The sponsor of the bill and Chairman, Senate Committee on Defence, Senator Chris Anyanwu, said the bill, which had been in the senate since 2013, amongst other things 'seeks to make a comprehensive legislation on sexual offences by criminalizing certain acts such as sexual tourism, child pornography and cultural and religious sexual offences in our criminal jurisprudence".
The Senate passed the bill yesterday during the "rush hour" plenary session in which 46 bills were passed in 10 minutes.

When was the problem of rape in Nigeria ever blamed on the character of penal measure statutorily reserved for the offense upon conviction for it, which from time immemorial has been life imprisonment pursuant to section 358 of the Criminal Code?
What is news in the National Assembly merely affirming the position of the law as has been since Amalgamation...
The problem of rape in Nigeria, as far as I know, derives from and has continued to fester due to the prudish attitude of our culture to sex or sex-related matters...
This unfortunately has resulted in rape victims being the objects of scandal and ridicule, and not the perpetrators of the wicked and dastardly act itself...
Sex matters are spoken of in hush tones, let alone speaking up (for justice) on being a sex-offender's victim...

Marrying underage girls is WRONG, and as seriously wrong as kidnapping, robbery, theft, rape, incest and child pornography, combined. Northern leaders should stop marrying underage girls. Children belong in schools, not bedrooms of geriatrics or anyone's bedroom. WHOEVER MARRIES OR MOLESTS AN UNDERAGE CHILD SHOULD BE JAILED FOR LIFE. The Nigerian Senate needs to stop passing laws to favour themselves. They must uphold the law and jail the criminals within the Senate who married underage girls.
