The President I want' - By Chimamanda Adichie

Award winning author Chimamanda Adichie writes on the kind of President she wants. Read below..
Some of my relatives lived for decades in the North, in Kano and Bornu. They spoke fluent Hausa. (One relative taught me, at the age of eight, to count in Hausa.) They made planned visits to Anambra only a few times a year, at Christmas and to attend weddings and funerals. But sometimes, in the wake of violence, they made unplanned visits. I remember the word ‘Maitatsine’ – to my young ears, it had a striking lyricism – and I remember the influx of relatives who had packed a few bags and fled the killings. What struck me about those hasty returns to the East was that my relatives always went back to the North. Until two years ago when my uncle packed up his life of thirty years in Maiduguri and moved to Awka. He was not going back. This time, he felt, was different.
My uncle’s return illustrates a feeling shared by many Nigerians about Boko Haram: a lack of hope, a lack of confidence in our leadership. We are experiencing what is, apart from the Biafran war, the most violent period in our nation’s existence. Like many Nigerians, I am distressed about the students murdered in their school, about the people whose bodies were spattered in Nyanya, about the girls abducted in Chibok. I am furious that politicians are politicizing what should be a collective Nigerian mourning, a shared Nigerian sadness.

And I find our president’s actions and non-actions unbelievably surreal.
I do not want a president who, weeks after girls are abducted from a school and days after brave Nigerians have taken to the streets to protest the abductions, merely announces a fact-finding committee to find the girls.

I want President Jonathan to be consumed, utterly consumed, by the state of insecurity in Nigeria. I want him to make security a priority, and make it seem like a priority. I want a president consumed by the urgency of now, who rejects the false idea of keeping up appearances while the country is mired in terror and uncertainty. I want President Jonathan to know – and let Nigerians know that he knows – that we are not made safer by soldiers checking the boots of cars, that to shut down Abuja in order to hold a World Economic Forum is proof of just how deeply insecure the country is. We have a big problem, and I want the president to act as if we do. I want the president to slice through the muddle of bureaucracy, the morass of ‘how things are done,’ because Boko Haram is unusual and the response to it cannot be business as usual.

I want President Jonathan to communicate with the Nigerian people, to realize that leadership has a strong psychological component: in the face of silence or incoherence, people lose faith. I want him to humanize the lost and the missing, to insist that their individual stories be told, to show that every Nigerian life is precious in the eyes of the Nigerian state.

I want the president to seek new ideas, to act, make decisions, publish the security budget spending, offer incentives, sack people. I want the president to be angrily heartbroken about the murder of so many, to lie sleepless in bed thinking of yet what else can be done, to support and equip the armed forces and the police, but also to insist on humaneness in the midst of terror. I want the president to be equally enraged by soldiers who commit murder, by policemen who beat bomb survivors and mourners. I want the president to stop issuing limp, belated announcements through public officials, to insist on a televised apology from whoever is responsible for lying to Nigerians about the girls having been rescued.

I want President Jonathan to ignore his opponents, to remember that it is the nature of politics, to refuse to respond with defensiveness or guardedness, and to remember that Nigerians are understandably cynical about their government.

I want President Jonathan to seek glory and a place in history, instead of longevity in office. I want him to put aside the forthcoming 2015 elections, and focus today on being the kind of leader Nigeria has never had.

I do not care where the president of Nigeria comes from. Even those Nigerians who focus on ‘where the president is from’ will be won over if they are confronted with good leadership that makes all Nigerians feel included. I have always wanted, as my president, a man or a woman who is intelligent and honest and bold, who is surrounded by truth-telling, competent advisers, whose policies are people-centered, and who wants to lead, who wants to be president, but does not need to – or have to- be president at all costs.

President Jonathan may not fit that bill, but he can approximate it: by being the leader Nigerians desperately need now.

My question is this. How come she is now lending her voice just because it has international interest. Did she just hear the news? Is this some show to create relevance? This happened weeks ago, no article. International interest, and boom, article materializes. Hmm.....

When GEJ was elected president,we all rejoiced and welcomed the development which to us symbolized a depature from the usual practice of old men holding us to ransom.
He promised us Fresh Air and that was what we all were anticipating at that moment.
He got himself so endeared to our hearts coz he was of a very humble background.
When he jettisoned the company of hid godfather Obj we,our joy knew no bound.
But events of few years has left us wondering if this is actually the Goodluck we all queuedup to vote, the GEJ that interacted with the young people on social media prior to his election.
Luck can get you to an elevated position, but you need more than luck to do what is expected of that position.
Our President once told us he knows the sponsors of boko haram, how I wish he could call them by their names, backing it up with sufficient proof and then watch Nigerians deal with those people.
We are running out of patience.

That particular paragraph from her article, actually made me pause for a while and i asked myself what the president has been doing?what does he want to remember for in coming years? And most importantly what he plans to do.#we need a leader and not just a ceremonial president/ruler#

This piece obviously requires no tribal comments. All i want is all she stated. A peaceful and secured nation, or what else can we ask for? Mr. President needs to be a man many actions, not a man of ordinary media defensive words.

We need a President, simple.

What we have is a title holder, who has advisers whose guidance is clearly not in touch with reality.

When Dame syas she is 'ready to get shot' and the title holder demands the 'Borno Governor to bring the girls back without further delay', you know you have incompetent people at the helm of affairs.

Nigeria, make no mistake 2015, if Jona is not impeached before that time!

Dear Adiche,
It will be more realistic wishing for Okonkwo the fictitious character in Things fall apart to resurrect than to wish Jona to be all these ideals.Does a cat begin to act like a lion just cos its Feline? Can you turn a grass snake to an Anaconda? Best thing is to wish he is moved out of the way like Abacha was unceremoniously despatched!

From the north to the south, from the west to the east, cut across the billions of divide in terms of language, religion, way of life... all we ask for is a leader that has been clearly spelt out. even if you are a dwarf, a giant, able or disable physically. the needed ability is that of leadership and not that of fear or cowardice. we are surely paying for some of the previous bad deeds, it shall not be for long when God would grant us the one that would let us realise the pride of being Nigerian once again, and may our daughters, sisters, friends be found and rehabilitated to continue what they had earlier embarked on. i see in them hundreds of chimamanda's. just perhaps these experiences will one day turn them into the best sellers of a 'true life' story, the prayer is for them to be hale, hearty and healthy to learn and put them into precious words. we are a country of history and this is just part of our history. the plan is it won't define us, it will only motivate us and see us triumph to be a force to reckon with in unity and as a whole and may God be our judge

I wonder the sudden change of tactics? Or don't they believe in the imaginary heavenly virgins anymore?? Smh

Very nice write up! It reminds me of the kind of editorials i used to read in the guardian newspaper before the editor became an SA!
Well BH if one observes closely is multifold and its actions are used to help the govt eg. Prior to these recent attacks, there was the issue of CBN gov exposing missing $20billion, the same CBN gov being accused of financial recklessness, unjustifiable yet persisting fuel scarcity, kerosene subsidy funds running imto billions per day and ofcourse the issue of the petroleum minister and her private jets!
To help us forget these things BH has struck.
Fellow Nigerians never mistake GEJ's silence for cluelessness, the man is fully aware of all that is going on, his actions or in-actions are just as strategic.

Finally a key influencer who is not a sycophant sticks her neck out for us. The prime minister of Korea resigned his position because of the ferry disaster that claimed innocent lives. Our leadership have simply pushed their wide bottoms deeper into the seats of power in the wake of the series of disasters that have befallen this nation, shamelessly going on with business as usual. It is obvious that the issue of security is beyond Mr. President. Our national security adviser and various special assistants are still eating rice and chicken in office. Our musicians sing about rubbish, failing to directly address pertinent national issues for fear of being a target of the great 'them' like some have been in the past. We need to pray lest we keep waiting for Godot...

For someone who writes so beautifully and sounds so intellectual, believing Goodluck Jonathan can approximate all those things she just described is just so hilarious and borders on delusional. She must still have her fiction cap on and think this is a novel. The president has proven beyond any measure of doubt that he is absolutely incompetent to lead the country, through his words, actions and inactions. In typical Naija fashion, we must continue to believe that a miracle "is coming" and that somehow the mugu's brain will be reset and he will take out of this cesspit we have degraded to under his watch. By the time this guy is done with us it will be 1914 all over again. On the bright side, maybe we can start afresh and get it right this time.

Back to the matter, Ms Adichie had said it all, if only our dear president could listen to her, if only he could do a half of this, Insecurity will be a thing of past in my beloved country! Long live Ms Adichie.

A well articulate write up by Chimamanda. This is the plain and unalloyed truth. The shocking news is that even after the terrorists camp was identified by the military troop which confirms the rumors that the destination of terrorists was no secret, somebody whom we voted in, and gave all our hopes and trusts, was asking us to show him a clips or picture of the helicopters that delivers materials to the terrorists. Is this real? Please we need to send people to the president with Chimamanda's write up, and carefully interpret it word to word for him. He needs to get this message. Thank you Chimamanda!

I honestly think NLC should go on strike, so that GEJ can know we are not joking here. I heard him on TV tonight when he said the missing Malaysian plane the world is looking for hasn't been found, so we are not alone. What kind of leader says that. NLC president, I hope u re reading this, we need to go on strike, give FG seven days ultimatum to rescue this girls. I can imagine the sex feast the animals will be having with those girls daily. God please help Nigeria, bring this girls back home safely, nothing is impossible with you. Nigeria is all we have. I'm really In tears.

Very pertinent issues raised dear, I truly worry that after 3 years of consistently spending about 26% of the nation's budget on security, all we get is stick wielding, open your booth loving security forces and non functional CCTV cameras. What has happened to intelligence, covert operations and the likes in ensuring security. It is time to ask questions of our security forces or have they like the politicians taken the funds meant for nation building and development as National cake.

@Anonymous 6:38.
I think you are a disgrace and its because of people like you that our country is not moving forward. Chimamanda Adichie is a voice of Nigeria. She has better credence than our nincompoop president that rates the GDP of a nation by the number of private jets him and his croonies have. I am a Nigerian not resident in Nigeria and I can tell you this are sad and shameful times for all of us. Our president is a disgrace and we are tending towards a failed state. I pity you and the way you think and you are part of the 'failure' of the Nigerian system. 'Get lost' and 'Get a life"!!!

OJA_OYIBO N'IGBO said...

As much I respect Adichie's point of view... I can only wish...this fairy tell of a wish is applicable to the Nigeria of today
What she "wants" is presently an impossibility.
what she wants can only be achieved in a "country",Nigeria is not a country...Nigeria is just a forceful experimental combination of immiscible elements that will never make a "solution". This is the reason we constantly & knowingly pull each other down even if it means staying down ourselves (this is very evident even on social media). Nigeria has proven to be the most difficult country to govern with tribalism, Nepotism and religion as its major agents of backwardness and disunity. A country can only "work" as a single entity. If this confusion called Naija is at all interested in moving forward, then she should first of all create a system (including constitution) that would psychologically, economically and physically fill the cracks, joint us and make us function a single entity. Until then, this mixture of sand, kerosene and water will never work. #My10kobo

@Chimamanda Adichie.. I really don't think anything like BK exits in this country, I read politics and i understand politics...i GUESS it a planned work for the 2015 election forum for lack of concentration to other parties,i would not be surprised if the bombing we call BK is from the Government making it looks like the BK in charge, I am sorry i have to let you all know that Govt plays several hidden roles. GEJ knows what is doing. kindly go back to Hitler, Plato,Aristotle,Henri,Putin, and so on.. you would understand that politics is all about ideology. GEJ GOT AN IDEA TO PLAY

I really respect you , Chiamanda, but if you are really serious, and not simply seeking additional fame and awards through this mishap, you should be living the examples of people I would call "Makers of Change" - people like M. Gandhi, M. L. King, e.t.c. These individuals were writers like you, but the difference is that they acted more than they wrote on pages of papers. The results, their achivements, were, and still are, unspeakable. History has brought you to such a lofty position as they were during their times. You have ardent followers, people who would bring down a docile government and even help make those your wishes realized, if you ever 'put your boots on the ground'. I believe now is the time to make change, and not to speak or write rhetorics. Anyways, thanks for having the wisdom to remember this girls. There a some individuals of similar positions like yours who still do not take a second to stop and ponder about the evils in our country.

Ada m Chi-Chi you have spoken well but you must understand that there is more to this whole thing than what you feel. Am glad that you are just coming out of project involving Biafra war. The crisis we are facing today in this country is an interest induced crisis and as such must be followed with wisdom and patient. President Jonathan is by the grace of God wise and requires our patient to see a kind of result that will stand the taste of time. It was not by accident that God gave us Good Luck.

When those who have the true potential for leadership are afraid to rise up and those who don't have are rising and taking over, who do we blame? I am of the opinion that Vision, Gifts/Potentials, and Purpose as it relates what man is born to do, should be taught in schools. For when we discover ourselves and position ourselves rightfully then we can talk about a great Nigeria. wellofwaters.com/background/

Agreeing with you too. Love Adichie but like she criticized GEJ about being late to react, she is a little late with this article. We should have read this piece sometime in 2011/2012. She is a good 2 yrs behind. I still love her but lets keep it real..........

Anonymous said...

Words can develop into actions, and actions then patiently and gradually creating or finding solutions to critical problems.
All Nigerians are in this together, starting from the President down to the baby who just got delivered this very moment. The people must act in any way possible to see positive changes. The people must not do this by creating more problems for the nation.
There is a great leader in everyone, it starts from the inside. Take a look around and see what you can do for your country, not just yourself. Do for your country as you would do for yourself, only if you can.

You can do it, we can do it, we shall do it.

Chimaamanda, what you want is good. But the situation is no longer about wishes or dreams. What must we do as individuals and as a nation to break free of this bondage . . ., this slavery we call democrazy. . ., this curse we call Nigeria. . . Nne, what must be done? #SaveOurFuture
