Don Jazzy Statement – Re: Anti-Rap Accusation

Don Jazzy's statement below...
My bro I am so sorry about what I said. Pls do not take it the wrong way. I would do my best to explain wot exactly I meant Sir.
I like rap. I wish I could rap but unfortunately I can’t. That aside what I mean’t was simply the fact that I don’t know any Nigerian parent above 40 that can recite our rap word for word. That would be something. If there are hip fathers and mothers in Nigeria I don’t think they would be more than 5% of parents.

Our parents love to dance and sing along to songs that they like and brag to there friends that their son is the one singing. You can only imagine how upset they would be inside if them and their friends don’t understand or can’t rap along with their loved son.

Ok i apologize for using the words “not proud of” ‘cos you could say a parent is proud of a child that is a surgeon and can brag to his or her friends about that doesn’t mean that the parent can join the son to carry out a major operation on a patient. Doctor Sid for instance used to be a rapper (and yes i know he was not the best at it). His father used to hate that he was a musician. I personally think he was just frustrated ‘cos he didn’t understand the kind of music he was doing.

Today his father is a true believer since he could sing “Something about you” to his wife. Davido’s father didn’t like his music until he heard “Da mi duro”. Obviously he can join his friends to sing along to the song and be proud about the moment. I have had this discussion with some of my rapper friends too – M.I can tell u that his biggest song today should be African Rapper, Jesse jags – Wetin dey, Ice Prince – Oleku, Saucekid – Undergee or Carolina, Mode nine – Cry. And all this songs are big and widely accepted ‘cos of the sweet melodies on the chorus, meaning more kids and adults alike can sing along. I might be wrong but i have succeeded in this game by knowing the market i’m selling to.

I think i just speak the truth too much sometimes and it gets me in trouble ‘cos i like to be real to myself and everyone around me. That’s one of the reasons why i don’t like granting interviews.
To those that feel offended by my statement, i am sincerely sorry. I definitely wish us all well. No bad belle or bad blood towards anyone. I do hope i have been able to explain how i mean’t what i said sha na there the english wey i know reach. Thanks for reading.

this guy...see don or what u call your self????? the word RAP...ITS A combination of words to give HIT to a song...and if you cant understand what someone is saying is becouse basically you dont knw and u dont love music...some one like me who is not a musicia...can hear most of the things that the BEST RAPPER IN THE WORLD SINGS(TWISTER,along side with PITBULL,B..I...G..,LUDACRIS,KANYE WEST,JAY C)and the rest, to mention a few...am a girl and i understand mostly eveything they sing..and that happens becouse i love music..inshort...am inlove with music...so, sometimes you better shot up and think b4 u open this dirty mouth of yours in poblic.

It's Don Jazzy again!!

I'm a BIG fan of rap.. Real rap. I'm less than 40, my parents aren't. I totally agree with Don Jazzy. In our society, it's the commercial stuff that sells. Hardcore, not so much. No offence, but alot of the older rappers and musicians (especially awon on-hit-wonders) were able to bang cos of their sing-along melodies.. That's Naija. The guy na biz man, he's studied the market - he's ibo too.

No need for hating, if u don't understand his explanation, there's a reason... U r dumb. Not his fault.

I agree with him even though am a lover of rap. Rap still has a long way to go in Nigeria. MI is doing a good job promoting it and late Da Grin also did a good job.

Who is this alonso person? Look at the POLITE reply and explanation Don Jazzy gave and you come here chatting rubbish. Don Jazzy is talking about parents that are over 40 years old. Are you over 40 years old alonso? You can barely write English, cannot spell the word 'PUBLIC' and you are telling a well to do polite man to shut up.

I see that nowadays many Nigerian parents only know how to pop babies into this world like rabbits but when it comes to giving said children a sound and moral upbringing, they fail woefully as evidenced by this alonso of a character. This is my opinion and anyone who insults me will have badluck follow you for the rest of this year as well as next year!

Don jazzy i'll advise u to continue whispering to dbanj's ear and he will reconstruct the words for u cos it seems when u talk u end up getting on pples nerves.
Even olamide drop bars pass dr sid and d'prince.Do u think it's easy to pen down bars.
If u say commercial rappers sells more wetin ur crew dey sing, garry song. One's parent cant be proud if their child sounds lyk d'prince dat confused guy,Abeg wetin be him genre of music.
This apology is not accepted becos it shows he is still bragging with the word sha in d apology. Why would u add SHA.
I dont blame him na 9ja i blame since y'll kiss dis guys asses and hype dem lyk no tomorrow.Even on twitter pple are still kissing his ass rather dan confront him.
Donjazzy ever since u signed GOOD music u don dey talk trash and ur crew no better pass choc boiz.Where did u put the lyks of MODE9,M.I,OLAMIDE AND VECTOR.

I agree with Don Jazzy completely. My brother is a rap artiste and he has a hard time getting my mum to understand what he is saying so he has learned to make songs with choruses that she can relate to. That way she stops hassling him and enjoying his songs and even using it as ringtones and he gets away with being a rap artiste.

Anonymous said...

Don Jazzy is right there. some of these rappers, at times u may not be able to fathom what they are saying but if the chorus makes sense, the audience can be carried along.

Alonso or Olofo,i can see you like Rap music. They call him Jay Z not JAY C,ode oponu.....how many modenine raps can you rap along with him,how many shows have you seen him? Alonso The JAY C or na Ibadan pronunciation u take pronounce his name?

When someone who has excelled in his field of endeavor speaks on issues bordering on his area of operation, it's called educating the ignorant. Yes I know lot of people would say I'm a Mohits faithful but I'd proudly beat my chest and say yes because they amongst other talents in this country has put our name on the global mirror. Don Jazzy is an icon to many youths today and families alike talk more of the employment opportunities he and Mohits has created today. Back in the days which parent would say his/her ward is a musician? Answer is none. It's high time we started being indigenous in our musical careers so that both the young and old alike would identify with us. That way we move our industry forward and economy also. You would marvel at the number of employment created by our musical industry which is yet to explode. Why do the West flock our industry? It's because of the fact that they see the future in us. Tuface, Wizkid, P-Square and of course my dear Mohitian Generals have made this country proud by having international record deals. Please please and please lets learn to read between the lines. IDJA said he is not proud of our rap and it's a fact. Do you think you can sound more western than a westerner? If you want to rap, make it unique so that the westerners would want to listen to it. Why would a white youth do his version of Oliver Twist? If D'Banj was singing in "oyibo" accent do you think Ryan Parrot and The Rumours would even listen to it talk more of rendering their own version? I have said my piece and let it be known that Don Jazzy and Mohits are successful today because they have a good knowledge of what the market wants. My name is and still remains Toscar Roberts (A Mohitian Soldier) Oooossseeee.

Don Jazzy has made a lot of sense with his explanation. Its the truth.

lmao..I v never dropped a comment before but i just had to after this one...lol that alonso babe is just funny...awon rappers...lol...mehn don jazzy has a point and thats the reason rappers like mode9 have not blown yet because we don't really appreciate all that hard core rap..what we like are entertainers not rappers...so give us a nice tune, put some pidgin or yoruba or igbo, feature sum1 we already know an dyou might just make a hit..lol

Anonymous said...

I get what he is saying. I just wish he had kept whatever he previously said to himself.

I'm not sure but I think M.I is probably the only rapper who doesn't need anyone singing on his tracks to turn them to hits. Maybe it's because I'm a huge fan.

Nigerians don't give a damn about rap music. No disrespect to Ice Prince but look at Oleku, Brymo's part and the crazy beat are what really made the song a massive hit. Nigerians prefer songs they can sing-along to and wine their waists to in the club. They don't care about what you're saying. That's why you have artists like Davido doing so well despite always repeating the same sentences over and over again in his songs. Or Tiwa Savage coming out with girly, light, and catch songs like Kele Kele and Love me.
Where is Ikechukwu? He is a hardcore rapper but Naija people no dey do dat kain tin. Dey no dey relate. Naeto C has adjusted just fine.
To rappers, pretty much, the key to success is to have catchy (sing-along) hooks with nice beats.

Yes, because you can talk doesn't mean you open your mouth wide and rant anything from it. Freedom of speech has got limitations (If you don't know, go check your secondary school government).

Someone tweeted the exact words of what Don Jazzy said and I didn't find it funny. I'm not a musician but the words are bad when you read it without knowing what he was driving @. Before we talk in public or address the public, we have to think, and while talking, talk extensively (give details of what you mean)and in simple terms. This will save you and your listeners some drama.

That aside, people are killing themselves and careers on that site called Twitter. I noticed most people with thousands or hundreds of followers, rant trash and are very rude, feeling like Lords/Queens. *Drops Mic*

Rap like poetry is just spoken words that represent a culture. so shut ur dirt mouth up.

Hejis said...

He's so on point. He's is not a don 4 nothing. Sing-along-songs re what the larger community wants. I can't go to a club and listen or dance to what I don't really understand. That's why Dbang, Tuface, P-square re on top. Mode9, M.I and the rest will always be second fiddle if they don't sing for general family entertainment. In "African rapper number one", Flavor really murdered the song. M.I's verse was as if he was featured. The don has spoken so let all mortals q up behind him *winks*

Don jazzy is absolutely right. Rap is not something we 9ja guys and babes really really enjoy. We as a people don't really understand what you guys rap about. That is why 9ja musicians are smilling to the bank because we no longer patronize those American rap stars cos we do not understand the rap we only dance to the beat at all times. Does 9ice rap, 2face nko?Dbanj nko? Psquare dey rap? This are some of the best selling artiste in 9ja. They are not rappers.

Am a BIG mohits fan, even my friends know I will go any length to defend mohits anywhere but I think some of the words don jazzy used are hurtful and disrespectful to some people.I am of the opinion that nobody should hate on another man's hustle, I agree that these rappers don't sell as much as d'banj, 2face and the likes but I have not heard them complain(at least to my own knowledge) so why should we take their matters up and so far they don't come to you asking for bread, I think it's best to leave them in their circle doing what they know how to do best and that's rap. This is my honest opinion. God bless!!!

Haba...why all the anger on this site? Make we relax abeg...on don jazzy: he's a bad ass producer (magical really). He is a good manager. And what he said, in nigeria, is true. Even if it hurts us rappers. I think if we don't agree with him, what we should do is refine our game. Make it so that our parents can sing to it. Make it so that everyone can jive to it. M.I did that with 'anoti' (that's why m.I is the king!). The thing is, in music, as in anything, you chose between both sides. Either you want to follow a seemingly more complex and 'artistic' way, and do it for the love cause you won't be mainstream, or u go for the simpler, seemingly less artistic form, which will be much more mainstream and commercial. The thing therefore would be: can you handle both sides? Can you make your work and talent more commercial? Take m.I for instance: he can be very succesful commercially as he did with m.I 1 and m.I 2:the movie. Yet he is one of the most lyrically diverse emcees this side of the world: check out his illegal music 1 mixtape: he pulled out all the different styles there. He is so good lyrically even mode himself is excited about him. And mode, being who he is, is hardly suprised (the BET decimation was massive!). Dagrin to took it to another level (The only one in his area closest to him (and he is still far by miles) is olamide). That's just what I have to say. @Alonso: no mind them jare! (lol). Big up! A girl hiphoper. Massively cool!
