Iyabo Obasanjo writes on the recent article by ex-CBN gov Charles Soludo

What she wrote below ...
Professor Soludo’s article on the elections in Nigeria is the best writing I have read recently on the real situation politically and economically in Nigeria. The well-articulated response from Dr. Fayemi compared to the abuse infused response from Femi Fani-Kayode on the PDP side is a great example of the contrast of the status-quo compared to the alternative.
Whatever the case and I don’t expect miracles form APC but right now they have more thinking people than the PDP.
As a Yoruba person, Dr. Fayemi’s response is how we expect our educated elite to take up issues and not the mad ranting’s of Fani-Kayode. I agree with most of his premise but I do not think they (APC) can take up a massive public works program in a period of “famine” i.e. low oil prices. During the great depression when Roosevelt used public works to help provide jobs, it was the stock market that failed i.e. Government revenue was affected from tax income but income from exportation which was then mainly agricultural goods was not affected.

The government could use money from its coffers to create jobs and provide skills and training, which people could then use in the private sector. The best part of Dr. Fayemi’s response is that it is not elite focused. Nigerian governance as I saw it was not a democracy but an elitocracy. Govt of the elite by the elite for the elite and even if you grew up in near death poverty once you left those circumstances you forgot where you came from and concentrated on your immediate family and matters affecting the well-being of the elite.

Changing this perspective to make the elite understand that their wellbeing was in fact dependent on the wellbeing of the masses will be APC’s challenge. They are sourcing from the same pool of elite talent that every Nigerian government has to source from and it is this pool that essentially has to be different or we will find ourselves again at precipice as usual. Iyabo Obasanjo DVM, Ph.D, a former Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria wrote from the United States of America.

You know Nigerians love suffering and smiling.
Last year Nigerians experienced great level of poverty, but the coordinating minister of the economy kept brandishing figures of how we've been doing well as an economy. No doubt even the president said it we've witnessed increase in the purchase of private jets by Nigerians, but the common Nigerian was actually suffering.
Only the elites experienced the success in the economy,Soludo brought out facts and verifiable figures to buttress his assertion, but Fani Kayode must earn his pay.

So, i don't want to hear whatever she has to say. as far as im concerned, she's same as all the others.

All this writing drama that has been going on in this country lately have been quite pathetic and excruciating. If first started with former CBN governor to Minister of finance and now Iyabo obasanjo. All of you think your are smart by exposing Nigerian economic state and governance this much to neighboring communities. Well is good if the drama will unleash pure and genuine political phase of Nigeria. This has actually got me thinking "who are they deceiving?". The failed economic state of Nigeria cannot be left unsaid even though it might not sound pretty nice to the eyes of all affected administrative body of this present government. But still while the premise of the alleged mismanagement of Nigerian economy is been defended, it does not give room for lies and abuses. I think it is better taken as a precautionary guidance to stop further economic mishandling and abuse of power that is rampant in Nigerian politics. Is highly appalling our socalled political, academic and economic elites can not be constructive in their compelling challenges rather than making abuses to themselves. Nigerian state of affairs is not tantamount to ennui and total deception. Our representatives in public offices and seat of government should should stop being selfish and represent Nigeria well with utmost patriotism, diligence, purity and truthfulness of heart. It is sad that Nigeria is still heading towards faultful time with mediocre representatives who only seek their pocket with little or no intentions of saving Nigeria in this present economic and political catastrophy. Well I think I love the writing drama because it draws attention to impunities going on in the seat of government. I must confess I will write mine to join the drama because is all fun. Jerry Banks

I completely disagree with Senator Iyabo. I admire her for that letter she wrote to her father however, i disagree with her on Soludo. Soludo’s piece was one of the most self serving and dishonest pieces written by an intellectual. If Soludo had major concerns about the economy, why didn’t he speak up since? He waited for four years until it election time to voice his unsolicited opinion. This is opportunism at its highest. This is the same thing he did in 2010 when he sided with Atiku against GEJ. He thought Atiku will win the primaries and all of a sudden he lashed out against government. When Atiku lost and he subsequently lost all his attempts to be Governor of his state, he went silent. That shows me someone who is extremely selfish and after his own advancement. So all this high fallutin talk from him is nonsense and I suspect the response he got from Madam Iweala must be because she sensed his insincerity. After all he knows how to reach her. If he had concerns why didn’t he raise them before now? The irony of the whole thing is that the major debt Government is dealing with is the N5.7 trillion hole he left behind during his dubious tenure as CBN governor.

Rotimi Lawanson said...

Iyabo also erred. Soludo is clearly working for APC so how do you expect Dr. Fayemi to lash out at him? This whole thing was clearly orchestrated and we all know that here. His phony attempts to sound balanced was clearly seen through. Soludo is angling for a position in a government should Buhari win. It is an open secret that after Iyabo’s father spoke out and his statements were debunked, he enlisted Soludo to do a hatchet job. Soludo ought to be ashamed of himself because he is a consummate opportunist. How many Yorubas do you see attacking Adeshina or Aganga or other Yoruba ministers? How many Hausa Fulanis do you see attacking their own Ministers? None. Only Soludo with is silly outsized ego and oversized perception of himself will do such a thing. Some of our brothers and sisters across the Niger just lack decorum. See the gutter response from Oby who is also angling for a position. People tore her to pieces on twitter and Lind Ikeji, She should know we are sick of her jumping into everything and i think it is because she and Soludo are jobless.

Personally I think Nigeria is doing well on paper but in reality it's otherwise. The Gap between the rich and poor is getting bigger. More and more youths are graduating from university with less hope of employment. Health care; is it getting better when Nigerians are running to India, ghana, Hungary, Egypt, Saudi , USA, UK, south Africa . Housing deficit is growing. Housing in abuja is a big Dream... On paper, the basic salaries of majority of Nigeria's population can not buy most of them a nice home and good healthcare and education for their families, and other necessities. I think Nigerians should ponder on these issues. Would we say that the number of Nigerians going abroad for greener pastures, healthcare or education has reduced? Why has it been increasing over the years? Is the life expectancy of Nigerians increasing over the years or decreasing? These are some questions that shows the real status report of the circumstances Nigerians are in. They tend to contradict paper economics.
