Governor Fashola apologizes to the Igbos over destitude deportation

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola yesterday Thursday Sept. 26th apologized to the Igbos over the deportation of destitute from the state to Anambra State a few months back.

Governor Fashola tendered his apology at a ceremony to mark the Silver Jubilee anniversary of Aka Ikenga, an Igbo social-cultural group in Lagos. He said:
“The truth is that I do not have a problem with the Igbos, they know that because the largest herd of cattle I received during my father’s burial came from the Ndigbo. Those people who came under their many colours are not people I have a problem with, they are my kindred and my people. Also, there were people who did not clearly understand me and they have misunderstood words said or misrepresented actions taken in the way that it has pleased them to do so. To those people, I owe an explanation, not a defence of what has happened and that is partly why I am here.
“We have built a relationship based on tolerance, mutual respect, trust and love. That relationship was started by our ancestors, it was handed over to us and we have nourished it with a lot of trust, with a lot of understanding and with a lot of fidelity.

“Those who misunderstand that relationship, think that there is no value in that relationship, I have come here to correct that because I place a lot of value on that relationship. If those people have misunderstood me or they have misunderstood actions taken by our government, here, now and today, I offer an unqualified and unreserved apology."

“Why should people feel compelled to migrate from one place to the other? Is there one part of this country that is less endowed whether in human or natural resource? Is that the problem? Is it the case that perhaps some parts are so endowed or not adequately managed?"

“Those are the honest debates that we must have. The political storm is gathering and allusions have been made to the issues I address, not only by the chairman, but by the President of Ohaneze Ndigbo. How can development be so difficult in the part of Nigeria that gave us Ike Nwachukwu, Chinua Achebe, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Odumegwu Ojukwu, Alex Ekwueme and so on, how can development be so difficult in that part of this country? I think those are the real issues.”

“I think we have been in the news of our relationship for the wrong reasons in the last few weeks, but if you listen to the voices of those who speak the loudest, you would see that they do not speak about us, they do not speak about the problems, but about themselves. The majority of us are concerned about how to make it better, that is what concerns us always in Lagos, and it is not an easy decision for me.”

"The pursuit of making it better makes us adopt policies which are always subject to the human text of fallibility”.

Good thing the Governor apologized and cleared the air.
Often times, the comment board is littered with a lot of stupid hate comments from both Igbos and Yorubas, blindly calling each other names and even wishing death on one another.
Its funny because, there's a war and we aren't even aware...we are unconscioulsly destroyin one another while the corrupt leaders loot our treasury.
Its about time we unite and fight against our common enemy;Corrupt Leaders and not fight against ourselves on blogs.
Remember what happened between the Tutsis ans Hutsus in Rwanda?I'm afraid all these scuffle might come to that if we don't unite as one.

As an Igbo man, I accept his apology. But as a Nigerian I do not, because this another way to campagne. He wants people to look at him as "saint". Yes saint, for APC has no honest person to do the 2015 job, if not fashola, and now he has misused the power he has to offend over 40percent tribe of race. The igbos. Anyway Cheers. Engr Emy.

I am forced to place my comment here for the first time. Please if you are intellectually poor you don't need to publish a comment that would show how ignorant and bias you are. So much respect should be given to Gov. Fashola for his ability to tender his apology to the Igbo people despite the circumstance that surrounds the entire saga. I must say this is a right step in the right direction. Lets critically look at the content of the speech and you will understand the purpose of the apology. Lets leave politics and focus on leadership.

apology accepted Mr Fashola. My fellow libes, let us use this forum to address issues objectively instead of pointing accussing fingers at the governor. i am ibo leaving in lagos. it is high time we raise our voices together to correct our leaders in general. first of all, these destitutes from igbo extraction come from homes made up of relatives. if we even dig further, we will be shocked to realise that most of them are related to the highly placed people in the society. what we need here is honest help from relatives to be relatively comfortable. charity begins at home...they say. Again, our leaders are not doing enough to create job opportunities, no meaningful industries in igbo land. If only our government can build industries starting from agriculture, igbos may not have need migrating from our land. we have natural resources to tap from but instead the leaders enrich themselves and oppress the poor. If we do what we are suppose to do as a government and as a people, we will have no reason to shift blame to any governor such as Fashola. Let us develop ourselves and fatherland first and foremost.

Why are folks saying Fashola apologised? Fashola was clearly not apologising, he was actually asking the Igbo leaders to develop their areas rather than focusing energies on laying claim on areas where indigenes have provided enabling environment for people to flourish. (How can development be so difficult in the part of Nigeria that gave us Ike Nwachukwu...I think those are the real issues). A number of Igbos firmly believe that the success of Lagos is because of the Igbos - if they are so good why has the south east not seen such progress? Success of Lagos is due to the contribution of people from all parts of Nigeria.

I think gov.. Fashola has raised some good points. The eastern part of Nigeria is blessed with loads of natural and human resources. In fact the human resources from Ibo land has contributed emmensely to the development of most parts of Nigeria. I totally agree that what we in Ibo land lack is food leadership. We are fueled by greed. Everyone wanting to take, take, take and not give to the enhancement of their lands. We could with good management identify what our strengths are in terms of natural resources and working with the brilliant minds we have lost via brain drain, work to create a region that attracts rather than loses people. It's time we began to think about how we can give back to our region that has been pillaged mostly as a result of out lack of good management.
Having said that, everywhere in the world, people have the right to migrate. There are big cities in most countries that attract majority of the workforce. Take London, Newyork LA, etc. everywhere in the world, u find most people migrating towards commercial and administrative centers. This shoildnt be a problem in so far as they have the right to work and live in those places -as they clearly do in this case.
In the defense of Ibo people, we are quite business minded. And Lagos being the commercial capital of the country would most definitely experience a huge influx of such migrants. Shipping of people will do nothing to resolve this issue but will only end up sparking ethnic and political confusion.
Whilst I appreciate the case made by the governor of Lagos state, I believe the best way to deal with this would be for both parties to take useful messages out of this. 1st Ibo ppl unite and think about how you would want to proceed to make ur land the envy of the nation. Develop an action plan and get on it! The journey of a thousand miles begins with a step after all. On the part of the Lagos State government, perhaps more time should be spent thinking of ways to better utilize the continuous flow of human resources with the aim of continually increasing the economy of the state. As I believe that continued migration from all parts of Nigeria to Lagos will not be a reclining trend in the next few decades.

He actually took a jab at the igbos. This is not an apology per say. He told the igbo governors to make the south2ast a good place so destitutes would stop trooping in to lagos. The south east should hold their political office holders responsible for the insults they get from left right and center. Besides if u people claim to have developed lagos, I keep askng, wiv all the igbos in the south-east, why is it still like that? Does charity not begin at home again? Wiv the way the country is going, there might not be nigeria by 2015. What would u people do? There is trouble in the land and a lot of us don't no. Think home! And yes lagos was a capital before, but if not because we had good leaders wiv the right policies, lagos won't be like this today. Lagos would have been dead! Have u seen the major developments going on in other south-west states? They don't wait for F.G governments presence. The nexxt state to take over lagos is ogun state. The development is CRAY. So many industries left rght and center. In a couple of years ogun would be something else. I hope u igbos won't say u developed that place. What kalu said about lagos can cause a War. About being "no mans land" can any sane person go to aba and say its a no mans land? People need to be careful wiv their utterances. Lastly fashola apologised to those that mis-understood him but more deportations would happen. Just watch.

Someone better tell that Fashola and that "turn coat" idiot called Okorocha as well that "shrine kneeling" hypocrite called Ngige that it doesn't matter what they do or say. APGA is the only party the Igbos truly identify with and no amount 'theatrics' will make APC win the election in Anambra

@ MICH I LOVE YOUR COMMENT! @ seyi ur comment makes sense too but u came across as a bit tribalistic. anyways im happy fashola apologised and addressed the issue cause the first time i saw the deportation thing i didnt think it was a big deal. i mean how many homeless people can one takse care of. if u do not have a home and they cant provide for u. the govt should take u back to your state. whether u are igbo hausa edo or whatever. thats the most logical thing that can be done. and for those saying why cant the govt provide for the homeless that they do it in europe and the us and all of that. do u pay the same amount of tax someone of ur class is paying in those countries. if u dont then abeg shut up and enlighten yourself.

now lastly people need to stop looking down on people of other tribes. the same way u find a yoruba girl stupid is d same way someone else finds an igbo girl stupid. and the same way someone things an hausa man is lazy or wicked is the same way another person thinks an igbo man is greedy and a yoruba man is a corward or whatever.
so its all about your opinion. do not form opinions based on hate. it doesnt make sense.

nigeria as a country already has alot of problems we do not need to develop hatered for our fellow brothers and sisters... lets look at how we can develop the country and lets be our brothers keeper

we should focus on removing corrupt leaders and eradicating corruption on all levels. when i look at some people who are corrupt even as security men or bank managers i then begin to wonder how they expect to not be corrupt when they are presidents, governors and all of that. it starts from u. u cant expect someone else to do something u cannot do. if u cannot live a corrupt free life then dont expect nigeria to move forward

also i respect fashola for bringing the fact that what we need is development and good leaders into light. i dont care if its cause of the upcoming election.

I was really worried, troubled that I began to loose hope increasingly in the geographical entity called Nigeria if a man of Babtunde's towering statue could fail too. Seyi.E I cn c u ar very deluded! It's lazy bigots like u dat cause confusion here & there with their stupid & recklessly comments.
D developmnt u see in Lagos & its environ (including Ogun State) is as a result of its once federal capital status, which attracted non-Yorubas to invest their lives therein. If u need to brag abt Yoruba cities, talk abt Abeokuta, Ibadan, Akure, Oshogbo, Ado-ekiti, Ogbomoso. Which of these ur cities is more developed than Enugu, Owerri, Onitsha, Afikpo, Umuahia, Aba, Awka? None!
Yoruba charity begins with trooping to UK to buy choice properties leaving their regional capital & other SW cities as pig farms in leprous state with illiteracy, filth & juju pervading d land, & d ppl living in squalor, abject poverty & illiteracy despite ur boast of being d most educated tribe. Stop lazying abt & attaching ursef to d prosperity of other tribes.

If Lagos wasnt a 'no man's land', a riff-raff like Bola Tinubu, whose birth and academic certificates are fake, would not have been governor and lord of the manor. If indigeneship remains a yardstick for who gets what or who gets deported, Bola Ahmed Tinubu should hv bn deported to Bornu State where he originally hails from. It's an open secret that the late Alhaja Mogaji was never his biological mother. But if he was allowed to govern Lagos State for eight years while he ws appropriating almost a half of Lagos then u & ur lots are on a wild goose chase harassing any non-indigene.

Lagos is a gathering for all Nigerians. Lagos state belongs to all. The Igbo people & other tribes have contributed & are still contributing immensely to the development of Lagos. People from different states filled up Lagos, & made it the commercial nerve centre, most valued state, most populated; pay the highest amount of tax and the state govt receives huge federal allocation by virtue of the teeming population.
Lagos State is the biggest beneficiary of Nigeria's infrastructure development. Nigeria & Nigerians hv pumped more into that small space than any place in the past 100 years. Now, some lazy people are laying claim to Lagos where every other Nigerians of all tribes hv a great stake in.
Lagos is very different from other states of Nigeria for the fact that Lagos was once an administrative and a commercial capital of Nigeria with most of her infrastructures built up using our common patrimony.
FYI, Awolowo plotted to shut down the eastern economic zone bt after some years d Igbos bounced back. Many Igbos & other tribes moved to Lagos bcos of d skewed distribution of infrastructures - airport, seaport, embassies.
Yorubas lost d golden opportunity to hv Lagos for keeps during 1967 - 1970 wen they conspired with Hausa/Fulani to fight Igbos from having their own country. Right nw u can't hv ur cake & eat it! If u feel otherwise tk ur battle to d streets to test ur might.

Actually, he apologised for the "misunderstanding" not the actual deportation. When the Northerners were being deported no one was up in arms. Instead a lot of people were like "Yes, deport the beggars! They are Boko Haram!" Why are the Igbos more sacred. It seems there is a severe delusion of grandeur on your parts, for you to say Igbos made Lagos what it is today. With or without you, Lagos WILL survive! And no I am not Igbo, Yoruba or Hausa....just a concerned Nigerian who is disgusted by all the ethnic bigotry!

@seyi, it's nt our fault that you lot are lazy. Lagos doesn't sound like ogun or osun. Neither does lagos look like rusted cities of ogun, osun, ondo etc. But lagos has same development signature with every major city in east, even vilas. U go ahead and claim Lagos as yorubaland, we go ahead and claim it as nigerian land, and this until the country divides, and we go our separate ways. Even then, u can't usurp our properties, we sell to u or keep it.

Unknown said...

For me what Fashola did was wrong, we are in the 21century not the fifties or forties, he is just trying to shift the attention from him self by saying what he did was right. You can not deport someone from his own country. All over the world there is a particular state that is most populated because of its economic value. You have it in America, China, India, Ghana South Africa etc. In New york it's so over populated that the rooms are very tiny. I was never for the deportation of the beggars and am not in support of this too. Many parts of the east are developed enugu, imo state, amambra state are all developed. He can not talk about development in deportation, because as I will say again there are more high raised buildings and industries in New York then in Orlando and other states.

Hello mr. confusionist stop deviating frm d crux of d matter. Who is saying without them Lagos will not survive. Arrant nonsense! Stop staying idle and attaching yourself to d prosperity of others.
Don't call evil good because of blind tribal allegiance. If all the Yoruba taxi drivers all over Rivers state are forcefully arrested, detained, labelled beggars & then sent back to Yorubaland, wd u b stating dis gibberish?
How cn Yoruba armed thugs, not even the Nigerian police, have d powers to arrest or detain anyone? These Igbos were held without trial in illegal dungeons & concentration camps in Lagos. They were then loaded in cattle trucks and driven 500 km (no food, no drink, no rest) and dumped at night in a public highway and left to die. The only excuse of these African neo-fascists is that the victims are "destitute" and that they want to transform Lagos into a mega-city!
But there are rules even for transporting animals.
You pick up Igbo traders at random, imprison them without trial, drive them 500km with no food water or rest and leave them to die in the cold at night because you call them destitute. And you don't see that as wickedness.

That something illegal and unconstitutional happened 50 years ago unchallenged, does not mean it can happen continually. If you choose to accept it when others were involved, that's your cup of tea. It is purely illegal and unconstitutional for anyone or government in Nigeria, to either deport or dislocate Nigerian citizens from one State to another within the Sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It can set a very bad precedent whereby people of other ethnic groups can just be kidnapped and transported indiscriminately across the length and breadth of Nigeria, under the guise of destitution or mental retardation - which is a disease anyway.

Point of order! It is really jaw dropping and despicable for you to come online and throw around stupid allegations that are easily verifiable.
Yorubas are fond of such acts of provocation. The genocidal civil war revealed their pathological hatred for Ndigbo. Yorubas were the most vocal tribe to incite other ethnic nationalities to hate Ndigbo and opined that all nigeria's ills would be cured if ndigbo were totally exterminated from the face of the earth. Ndigbo don't need to be told that Yorubas are wicked (even to themselves), malicious, treacherous, dubious and undisirable to have as friends...

U sound too confused to be coherent. U should have insisted that it is Yorubas that developed Lagos! If indeed Yorubas provided the enabling environment for pple to flourish in Lagos, why have Ibadan, Ogbomoso, Abeokuta, Oshogbo, Ado-ekiti and Akure not seen the type of progress and development as being witnessed in Lagos - a state collectively built by Nigerians??? Go and develop these filthy capital cities of yours and stop the senseless laying claims to Lagos, which was and still been developed by oil wealth and the sweat of other Nigerians; it's sheer arrogance and greed borne out of laziness.

Fellow brothers and sister your comments has shown truly the reflection of what nigeria is and also the kind ofwork that is needed to be done.

First and fore most the deportation was strange to me and. On that sphere its wrong. The hayes yorubas and ndigbos had been reported fro there own country. Its outside our constitution.

How ever not connected though. Pls which one of us is proud of James Ibro, alarms and ahost of the leaders we once had. Intact even now only theapc govs are doing the work while others are fightiing fir 2015.

We are annoyed its normal I wont take the insult yes. But look across the country is either the governors is fightiing for 2015 or quietly stealing only in the south west that our governors are busy right now.

Governors fasola you fall my hand fir those deportatiin but reading your comment and carpetting your fellow acolleagues is a challenge in right direction.

My brothers irs time to ask these. Ppl.
