Abducted school girls: First Lady asks women to stop protesting

Patience Jonathan has asked women to stop protesting over the abducted Chibok girls, Daily Trust reports. Mrs Jonathan expressed her frustration yesterday evening at the unwillingness of the Borno state first lady and other Borno state women to work with her on the missing girls. She said she can't be crying more than the bereaved.

According to Mrs Jonathan who burst into tears as she expressed her displeasure, she said she had called for a meeting with first ladies of the various states as well as some borno state officials to enquire on how the girls were kidnapped and find a way out but was suprised to see that some first ladies attended but the first lady of the state were the unfortunate incident happened did not honour her invitation. Continue...

First Ladies of  Nasarawa, Zamfara, Kaduna, Katsina, Kogi, Gombe, Benue, Abia and Akwa Ibom States attended the meeting as well as Borno State Commissioner of Police, Commissioner for Women Affairs, the principal of Chibok Government Secondary School, the chairman of Chibok Local Government Area, the divisional police officer in the area and the troops on duty when the girls were abducted.

A visibly disappointed Mrs Jonathan said Mrs Shettima was being unconcerned over the girls' abduction. She accused the Borno state women of playing games with the whole kidnapping story.
"Before all these killings, I called and told the first lady of Borno State to let us come together. She answered me yes, but when the kidnap happened, I called her, she did not answer me. I invited her, she did not turn up even up till today. No woman will fold her arms when her house is on fire. Today my house is on fire.
"Before last Friday, I called her and she promised to attend the Friday's meeting here. Bit to our greatest surprise, she sent her commissioner for women affairs. Also today, she sent her commissioner for women affairs. She is the mother of Borno State. She is the first mother of these missing girls. I am their grandmother. She is not coming out. All Nigerian women are calling her. If she is not concerned and she says she doesn't want her people to be safe, then it is left to her. If you tell us you are not crying, why should I cry more than the bereaved. If I cry more than the bereaved, the world would ask me a question.
"If after today, Borno women say we should not help them, then Nigerian women, don't demonstrate again. If you demonstrate and police do you anything, you are on your own. Borno women are playing games. Nigerian women should not go out for demonstration. Don't use school children for demonstration again. Borno women are not ready for cooperation"
"People are dying. How can you play politics when you see your fellow human beings dying. Nigerian women, I beg you to support me. Why we will join our husbands to kill others. We want the killings to stop. If we don't get to know the whereabouts of our daughters, the next thing is they (Boko Haram) will get to us. I am not accusing anybody. My own is let us stop killings and kidnapping. Let us put a stop to this.
"We don't know what might happen. We don't wear bullet-proofs. I am not exempting my self or my husband. If I am found guilty, let me go instead of blood to flow. If our constitution is the problem, let them amend it. Today's meeting will not end because the abducted children are still not out. If you say I should go and sleep, I would go and sleep. But if you say we should move forward to see the end of this, we would go forward", she said.

All this blame game is not needed right now. The government as a whole has failed us. These girls need to be found to restore some confidence.

The 'last lady' is not making any sense, why is she trying to put everything on the 1st lady of borno, like if she had honored her invitation the girls would have been found by now, Oshisco. Madam patience pls shut your dirty mouth and tell your husband to do something meaningful for once! Like someone said earlier, Jonathan is the worst thing that ever happened to Nigeria, he's so incompetent! Only God can help us, Lord be with the girls. #BringBackOurGirls

Sigh, this woman and her husband are so wrong for so many reasons and her shameful display just upsets me some more.
This blame shifting tactic isn't going to work at all at all.
1) 3 WHOLE WEEKS, after the girls were kidnapped, this woman is just coming out to shed tears. Where was she the day it happened, a week after it happened, 2 weeks after it happened? It is now that Nigerians are calling for her husband's head that she has come to the realisation that she is the grandmother of Borno. Please take multiple seats
2) Has it ever occurred to you that the Borno state first lady might have been reaching out to her since then with no response and now that she finally feels the need to speak, she thinks she can just reach out to the Borno first lady and the woman will jump to Abuja.
3) The Borno first lady's place is in Borno, not in Abuja for some aimless meeting. Like Mama Peace has rightly said, the Borno first lady is the mother of Borno and her duty is with those women whose daughters were kidnapped. Not all the women are able to come to Abuja to protest, majority of the biological mothers of those girls aren't even protesting in Abuja, they are instead out in forests looking for signs and traces of their daughters so it will be very wrong for the Borno first lady to leave their side at this time just to go and break bread with some power-hungry woman, who can always get off her high horse and head to Borno if she was truly interested in seeing what went wrong.

My main problem with this clip is not her horrendous grammar but her lack of composure. If you're a "leader" and you can't keep yourself composed in trying times, what hope is there for the common masses? I thought she was trying to reassure the families of the abducted that the girls would be found and brought home to their families...and she get all hysterical, how should the grieving families react after seeing this? She's basically saying just give up hope all is lost.

It is really sad that the kidnapping of these girls is being taken so lightly.... In Nigeria we tend to be so self-centred if its not close to our homes we can't be bothered.

Our journalist weren't even giving this kidnapping the facetime it deserved until international pressure stepped in.

My honest opinion is we should stop trying to take these girls' lives lightly. People should come out of their houses and protest the way we did during "OCCUPY NAIJA". Shutdown the country till these girls are found....

Its really sad. Only God knows if they have raped them repeatedly. Some of them might even be pregnant and all... And people are still sitting on their high horses relaxing....

Shame on all of us... Shame on Nigeria

She's gone nuts. Sorry to say

#bring back our girls. Period!!!

After reading her "speech" your heading is very misleading. I don't think that's what she is saying. she never said stop protesting madam Linda.

#Bringbackourgirls... it beats my imagination where Nigerians blame everything on the FG. the abduction of over 200 girls is indeed appalling, However certain questions to me havent been answered. Borno state has a Governor, deputy, memebers of its state assembly, memebers of the national assembly, commissioners, chairmen, councilors, elderstatemen, village heads' finally and most importantly AREABOYS... now with all this arms of government present the locals of chibok and neighbouring villges all claim they do not knw the whereabout of over 200 girls???? THEY ALL LIE!!! My Dear Northeners i appeal to you all to arise and search for your children. Through the movies and news we watch when one child gets missing abroad, the entire community take up the responsibility to search for the missing child and not their President... oh ofcos with the help of a government agency ( Police). Jonathan ofcos is stressed and pressured with so many issues including the current scurity status of the country.... My people the earlier we go into the forests with our dogs to search for our children, wvwn if it means BOKO HARAM blowing up efforts, Its important we try.... Carrying Placards wont move the leader of Boko Haram... Rather He be Laughing.

Borno state governor, the First Lady and In fact all the northern elders have a hand in this abduction. They have created an enabling environment for the insurgents they helped to creat. I say split this country already cos this sovereignty is just a charade

Thank you jare. Your first lady is too dumb to know that Hausa women are very conservative and they don't hug the limelight like creek women.

Thank you Evalsam and 2:44PM for not buying the fake lady's Nollywood drama.

Anonymous said...

A market woman is better than this Nollywood dramatist. Very rass!

Anonymous said...

Seriously! I have thought about this hard and it's still the same way I feel why are those northerners and leaders seem so unperturbed right from day one. That's to tell us what we are getting into, everyone is calling for the head of Jonathan they don't want him to be president because of his complacency but again who do we vote for? Apc that is full of staunch muslims? Mind you I have nothing against the muslims what scares me about them is their take on violence. Seriously we should all think hard.

Abeg let this woman go and take several seats with her incoherent speech. Unlike the First Lady, the Borno governor's wife is more needed at home rather than attending some harebrained meeting in Abuja that will yield no premium.

If Mrs Jonathan is serious about helping to find the girls, let her move to Borno where the incident happened or is her behind glued to a seat in Abuja?

Suddenly she wakes up and begins to shed crocodile tears 3 weeks after the kidnap...suddenly she's summoning everyone to her royal palace in Abuja...suddenly she's pointing fingers and throwing her weight all over the place....

Nigerian people have been clamoring for the release of those girls since it happened and now that the campaign is gaining global acclaim, Mrs " mother of the nation" suddenly wakes up seeking relevance.

I am so glad she made a public spectacle of herself with her warped grammar and fake tears. The world now knows we have no leaders in Nigeria.

Grammer or no grammer I just feel some shallow minded Nigerians are just trying to follow any trend that comes up. Whether she is sincere or not saying stuff and trending this action will not help the situations rather than worsening it. We should all pray for the safe return of the girls.

She looks sincere to me. For those ppl taking advantage of the situation by trending stuff on social media, May God help u. The First Lady speaks English better today than some university graduates. I could see a tensed woman. Her hand were shaking. Nigerians Shld not take advantage of this and focus on the issue on ground.

Hi every one.I tried my best to read every ones comment. personally, i think this abduction case is political all aimed as making a mockery of Jonathan's regime. I am serving in the north. the first time, in maduguri, when about 20girls were kidnapped and the young boys were killed in the Federal government sch, all schs were been asked to closed down by the Federal govt and students were asked to be relocated to a safe place in the city. if u visit Maduguri, u wud not belive dat this insurgent exist. but chibok refuse. how can a sch not hav the list and faces of their students. we all watch American movies, the sch shud show us this girls, their names, their ages. My fellow nigerians, indeed this girls may be kidnapped, but something smells fishy. instead of castigating our president, lets pray that God gives him the same wisdom he gave solomon. even if he steps down, must a northern rule before we can have pece, do dey own Nigeria?

Damochedxb said...

You have failed miserably by saying the first lady is not from that region. The problem with many Nigerians is our cluelessness. An incident happened in a state, shouldn't it occur to any right thinking person that the authorities of that state would have their hands full already? Why won't the first lady get off her fat butt and go to the place to visit the affected parents? Nigeria and misplaced priority. .
