Mixed reactions trail Muslimah beauty pageant won by Nigerian girl

Mixed reactions have trailed the just concluded World Muslimah Beauty Pageant organized for the Islamic womenfolk as a suitable option to the glamorous Miss World beauty pageant. The pageant which held in Jakatar, Indonesia last week, saw young Nigerian University of Lagos student, Aisha Ajibola Olabiyi, clinch the winning title, with a cash prize of $2,200 and a trip to Mecca.

Muslim women and scholars have reacted to the pageant. Some feel the pageant violated the Islamic rule on women, while others say it's a welcome development. See their reactions after the cut...

Islamic activist, Professor Lakin Akintola released a press statement commending the organizers of the pageant as well as felicitating with the winner. Professor Akintola said:
"We align with the contest in view of the fact that the criteria were not indecent exposure and provocative postures. The contestants were tested in the areas of recitation of the Glorious Qur'an, Islamic biography, Islamic jurisprudence and current affairs. The event has also proved beyond reasonable doubt that Islam doesn't repress its women neither does it push them to the background. The event has added another feather to the cap of Nigeria and the African continent as a whole.
However some other scholars have expressed their opinions against the pageant saying "Muslimah beauty is for the husband to see not the world."

Faraq Musadiq, the president of the Muslim Student Society of Nigeria, UNILAG chapter said:
Regardless of the goodness the organizers claim they are trying to achieve with it, the means is totally unlawful and both the end and the means must be justifiable by Islam. finally the prophet made it clear when he said "Whoever copies a group is part of them"
Also speaking against the pageant, the President of the Muslim Students's Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos Area Unit, Alhaji Qasim Badrudeen said
"We cant commend such act because it is not part of our religion. Our niqab (veil) is not for beauty contest. It is for modesty. Hijab is our epitome of honor and should be treated as such. It should not be used for a dog-to-play thing and we must know that because some people are doing it doesn't mean we should do it. Remember what our prophet said, anyone that behaves like them is one of them.
Aboo aamir al-Atharee, a popular Ede, Osun state Muslim Scholar said the Paegent is madness, foolishness, craziness, corruption of land calling to lewdness and obscenity. He said
"May Allah help Eka Ashanti, the Indonesian chief organizer of the contest to quick repentance".
A scholar for the pageant said:
"It is a good initiative but I don't support the word 'beauty contest' because there's nothing like that in Islam. They should have tagged it 'The World Quranic Competition or something else instead of pageant"
Aisha Zarumi described the pageant as a sinful act in the sight of Allah. She said
"It is madness of the highest order. Innovation is spreading everywhere. End time is near and the future of our kids is at stake. It is a horrible act, very shameful"
 Abiodun Subair said
"It is not what you contest for, simply because others are doing it. Do we really have to follow Christians in everything they do, even when it leads to doom? This is un-Islamic. We are described as the best ummah, so we are meant to be imitated, not imitating or copying people ignorantly."

my 4 cents...

1. I would like to see where Muslims will make a point without dragging Christians into the mix. It's pathetic!.
2. There is nothing wrong with this pageant, if anything this might encourage other pageants to promote modesty.
3. Why are some of you Muslims scared of the modern educated woman?. Don't worry all the education will not stop your wife from wiping your arse and feeding you.
4. I do believe that the barbaric actions of some Islam followers are doing so under the guise of the religion. I do not believe every muslim is a terrorist. Having said this, you guys need to chill. It is not by force to be Muslim.
P:S- Killing innocent people and blowing up yourselves does not guarantee you you 7 virgins. It does however guarantee you the fieriest corner of hell fire!

A word is enough for the wise.

they talk about copying!! hmmm they are already copying from the very beginning sef. The Quran is the old testament with some sinister aditions, today they do weddings almost like christain weddings with white dresses and wedding cakes!!, the have copied the christian rosary with their chesby, and one could go on and on! if they like they should go and do their own bikini with hijab . All they know to do is deceive and kill people in order to rule. Please people here should google "rule by deceit" and understand what they are all about.

The number 1 level of ignorance is 'the them". Who is the them? Are beauty pageants Christian events? Are they held in the church? Do they organisers say they hold the event to honour God? What kind of ignorant, miserable, stunted people are these??????t

These ppl keep claiming that d terrorists are not muslims yet those terrorists are ppl with islamic backgrounds and back up their terrorisms with sayings in d Quran. SMH @ confused set of ppl

Of cus islam is very clear and distinct in its rules which includes women shd remain in oblivion and their faces can't even be seen by anybody except their husbands. But mind u muslims have deviated in so many other forms from their old ways of practising islam all in d name of modernisation that is not restricted to beauty paegent and none of u ever talks about it.

@Farida.. 1st of all we didn't conclude that boko haram is muslim, everybody knws dey r, they themselves agree dey are. Dragging Christianity into d contest is not just jumping into conclusion, but also ignorance. When last did I even see miss world, who has d interest? Which CHRISTIAN would dress naked for d world? Cus u go to chrch doesn't make u a christian,Christian is living Christ, radiating his light,n nt by chrch going or non-mosque going.

They say dey aint copying us? The mosque beside ma house holds vigil, den on sunday dey'll bring out loud speakers, den sing sing sing with dos drums probably from saudi followed by dancing, dey share flyers for crusades, blocking d road with gigantic speakers, what do dey talk about? How Jesus is Lord but not God, grtest height of confusion. See d hijabs now worn, barely covers d shoulders, yet it has all d designs on d body,is dat how it is in saudi? They now have quran translations after tagging d bible as corrupt cus it has versions.

Christianity is NOT a religion, it is a way of life! The bible is der for us to learn from, nobody will come n tell u how to live ur life. That's d fun tin abt Christianity,we dnt live by laid down rules n routine, how man feels is right,'if u do dis no heaven,if u dnt do that 30times a week u will go to hell' bt we live by d revelations of d holy spirit.

Jesus said unto him, I am d way, d truth n d life, no man cometh unto the father but by me. John 14:6

There is no life outside Christ.
