Do you have any suggestions on what the government should do about the Ebola epidermic?

Yesterday President Jonathan declared an Emergency on Ebola. This thing is apparently more serious than some of us think. Reno Omokri tweeted today asking people for their suggestions on what the government should do in addition to what they are already doing. Do you have any suggestions?

The best option for now is finding a way to contain it. More enlightenment should be done on the spread of the virus. And people should always report to any nearest hospital/Clinic once they begin to experience any symptom while we keep praying and hoping that the vaccine for its cure will be out as soon as possible. God guide us all. I'm out. ***CATCH ME IF U CAN***

Then they should @least for once acknowledge God..as their understanding is vanity starting from you sir! Lastly hope and pray that the drug being worked on in America finally works! Prov 3:5. So Linda,I am not to conversant with the tweeter thingy so i'll drop my suggestion here. Please help me drop it on tweeter(i'll send you a mail)
I think the only way to halt this thing now is to give a window of 3days or so for people to go out and get there necessary supplies dat can last a week or more, then all borders to every state be shut down for lets say 2weeks during which there'll ben o movement(just like during the last census that took place some years back)then all employed or volunteering personnel will go from house to house to check and also test individuals, any confirmed case should be taken out and suspected case should also be kept apart. I know it sounds crazy but Ebola IS crazy and if we don't act fast, we'll all be wiped out.
And also as a nation lets ask God for mercy and also repent of all our evil ways

First of all, the government should ban all flights comming from those countries let me remind you that the HARM CAME FROM AIR, THE SOURCE ITSELF LIBERIA.
Then THEY SHOULD PREVENT CONTACT FROM OUTSIDERS TO THE EBOLA PATIENTS THAT IS FAMILY, FRIENDS, RELATIONS, THROUGH THEM IT SPREADS RAPIDLY.
THEN THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD MAKE SURE THAT ALL THE HEALTH WORKERS WORK IN GOOD CONDITIONS, THAT THEY ARE WELL PROTECTED, HAVE GOOD MASKS TO PROTECT THEM.
PANIC IS NOT PART OF THE SOLUTION ABEG, THE REST DONT BE SWALLOWED IN YOUR FEARS THIS VIRUS CAN ONLY BE CONTACTED WHEN YOU FIT INTO THE CATEGORIES I HAVE MENTIONNED: FAMILY, RELATION, HEALTH WORKERS/DOCTORS ATTENDING TO THOSE PATIENTS OK?
THEN FINALLY INFORM YOURSELVES ABOUT THE VIRUS AND EXTREMELY CLEAN;
WELL FINALLY, I STILL BELIEVE IN PRAYER SO I BELIEVE VERY SOON IT WILL STOP, IT HAS TO STOP BECAUSE IF IT IS STIIL HERE WHEN SCHOOL STARTS HMMMM ..... WELL I PRAY IT DOESN'T get there.
PRAY, PRAY, Pray, the fear of GOD IS THE BEGINNING OF WISDOM!!!!! Be rest assured IT WILL GO!!!!!
PEACE, LOVE BE ONTO AFRICA!

Distribute disinfectant gel for hand already. Finance research institute to speed up research for cure and vaccine. Stop flights from Liberia and Sierra Leone. Stop building shackles calling them isolation centres. Those wooden shackles are a disgrace to humanity. Nigeria can do better.

As a public health specialist, my first opinion is that the health minister should be replaced with a public health specialist. Prof Asuzu of University of Ibadan comes to mind. Or even Dr Fatiregun now of WHO. Primarily what we need is a professional.

A new minister should then focus primarily on containment and surveillance, using standard health measures of surveillance.

Next the media, orientation agency and ministry of information has to keep Nigerians up to date with accurate and correct information. it is only when people don't get accurate information that false information like salt water spread. Passing these messages include using community meetings, town announcers etc to reach rural and hard-to-reach areas.

Linda i sent you and several others that medical nutrition could help but i didn't get any reply from you, please we need to do something fast God does not lien nature has solution to every problem.

Transportation should be looked into. Cos since the virus is transferred through sweat too, this sardine packing of passengers by puiblic transport will help to spread it more. The government should enlighten those in transport n the rural areas well.

People should not be allowed to choose whether or not they want to be quarantined. If they are at risk, then quarantine should be mandatory. Also they could turn NNPC hospital and First Consultants into Designated Ebola hospitals after disinfecting the hospitals, instead of just leaving them closed.

Declaring a state of emergency ll b better atleast it ll stop it from spreading from one state to the other.

Anonymous said...

Of course, if they weren't stupid enough to let that Liberian guy into the country we wouldn't be in the state of near hopeless ness.

The government should go on a national testing for ebola census and forcefully quarantine those sick. Thats the only way to control this right now. Take a week holiday doing this and the fear would end. Pls linda pass this message to the clueless government

Anonymous said...

I know if I sit in my house, I am 99.9% safe from the virus so;

1) we should declare a 2 week public holiday where movements should come to a stand still. Everybody should sit at home. And health workers stay at work 24/7.

2) if anybody is sick, stay at home and call an ambulance. Ambulance comes home to treat you. If its Ebola, they carry you away.

I'm certain we can isolate every Ebola case this way without them infecting much people before being identified.

Is sounds expensive plus businesses losing money and all, but if we let Ebola get out of hand, the entire economy will come to a stand still naturally.

I believe a serious and critical situation need a serious and drastic solution;

1) I believe the government should lock up our borders for one month after advising pple to get all their supplies before the lockdown

2) The government should set up isolation and treatment centers in every local government area

3) people with high fevers during this time of the lockdown should be promptly reported and picked up by well trained health care professionals for intensive monitoring and treatment

4) the family members of those who have reported an individual with high fever should be quarantined

5) pple should avoid; crowded places like clubs, no unusual hand shakes, maintain good aseptic practices like washing of hands, no eating at the street vendors and bookers, avoid sexual contacts, no sharing of tools and utensils.

6) pple should pray; the bible says if my pple who are called by my name, will humble themselves and turn from their evil ways and pray, he will heal our land. 2 chronicles 7 vs 14

They should close d borders! Build more isolation tents, and increase d money paid to d health workers volunteering. Lest I forget, pls doctors should not call of deir strike yet oh, cuz I work in a government hospital and if dey call of d strike, I bet u this ebola wld spread like wild fire

Anonymous said...

My suggestion is that every patient in any hospital Ebola is diagnosed be quarantined alongside the medical team and staff. Tracing everyone who has also visited these people in the hospital for a possible action of quarantining them also, at least, for the 3 weeks' incubation period. The family members of the medical team not excluded.

I think this is a good suggestion

Borders should be closed. Health education on its prevention intensified . Effective isolation and treatment of d persons already infected. Appropriate surveillance techniques of at risk individuals. Govt shd provide care givers with the right gadgets to work. Life insurance policies for them too

The Government should stop d surveillance method dey r using to stop the spread of this virus.and they should quarantine the 139 people under surveillance.this will stop the spread. initially, it was 70 people under surveillance, now it has been increased to 139 people. Lagos is such a populated place

Nigerians, can in the meantime protect themselves by being proactive..report any person with a fever even if it ends up not being Ebola..as this would facilitate easier monitoring and effective quarantine when needed.

Government should establish response units- mobile hospitals in each of the 774 local governments with free services to enable people report fevers and ensure continuous monitoring for each area. This would also guarantee that the data collection would be apt.

These response centres should also be tasked with distributing control materials- like hand sanitisers, gloves and information leaflets to their local populace for free.

They should also act as first contact centres for suspected Ebola cases and should have members of the police attached to each unit in order to maintain order and help to enforce inspections when people sometimes try to hide their sick relatives.

Our borders should monitored effectively with random Ebola testing instituted for most passengers from high risk countries and Nigerians should be tested before travelling out as well.

There should be more awareness campaign about this issue and this must be sponsored by the government

Each state government and Abuja should provide a weekly update on its "Ebola" status, including providing verifiable information on new infection, treatments etc

The federal government should raise the threat level from Ebola to the highest level.

Citizens should also reduce risky behaviour by educating themselves and those around them about the Ebola virus and also report anything suspicious as appropriate

The zMapp serum remains an IMP- investigational medicinal product- with no clear data on its actual efficacy and or side effect profile, however until it is approved for "compassionate use" and brought to Africa..it's best that excellent preventative measures are applied.

Anonymous said...

If there were local first response contact centres established nationwide because of this virulent virus.. Anyone with a fever would ideally be calling their local centre to report it via phone, hence their privacy would be maintained. The centre should then be able to send an ambulance to test the person in their own home.. If a diagnosis for Ebola is then made.. They can then be removed and quarantined. This is an epidemic and it requires rapid and accelerated response..Nigeria has the resources to put such measures in place now.

There has been world Alert on Ebola Virus since feb 2014, yet our Govt didn't put measures in place to control people coming in from affected countries.

Today, a Nurse has been confirmed dead by Ebola and others tested positive.

Why do we always like looking for umbrella after we ve been beaten by rain!

We always wait to lose match before we ban NFF!

We always wait for a plane crash before we suspend outdated aircraft!

What a country! By next month, schools will reopen, the affected people @ d moment have families and kids.

I'm sure d Govt is waiting to hear outbreak of Ebola virus in a particular school before telling us their plans to protect our children from contacting Ebola virus.

Govt should start now to announce that all schools private or Government owned, both primary/Secondary should remain on holidays until a confirmed cure or measures to counter this deadly virus is discovered and available.

A dead child cannot be educated. We don't know who's gonna be next.

Please, for God's sake, continue 2 fwd this message until it gets to appropriate authorities.

What a B-I-G S-H-A-M-E that our leaders are only interested in politics! 😉

I strongly agree with anonymous 1.46pm.......BAN all flights from those countries and keep infected people in Fashola's tent......period!

Anonymous said...

People have made valid contributions.

I think top on government's list should be education and creating more awareness.

A lot of Nigerians listen to radio and watch television. Let specific radio and tv programs focus on educating people and creating more awareness. This will cut across different levels of our society, including rural areas. There should be less of round table talks. Rather, there should be more reconstructions of Ebola incidents and how the government intends to manage it.

Tools to educate people should include telephone numbers for government health centres when an emergency takes place. As well as the first few steps to take in an emergency.

Billboards that provide health information, such as symptoms to look out for and health centre contact numbers if someone or someone they know shows symptoms.

Easily accessible health/quarantine centres for all local governments across the country, including areas not at risk of Ebola.

Going forward, the Nigerian health system should jump on this: provide an e-forum/portal for all Nigerian scientists/care professionals and givers across the globe; where Universities, organisations and individuals can subscribe to and/or submit recent and continuous studies - with adequate protection and copyright laws of course.

Let the government take research seriously more than they have ever done.

Let this outbreak stir something positive in you and me.

Let it cause us to want a better environment for us all.

Of course, there will be elements in our societies who would not want progress. Let people who show love to our environment be more than those elements.

Keep calm and fight Ebola.

Peace, love, good health and happiness.

Best Wishes,
Your Neighbour.

We have many intelligent scientists in the country. Assuming Nigeria is a place where we have constant power supply, this would have been an opportunity for our many medical intellects to surf the internet and seek for reasonable solutions.
Well, the country is already in decay. The best thing the government can do now is to set up enlightenment programmes that will really get to people in both the rural and urban areas.
I also think they should increase the supplies of protective shield so that people infected can be easily evacuated and quarantined.

I think the government should shut down the countries activities and stop movement for about 3 weeks to curb the spread of the deadly virus Ebola.ln that time anyone down with Ebola would be known since 3 weeks is the maximum time before the virus shows . Since the incubation of the Ebola disease is 21 days, the govt should declare a 2weeks seat at home so that those whom have come in contact with the primary carrier (Patrick Sawyer) and secondary contacts, will be able to know if they develop symptoms and can call the emergencies number to be taken to the secluded location to prevent further spread. With this it can be managed and contained.

Sensitization programs should be proactive particularly in rural areas.Governors should be directed to have this program effected. Reno Omokri, the government needs to have a shut down. No work, no school no movement for 2 weeks to break the chain of transmission or at least minimize it to pockets that health officials can now target. You also need massive campaigns to tell the public that they cannot try to help people who are sick. they need to immediately isolate people showing signs of illness.

Anonymous said...

First Awareness. Seems to me like only the people in Lagos are being adequately educated. Then, ban all flights frm Liberia,Saudi Arabia,Seirra Leone and Guinea. Then all schools should be on lockdown,University to Kindergaten. I dnt understand y Nysc is still keeping people in d orientation camp too,we should avoid too many people at a place. Another thing, since all our known cases are in lagos, all movt in and out of lagos should b stopped for 3weeks(ebola incubation period). That crap the govt has been passing abt no medical reasons to ban flight, close borders, schools etc is crap....Do all of these pronto! This is a desperate situation and we need to use desperate measures. Now we can talk about giving 1 week for pple to get thr supplies and wat they wud need for 3weeks. So in the 1 week thr shud b qn emergency training of medical personnel and volunteers who would go from house to house testing people. Also the govts of other States should be forced to start putting structures on ground for cases there, the way I see it,only Fashola seems to be slightly prepared. We need all our public health specialists to head all ebola isolation centres.

Am angry, but let me suggest. Since they said it can be spread from saliva, body fliuds etc..1) first let us put a law to reduce the number of passengers that a bus carries. So instead of 4 on a seat with bodies touching, it must be reduce to 3 on a seat. 2) Secondly, conductors should not be allowed to 'shadow' passengers by shouting like fools(pardon me) and spraying saliva over the whole place. This wil reduce 50% of the spread. 3) more isolation centers should be built..4) free sanitizers should be distributed. 5) churches should minimize shouts during prayer sessions. 6) Prostitution should be curbed. 7) And finally enlightenment... We need to enlighten people..can u all remember how HIV spread even to the rural areas? And fast!! if I remember more,I will add

Several years ago, Ebola virus erupted in Africa, killing thousands without restraint or cure. The medical world was perplexed. A great man of God by the name John G Lake came to the rescue. Laying hands on infected people who were not to be touched. The slightest contact with any secretion from an infected person is all it takes for transmission. But with bare hands, cleaning secretion and curing every victim, John G Lake along with his Holy Ghost filled team, brought to an abrupt end the spread of the deadly virus. When asked by the medical world how he did it. He had this to say: I have the life of God in me, every virus that comes in contact with me dies. He asked them to get an innoculum from an infected person, observe same under a microscope to ascertain viral activities in it. They did and confirmed living and multiplying virus. He then asked them to put the innoculum on his palm and observe under the microscope. This time there were no more activities. ALL WERE DEAD upon contact with him. What a life! Every child of God has this life! He that has the Son has this life! That higher life that put out Ebola in the days of John G Lake will do the same through you in your day! At the Name of Jesus, Ebola will bow out! Stop the fear! Let this message of hope and faith go viral and the Ebola viral spread will stop! Don't disdain the ever living words of Jesus: And these signs shall follow them that believe, in my Name, they shall cast out devils, they shall speak with new tongues, they shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing (Ebola virus included) it shall not hurt them, they shall lay hand on the sick (those already infected) and they shall recover - Mark 16:15-18.John G Lake and team are long gone! But I am here, you are here! We can save our world! We have the life of God in us!Spread the faith!Stop the fear!Spread the life!Stop the death!Yes we can!!!

I believe the government should consider contacting the Japanese influenza drug manufacturer, Takeda which is being considered as one of the vaccines to be used for ebola. The drug is already licensed as an influenza vaccine and would be accessible unlike the other drugs in the trial stages. Getting a vaccine and or cure is more likely to help curb the virus on time as more people in hiding are likely to come out faster knowing they are likely to survive. Also, the govt should be willing to back up the manufacturer with the necessary funds required.

I don't think volunteers suld b encouraged,or doctors suld call off deir strike.dis disease is smtin dat suld b treated by experts not just ny1 volunteering,d fewer d beta,n it would help cub d amount of apple exposed to it.on doctors calling off deir strike, let's luk @ it dis way if doctors weren't on strike Patrick sawyer mite hv 1st bn taken to a teaching hosp like Luth accident and emergency were he would hv cm in contact wid students, oda patients, doctors, more cleaners,n a student most definitely wuld hv clerkd him,nw just imagine d spread.

Good effort by the government in trying to contain the spread, However they should also isolate the health workers treating the Ebola victims at the moment, so they don't go back home to infect their family members as the previuos nurse did to her kids.
They should be isolated for the incubation period(21days) to be sure they are not infected before going home, to prevent the spread.

can Nigerian government look into this device, it is currently used in all Asia countries, this device is able to test temperature of individuals in a stream of people and sift through the pedestrian flow to separate the people having fever symptom from normal people, with alarm and video recording function available, preventing epidemic disease from spreading and can be used at airports, bus stations, shopping centers, etc

Invest in your teaching hospitals and find a bloody cure instead of waiting for the Americans to come to our aid in 2015.

Pls tell the lagos government to stop the toll workers at lekki from putting on gloves.
It protects them alone... what do u think will happen if they actually come in contact with an ebola victim... The glove gets contaminated and the same glove would be used to serve other motorists thus disseminating the disease. Not all common sense is good sense Please!
