First Bank Partners PayPal to Expand E-Commerce Access in Nigeria

Once upon a time it was virtually impossible to buy goods online or pay for any service on the web if you were in Nigeria.

As Nigerians woke up to the development of e-commerce, various payment options began to emerge to make things easier but we still didn’t have one payment method for Nigerians accepted everywhere

Now we finally have an online payment solution accepted all over the world, courtesy of a new strategic partnership between First Bank of Nigeria and PayPal.

This partnership which is a milestone in PayPal’s Africa growth story, has the sole purpose of putting stakeholders at the heart of their business as FirstBank customers can now pay and get paid globally; in a manner that is seamless, secure and convenient

This is BIG! PayPal has over 148 million accounts in 26 currencies spread over 203 markets around the world; while FirstBank is a leading Nigerian commercial bank with over 750 branches across Nigeria with cards accepted in over 200 countries and on millions of POS terminals and ATMs around the world.

The arrival of PayPal in Nigeria allows PayPal connect Nigerians to merchants from Asia, North America, Europe and beyond. So finally we can do online transactions on almost every site (since PayPal is a popular global online payment platform anyway), however PayPal accounts have a transaction limit of about $250 until the account is verified. This is where FirstBank comes in!

The FirstBank Advantage
Creating a PayPal account through FirstBank means the account will be immediately verified, giving customers more freedom to transact. This partnership is exclusive to FirstBank and therefore has an edge over other institutions in Nigeria which have access to the PayPal platform

Getting a PayPal account via FirstBank is simple. Simply open a FIrstBank account and register for the online banking platform, FirstOnline. Once you log into FirstOnline, you can create a PayPal account from there and select what cards you wish to link to your PayPal account.

In the end, this means FirstBank customers can shop and pay on millions of websites around the world from their PCs and smartphones in a fast and easy way without having to reveal their card detailswith the added reassurance of PayPal Buyer Protection.

Please, before we all scream "Thank you to PayPal and FirstBank. We should all be aware that there's nothing special with all this paparazzi. Paypal stands to gain more in this partnership because they know Nigerians shop a lot online. VISA and MASTERCARD are making it seriously in Nigeria hence Paypal's coming to Nigeria to get a share of Nigeria's e-commerce. If they are really serious about their new service in Nigeria, then they should also enable Nigerians to accept Paypal funds too so as to create a balance. Till then there's nothing exciting for me to celebrate. Meanwhile, you can verify your PayPal with ANY NIGERIAN BANK with your VISA or MASTERCARD.

The truth is that all Banks in Nigeria are verified with PayPal. The difference with the First Bank own is that you can do the registration from their Internet banking platform. The real deal is being able to receive funds into your PayPal account which is not available to any Nigerian bank; Including First Bank!

Thanks Linda for this great info. For all those who comment blindly. Nice one for FirstBank o. My brother linked his PayPal to another bank and could only spend $250. When he tried to make other buys with his PayPal they told him he had exceeded his spending limit. I have spent more than $250 already, apparently, my account linked to FirstBank gives me unlimited funds to spend.

Those who have issues with account, you should just go to their facebook page and voila. My issues got resolved in minutes. or follow them on twitter and they will follow back so you can DM them, Firstbank really trying, think we should not cut down a good thing. Well done Firstbank - From a New Customer!

I have followed FirstBank's claim closely with this PayPal thing and their claim is true. While you can link cards from most banks to a PayPal account, the verification issue is seamless with FirstBank unlike other banks where verification can be a long story.

Having your PayPal Account from FirstBank has a lot advantages over other banks because
1. From FirstOnline platform your PayPal account is automatically verified but for other banks, you have to open a PayPal account on the PayPal platform.
2. First bank offers you unlimited funds but other banks have a limit of $250
3. It is highly secured (for us eBay addicts)

A good strategic move by FirstBank! Thanks a million!

If you are looking for a seamless way to open a PayPal account without hassles, FirstBank is the way to go o. I opened a PayPal account straight from FirstOnline in 5 minutes. Well done FirstBank

Please why in the world is this story written to make it appear that Paypal is now available in Nigeria as a result of the partnership with FirstBank?

Dieko said...

The fact that I don't have to go through a rigorous verification process and I can spend as much funds as I want to, is enough reason for me to get my PayPal account from FirstBank's platform.

Can Nigerians now receive funds/payments with the PayPal account created via First Bank Online Banking platform?

That is what I'm highly interested in because the issue of paying/buying online with PayPal either with Nigeria PayPal or other top countries PayPal account is not a big deal.

Anonymous said...

For now, this is just hope, reality will come when I can sell my electronic product and get paid into my paypal account, only buying from others makes just a consumer...
