn't make things more difficult. Almost another Donal Trump moment #richkidproblems
