Two die as building collapses in Akure this morning

2 people have been confirmed dead after a building under construction collapsed early this morning around 7 in Akure, Ondo State. Reports say the building which was to be used as a boarding house for a private school, came crumbling down as workers on the site arrived to begin the day's job. Two teenagers died in the incident while two others sustained injuries and have been rushed to the hospital for medical attention

Residents in the area say the area is a swampy one and it could be that the foundation of the building was not well done and this  led to its collapse. Continue...

Speaking on the incident to Sahara Reporters, Ondo state Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Bade Omoloja said, "This is a total calamity due to the loss of life. This building had no approval to begin with because our men at the task force unit of the ministry have been here on two different occasions to stop work. Obviously, very poor quality of work was carried out at the site. There are so many building outside here that doesn't have approvals." he said

Men of the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Red Cross Society of Nigeria, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), State Security Services (SS) and other rescue agencies were all at the site to help with the rescue.

The ministry saddled with the responsibility of taking care of events like this, were always lackadaisical about genuine complaint from people around structures like this, once they collect bribe, any building can grow anywhere, a lot of houses are prone to collapse in Akure because the activities of a lot of quarry situated in the town are not being monitored, they carried out their activities without recourse to the environment, whenever complaints were laid, the owners hide under being friends to Mr Governor, or one commissioner or directors in the ministry. It is only when things like this happen, they suddenly remember their statutory responsibilities. well, there is God oooooooo.
