Nobody should celebrate Buhari - Etcetera writes

Another article from singer turned writer, Etcetera. Read below...
Why are we dancing? Why do we keep rolling out the drums each time we have a new government, only for us to start crying few months down the line? Is it that we are too quick to forget or we just love to dance? Do you celebrate a child who’s about to write his exams or the one who has written and passed? What is this jubilation for? Because I really don’t understand. Is it that the election of Buhari in itself has suddenly alleviated our sufferings? I am really confused here, hearing how six bikers lost their lives in Zaria celebrating Buhari’s victory. One would think that a people who have been shortchanged for so long by past presidents will know better to be calm and take every word of the new president with a pinch of salt until he proves to be different.
This process is becoming an unending circle, again and again we’ve danced and again and again, we’ve cursed and cried at the end. It is still shocking to me that a lot of Nigerians fell for the story that the president was born without shoes. Was anyone born with shoes on? Buhari’s triumphant entry into the presidency last Sunday which coincidentally was a palm Sunday doesn’t yet prove he is the redeemer. Just like the second coming of our supposed political messiah Obasanjo didn’t prove any significant improvement in our lives.

We all thought he was the one anointed by the gods to take us by the hands and lead us right straight into the promised land, where we shall have no more gnashing of teeth. But when he left office, the roads were still as bad as they were before he took office. The hospitals were still without facilities and most importantly, he failed to defeat the demon in the power sector even with billions of dollars thrown at it. The demons in the same power sector have claimed Jonathan just like they did Yar’Adua, Abdulsalami Abubakar, Sanni Abacha, Shonekan, IBB and Shagari. Even Buhari himself had already been defeated by this demon before. So what says it is not going to be the same this time around. Remember obasanjo was defeated twice by this same demon.

Why won’t our leaders take us for granted when they’ve noticed that we are always ready to jump to our feet and “judile” with the announcement of every new regime? When Buhari overthrew the democratically elected government of Shehu Shagari in 1983, many of you reading this took to the streets to boogie down. When Babangida sent Buhari packing a couple of months later, a lot more of you got drunk and vomited all over the place. Even Abacha’s sudden death brought smiles on the faces of most bar owners across the country as they ran out of booze. Is something wrong with us as a people? We are forgetting a very important fact that this election proves that we are and will still remain a divided people. We are divided by our ideologies with no realistic integration in sight. The election has also reinforced the thinking that we are divided by regional, tribal and religious interests and not national. These are some of the significant issues that will define our tomorrow.

Finally, some of you who are reading this may be saying, oh Etcetera, can’t you be optimistic for once? My brother, I can’t. Optimism and its younger brother, hope have proven to be very dangerous especially in Nigeria. They have sent millions of Nigerians to their early graves. What is the point of being optimistic in a system that has always left me in tears and heartache? Or is it till I get arrested by Mr. Cardiac? Tufiakwa!

If you don't want to celebrate, that's your bussiness.
Not everybody is happy that he won the election.
So we are expecting haters.
They is no harm in trying.
We want to try a new goverment.

Thank you for this article...could someone create a countdown of achievements in office of the president so that we can actively monitor what the new government is doing till the end of the 4year office?....we can all tweet our observations...we don't want the four years to fly by with nothing to show....we must put the new government under pressure...

Well etcetera, we've heard u but, we are generally celebrating Buhari because he is our anointed son chosen to fight corruption. Buhari has a pedigree of being incorruptible and it is exemplary in his life. As for d future, man proposes, God disposes, that's why we have to keep praying for him. Just like our lord Jesus Christ who knew no sin, Buhari is our beloveth in whom we are well pleased. At some point, we need to believe and have faith and follow a lead, just like d isrealites journey from Egypt, though they kept complaining but they still believed and allowed God do d rest.

Well!time will tell,I ve read a lot of interesting piece since the announcement of the presidential election,it will be very sickening and disheartening if after all these jubilation,we sink back again to business as usual,I do not want to believe that after all these dance of 'uhuru'we return back to bisiness as usual,I personal believe that this election has given us hope not because of people involved in d so called change,but because even them the so-called leaders know that the electorates re not smiling,the claim to the failure of president jonathans government is mainly on corruption,security and being accussed that he is in sensitive to the plight of the people,I believe this same Nigerians that voted the president out re still very much alive,let's see their reactions when this ugly trends rears up its ugly head again,I hope they will act then,just as they ve acted now towards this outgoing administration,we keep our fingers crossed!

Bakrshah said...

Mr etcetera, I totally understand your point of view, but here is where you are wrong on this issue. Nigerians are celebrating the victory of voting out an incumbent president, the people feel like their votes count. The only way we can make this nation better is to keep politicians on their toes. So please be optimistic Bcs great nations are built on accountability to the people, and we are seeing the beginning of this.

Couldnt have put it better myself. Lets wait and see. Nigeria is not a joke or easy at all. To be in charge? What magic or miracle? Too many individual, tribal, regional, economic, and social agendas all colliding at crossroads with each other. What we need is to start from ground zero again. What will happen to the confab results? May not have been perfect but was a good start too messy in my view. Does Buhari have a large enough heart to sincerely embrace all the above groups? Do people really change their intrinsic nature and tendencies? What is it I am hearing about mass sackings already of South east individuals in high places in the wake of theolling results from that area? Eg central bank governor etc. god help us.

I pray and urge Buhari to govern without fear nor favor and make us a better developed country even in our reputation world wide. Naija is rich with intelligent people travelling outside the country and is endowed with loads of natural resources to make life better...let there even wealth distribution, jobs, infrastructures, security etc.

This guy talks from his ass. There is no common sense in this write up. Your mates were moving forward by being optimistic about the future of the country while you are still living in the past wallowing in self pity. We can only move forward at this time rather than being depressed about what happened over 2 decades ago. There comes a time that people must learn to let go of the past and wish for the best. Everyone deserve a second chance and with age come wisdom. Buhari is very lucky to have been giving a second chance to undo his past mistakes and I'm sure God willing, he will take the country to a better and greater place than he did in the past which was a priviledge a lot of us wishes for. Variety is a fact life and everyone with his own. Is not about being divided but is about voting for someone that you agree with his policy and what he stands for and it happens all over the world. Even in America they have blue states and red states and independent states that is for grab by any of the candidates. Sometimes a state that is known as red state might vote for a blue state candidate if they agree with that particular candidate policy Stop preaching and be optimistic that tomorrow will be better than yesterday and today. I believe God will guide Buhari and give him the wisdom to make Nigeria a force to be reckon with all over the world.

Those armed robbers and assassins we are all scared of were formerly new born babies whom people celebrated. It is only normal to celebrate any new thing plus new government. I remember I celebrated Jonathan's victory in 2011 and when I saw he wasn't the 'messiah' I tot he was, I had to vote against him. It's only human to give people benefit of the doubt. If u use what one person did to judge another, u will never move forward in life. But the special thing in all these is that, no politician can come sit again without doing nothing. My people, let's get ready cos if Buhari doesn't deliver, we vote him out by 2019 and also his party from presidency. That's the way to go now!

The bikers who lost thier lives are foolish bingos. We the optimistic supporters of change won't take our jubilation that far. However, I would like to make you aware that we are happy not just because buhari won, but mainly for the fact that pdp lost and history was made. Every past election was rigged by the then president to favour his return to power. This time, it was a different ball game. My dear, that alone is change itself and deserves some level of jubilation. I can understand how frustrated you are regarding passed failed promises by our part leaders. I'm also fed up as well. But the question is; do we give up? Do we fold our arms and do nothing? We can only strive for progress and hope for the best. I'm optimistic that change in every aspect of nigeria is near but i'm not foolish to think it would all happen over night. But faith, determination, and most especially speaking out our concerns (which nigerians never use to do before) would make us a greater and well developed nation. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a step!

When Nigeria is no longer listed as a corrupt country under Buhari;
When anything you do in Nigeria is on Merit;
When public primary and Nursery schools are free and better than private;
When public transport have time displayed as to arrival and departure in Buhari's tenure;
When political posts and contract are made on ability to perform and project manage, not to cronies;
When life is safe and no boko haram or niger delta bombings during Buhari's 4 years;
When I can walk into any Hospital in Nigeria and be treated for a cold without being scared of dying;
When each Nigerian can be identified biometrically and therefore eradicate 'ghost mode' Nigerians during elections;
When no policeman can slap me without being sent to cool his heels in jail for assault; and finally, change is when you know you can set your watch and predict it will continue to tick tock! Is all these guaranteed by Sai Buhari?? #wetheywatchandwait

My dear, every leader must be subjected to criticism. Even the president of the most powerful nation (obama) faces backlash from time to time. That's how success is achieved. Criticism only motivates the leader to listen to the voice of the people and act accordingly. Like a horse, you must give it some good whips so it can move forward or faster. Be open minded to change. Say no to stagnation!!

Like you, I don't reside in Nigeria, but I'm a full blooded Nigerian who wants the best for our nation. The country may be fucked up, but who are u expecting to fix it? Doesn't matter where u are located, it pays to be patriotic and love your own. No matter our location, our voice must be heard! I travelled down to Nigerian simply because I wanted to be part of the voters of change. It's high time we quit with the negativity and set our mind of what we can do even as individuals to better our nation. If the country is in flames, would u be able to pay visit to the loved one u left behind? Change starts from you!!

Dear Etc, you made some valid points that I will not take from you but you missed a key point here. The celebration was/is born from the fact that we as a nation successfully voted out a corrupt administration. The fact that our vote counted is a celebration of our democracy advancing! Whether GMB will perform or not, only God can tell as we are not soothsayers. But as a Christian I know that the first stage of a battle is first won from the mind. So Mr Etc rather than speaking negative against an administration that hasn't even started, we chose to confess positive and speak positivity upon our president elect and Nigeria. Please don't kill this vibe, life is too short to dwell in negatives!

God gives brains and unfortunately he didn't give you any. The truth is always bitter and must be written or said ! Take it or leave it ! He just gained a reader ... ME !

I understand him but he's too pessimistic. It doesn't hurt to have high hopes and give up on them only when they're dashed.

Sis chinyere we will not regret. If Buhari doesn't deliver in due course, we will vote him out. Doesn't matter how many times we vote a leader in or not. We will not stop until we achieve what we desire. persistence is the key to freedom. If the thing reach ur turn sister chinyere, we go still vote u in. If u no deliver, we go still send u packing.

Optimism and positivity is a critical factor to success. we are celebrating the victory because we are optimistic that "change has come to stay".It is actually the dawn of a new era. My Dear,it part of our culture to celebrate. However, if after a specified period,we cannot see certain changes that are meant to be glaring,then our victory dance changes to questions-protest-demonstrations.The task ahead is huge ,but we pray that by Gods grace 'This Change will be fruitful'. One more thing,everybody should be involved in this metamorphosis.For now,the victory dance continues.HAPPY NEW ERA!HAPPY EASTER
