US youngest murderer, who was jailed at 12 set to be freed from prison at the age of 29

The youngest convicted murderer in the United States will walk free from prison for the first time since he was 12 years old in less than two weeks.

Curtis Fairchild Jones and his sister Catherine admitted to killing their father's girlfriend, Sonya Nicole Speights, in 1999, when they were just 12 and 13 years old respectively.

Though it was initially believed that they killed her over jealousy of their father's love, it was later revealed that the siblings planned to kill their father and a male relative living with them in their Port St John, Florida, home, whom they claimed was sexually abusing them.

When they realized their cries for help were not being answered, they organized the plan to kill all three.

Catherine Jones had previously told her brother that the male relative had watched her in the shower and masturbated while she cried. That night she wrote in her journal, 'I'm going to kill everybody'.
The organization now known as the Department of Children and Families acknowledged signs of sexual abuse in the home but had closed the investigation days before the incident.
Catherine told Curtis her plan and they decided to use the 9mm semi-automatic that their father kept in his bedroom.
But after they shot and killed Speights, reality set in and the children ran into the woods near their home and hid until police found them the following morning.

The siblings, now aged 29 and 30, became the youngest children in the country's history to be tried as adults for first-degree murder.
They pleaded to second-degree murder and were sentenced to 18 years in prison followed by a lifetime of probation.
Curtis, who has not spoken publicly about his release, will leave prison in two weeks as an ordained minster and will be able to live on his own for the first time.
He had a brief taste of freedom in 2004 when he and several other kids ran from a juvenile detention center after Hurricane Frances knocked down the facility's fence. He was caught 24 hours later and 318 days were added to his sentence.
His sister Catherine, who found love and marriage via a pen pal while incarcerated, is expected to be released sometime in July.
Because they will be on probation for life, any violation of the conditions they agree to could sent them back to prison.
Each sibling's conditions include: paying $50 per month toward the cost of supervision after the first 18 months of release, not using intoxicants in excess, consulting probation officers before moving and other agreements.

Hate to be a race baiter....but this would never have happened to a Caucasian child. My heart breaks for these children...yes. Children. The cries for help against this traumatic sexual abuse were not heard and it was even proven and yet these children were not removed from the environment. Sure. Killing is never the answer but in their little minds that was the answer. They even an into the woods to hide after. See that fool that killed people via drunk driving. Got off because of affluenza...privilege white teenager! The system sure is skewed..smh!

I dnt think their sentence is all that fair. While the white US teen that killed nine people might be tried as a mental patient, sexual abused teens spent 17 years in prison.

Lol @ not using intoxicants in excess.
Hope they have been Reformed.

These two have already been set up to fail. The terms of their probation is way too hard. For people who have been locked up for eighteen years and soon to be released, where and how do they expect them to get the fifty dollars to pay monthly. They have no jobs. No one is going to hire them once they get out. Even people on a years probation do not keep to the terms of their so called probation because it is very unrealistic. The Department of Corrections needs to come up with a better alternative for these two otherwise they are already headed back to prison even before their anticipated release. They already paid for the crime they committed why dog them for the rest of their lives. Na wa!!

I feel horrible for the kidsvthey were and given that there was proven sexual abuse the sentence seemed way too harsh. I wonder if they had be Caucasians and not Latino as the picture shows if this judgement would have been so harsh.
The system failed to protect but same system was quick to lock them up.

that was wicked! to send a 12 & 13 years old to 18yrs in prison, how wil tht help them psychologically ..where they treated right in prison? the young man looks bitter not like a minster, but d lady beautiful with d happy smiles! where they bn paid in prison? where on earth wil they get $50 dollars wit no job for a start, hope they have something out there for them to do..
