Former Ijaw Youth Council president and founder of the Niger Delta People's Volunteer Force, Mr Asari Dokubo has given his opinion concerning child marriage in Nigeria. Below is what he wrote on his Facebook page a few days ago...

That clause "as muslims" deserve more clarification and understanding. I'm not an Islamic scholar but I know that right or law you are stating is not in the Holy Qu'ran. Even marrying a second to fourth wife comes with conditions which you must meet. The only claim they are using is an hadith which can be sum up to be a lifestyle of prophet(peace be unto him). It is said that a close friend of the prophet gave his daughter to the prophet at a tender age and the young girl naturally love the prophet perhaps they are friends. When she approach teenage like 13 or so as she was mature for marriage, the rasul married her which she gladly accept. That age cannot be verified from the hadith but scholars use methodology in which I don't know but she was ripe for marriage and child bearing even though Allah the omnipotent never gave her one. My opinion is this, even if people want to practice this early marriage of a thing in the name religion, they should remember that era is different from ours now. Then, there was no educational system rather than learning the religion and artisan. I believe during the olden era in this our country or before amalgamation, a lot of grand mothers were married at a young age as well and that is due to the situation then. So in this era, they should respect the right for the girl education if truly Islam respect women as right stated in the holy book. Also, it shouldn't be forceful or even a persuasive thing but freedom. They should remember that not all laws in the hadith are implementable to it letter but it has been modernised to this era. We should open our brains and mind. There are better things we should abide by as laws that we aren't. Corruption, intolerance, illiteracy, hatred and others. We should focus on things that we better our society.

I really do not know the reason for this discussion.A law that is good for a cross section of people based on their belief CANNOT BE IMPOSED on the entire populace of a country as they do not share same believe .In essence,there will be no law,however the people that want to practise what they preach should go ahead,God is in charge. I know people make reference to the prophet marrying a young girl, Aisha - yes she was BETROTHED to him when she was young. Now the mistake most people make is - in that era it was very common amongst Muslims and non-Muslims and it was more or less a BETHROTHAL matter - the young girls' families give them away to these men for whatever reason BUT the men are not known to sleep with them until they are of age (I am NOT in support of betrothal either! just giving the history behind it). That said - we knowing about aisha's betrothal to the prophet is through a hadith - the teachings of the prophet, how he lived and engaged with people (some are classified as authentic if they can be traced and others are not). For Muslims, Quran supersedes hadiths - NOTHING in the Quran says marry off young girls for crying out loud! Hadiths are meant to be examples of how we live but in this day and age not all actions in hadiths can be reasonably/practicably applied. That clause "as muslims" deserve more clarification and understanding. I'm not an Islamic scholar but I know that right or law you are stating is not in the Holy Qu'ran. Even marrying a second to fourth wife comes with conditions which you must meet. The only claim they are using is an hadith which can be sum up to be a lifestyle of prophet(peace be unto him). It is said that a close friend of the prophet gave his daughter to the prophet at a tender age and the young girl naturally love the prophet perhaps they are friends. When she approach teenage like 13 or so as she was mature for marriage, the rasul married her which she gladly accept. That age cannot be verified from the hadith but scholars use methodology in which I don't know but she was ripe for marriage and child bearing even though Allah the omnipotent never gave her one. My opinion is this, even if people want to practice this early marriage of a thing in the name religion, they should remember that era is different from ours now. Then, there was no educational system rather than learning the religion and artisan. I believe during the olden era in this our country or before amalgamation, a lot of grand mothers were married at a young age as well and that is due to the situation then. So in this era, they should respect the right for the girl education if truly Islam respect women as right stated in the holy book. Also, it shouldn't be forceful or even a persuasive thing but freedom. They should remember that not all laws in the hadith are implementable to it letter but it has been modernised to this era. We should open our brains and mind. There are better things we should abide by as laws that we aren't. Corruption, intolerance, illiteracy, hatred and others. We should focus on things that we better our society.
