The 12 soldiers who attacked their GOC in Maiduguri have been sentenced to death

13 out of the 18 soldiers standing trial for participating in the mutiny (revolt action) against their General Officer Commanding, Maj. Gen. Ahmed Mohammed at the newly created 7 Division of the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri on May 12th have been sentenced to death by a military court that sat in Abuja yesterday night September 15th.

Five others were discharged and acquitted while one was jailed for 28 days with hard labor. Choi, they should temper justice with mercy biko o. Continue

The soldiers had on May 14th revolted against poor remuneration and lack of sophisticated weapons to fight Boko Haram. On that particular day, the soldiers lost their cool after seeing the corpse of some of their colleagues killed by Boko Haram men. They immediately opened fire on their GOC, who luckily escaped unhurt.

The President of the Court Martial (military court), Maj. Gen. C.C. Okonkwo, while delivering his judgement said the 12 soldiers were found guilty of criminal conspiracy, mutiny, attempt to commit murder (shooting at the vehicle of the GOC); insubordination to a particular order; insubordination and false accusation.
Those sentenced are Jasper Braidolor, David Musa, Friday Onuh, Yusuf Shuaibu, Igonmu Emmanuel, Andrew Ugbede, Nurudeen Ahmed, Ifeanyi Alukagba, Alao Samuel, Amadi Chukwuma, Alan Linus, and Stephen Clement.

The legal team of the convicts pleaded with the court martial to be lenient and temper justice with mercy stating that some of the men convicted were the sole providers of their families. One of the convict is said to be the only child of his 80 year old mother while another is said to be the father of a 5-month old baby. The legal team argued that giving them maximum sentence would do more harm than good, adding that it would increase the agony of their dependants.

Other members of the court are: Col. TS Nurseman, Col. TO Olowomeye, Col. IG Lassa, Lt.Col. JK Feboke, Lt. Col. CR Nnebeife, Major I Yusuf, Major TA Yakubu and Major AE Martins.
Lt. Col. AA Audu and Lt. Col. U Ukpe served as prosecutors.

Do u knw the GOC was retired prematurely? If a clear message isn't sent, then d next thing is Mr President will be fired at? People have to know that the military profession is not a job but a sacrifice... Standards must and will be maintained to achieve success in battle... P.S,i am not saying their welfare musnt be taken care of... But we have ways of doing things other than firing at friendly forces...

The magnitude of this soldiers sin is too much and since there is a very strict punishment for it under the military Act(which they also knew about) they should have go another way in dealing with it back then. AnD i think their General Officer too should have been investigated and Judged along with them! He deserve death !! This is why Nigerians should learn to stop embarrassing and Making fun of the Nigerian Army on social media! This lots put their life on the line for their country and they knew it from the start, so if you have seen and talked to a soldier before or you have one as a friend or your father is a Retired Soldier like mine you will understand what i'm saying .........@neyopumping says.... This makes me sad!!!!

Discipline is the mainstay of the military profession, if they are not purnished others will follow suit. May God receive their soul.

Discipline in the army is the bedrock upon which you and I walk "free". I'm surprised at 95 percent of the comments posted here. Shooting at a GOC? No be military coup be dat? Linda, perhaps not everybody should be allowed to post comments here, I beg.

Lt Abu, stop threatening Nigerian civilians. They are trying their best, though things are not perfect. Besides, when you were there in power (during the darkest days of this country), what did you do? Also, where are you a lieutenant? It can't even be in the Nigerian Army. Such a wildly undisciplined comment from you would not have been possible. If I'm wrong, pls correct me and boldly state your formation. I doubt you can.

See Nigeria now. Boko Haram and corrupt govt officials are walking free while our brave soldiers are being sentenced to death by firing squad like armed robbers.

Nigeria is battling insurgency, and yet they wanna kill soldiers unharmed. They should push them to fight the boko haram na instead of killing uselessly

That is the way the military constitution is. Those soldiers are aware of it. But how that military is reading newspaper in that picture when something as serious as this is going on. Thats funny. benotekcomputers@gmail.com

The military is an organization that is built and thrives on discipline of the strictest and highest standards. MUTINY is not taken lightly in any military formation the world over. LOOK IT UP. If discipline is lost, then the military structure is lost. It is not a democracy.

These soldiers knew the implications of their actions and should accept their punishment with the dignity of a real soldier.

Granted their voices have been heard and will help their fellow soldiers currently facing unfair conditions in the field. Hence, their punishment is a sacrifice they should be willing to make.

That being said, under the current circumstances it would be highly unwise on the part of the government to give the maximum penalty considering the special circumstances surrounding the incident. Thought should be given also to the morale of their comrades in the field and prospective recruits. The judgement should be reviewed STRESSING the contributing factors.
