Pope Benedict XVI to resign on February 28th

Pope Benedict XVI will resign on February 28, 2013, a Vatican spokesman said today Monday February 11th. The 85-year-old German-born Pope said he was resigning because he no longer has the strength to fulfill the duties of his office. If the Pope resigns February 28th, he will be the first pontiff since 1415 to step down. See the Pope’s full resignation statement after the cut...

Dear Brothers,

I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church.

After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry.
I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering.

However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me.

For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.

Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff.

With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.

I am sure his health must have been failed him and he is not able to perform effectively as a pope. Handing over to a more healthy person is the best option, rather than dying in that position without an impact. Our leaders should learn from this knowing that political positions is not your birth right but an opportunity to make positive changes in their communities NOT chance for embezzlement of public funds.

I think the Pope has demonstrated a high level of humility and integrity by making this declaration which I'm sure was not an easy one. It is indeed a big lesson to leaders in Nigeria and Africa especially that one is not higher than his/her office. His decision highlights the fact that a position of authority is indeed a call to service and if one feels he is not of sound health of mind and/or body one should politely and quietly resign. Without mentioning any names, there r number of Nigerian governors and leaders who are seriously in poor health--what do they do? They leave their offices vacant for months and affairs of state unattended to for months on end while junketting the globe seeking treatment. Again, No one is bigger than the office they occupy, it is not your heritage. The show must go on.......

It is a very honorable action!

The man has accepted that he is frail physically to effectively perform the role and responsibilities.

It is a lesson to those public office holders (Suntai, Sullivan Chime, Imoke and their likes) who know they are incapacitated but would rather allow the scenario of Umaru and Turai Yaradua to play out; where others use their name and take advantage of their incapacity to ascribe powers unto themselves.

A lesson in humility for the wise!

Yes, according to Canon Law (No. 322, Par 2), a pope can resign from office, provided it is freely made. While this is a rare occurrence, he isn't the first pope to resign (probably about the 5th). Instead of making snide remarks, or making unproven assertions, I think we should respect his decision and move on. And nope I am not catholic - Alero

Nilla said...

A pope can resign, just that its very rare! The first pope that resigned was Gregory in the year 1415! Its an Office for life, but you can resign if you feel that you cant perform again due to ill health or personal decision. A pope must not die in office!

No matter wahat happens...Catholic for life !

It's so strange that the pope is "resigning" fews days after the British parliament passed a law supporting gay marriage. There re two major denominations in Christian dorm which is catholic and Anglican. The Anglican church (except African branches) is already in support of gay marriage. The rate at which the western world is driving this gay thing is increasingly alarming. I just hope the pope wasn't pressurized to "resign" to pave way for a pro-gay pope. We Christians should really pray hard cos the end is near.

A pope can resign base on the cannon code. The last pope resigned in 1415 by name Gregory xii. If it has never been done, the Catholic church known for its rules would have prevented him. He is begin sincere to all by admitting his weak strength for the sake of the mission. Some leaders can learn from this.

I DON'T BELIEVE THE VATICAN OR POPE BENEDICT XVI.

WE, THE WORLD / UNIVERSE, DESERVE THE TRUTH.

FELLOW NIGERIANS, OPEN YOU EYES AND STOP BEING GULLIBLE. THERE'S MORE TO THE REASON BEHIND HIS SO CALL "RESIGNATION." THERE IS NO SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE. HE DID NOT "RESIGN" BECAUSE OF "HEALTH" REASONS OR WHATEVER.

IS CHRIST NOT A HEALER? WHAT ILLNESS COULD A POPE HAVE THAT CHRIST CANNOT HEAL? POPE BENEDICT XVI AND THE VATICAN ARE NOT TELLING US THE TRUTH.

DO YOUR RESEARCH ABOUT POPE BENEDICT XVI BEFORE PRAISING HIM FOR STEPPING DOWN. I DON'T BELIEVE THEIR STUPID PR AND DAMAGE LIMITATION EXERCISE.

IN THIS DAY AND AGE WHAT CAN FORCE A POPE TO STEP DOWN? SCANDAL? SEX RELATED SCANDAL? GO READ POPE BENEDICT XVI'S LAST TWEET [ @PONTIFEX ] "WE ARE ALL SINNERS." WHAT IS THE SIN ON HIS CONSCIENCE THAT IS SO SERIOUS AND HAS LED TO HIS RESIGNATION? A POPE DOES NOT SIMPLY RESIGN EXCEPT IT IS A SERIOUS MATTER WHICH HAS BROUGHT THE VATICAN, CATHOLICISM AND CHRISTIANITY INTO SERIOUS DISREPUTE.

WHATEVER MADE POPE BENEDICT XVI RESIGN IS VERY AND SO SERIOUS THAT WORLD LEADERS DO NOT WANT TO KNOW HIM. WATCH THE NEWS. WATCH THE NEWS. HOW MANY WORLD LEADERS ARE SAD TO SEE POPE BENEDICT XVI STEP DOWN? HOW MANY? NONE. THEY KNOW THE TRUTH, AND HAVE RIGHTLY KEPT THEIR DISTANCE.

THE ONLY TRUTH IN POPE BENEDICT XVI'S PRESS STATEMENT IS THAT HE IS STEPPING DOWN ... HIS CONSCIENCE ..., BUT, AS FOR HIS HEALTH, POPE BENEDICT XVI IS HEALTHY ENOUGH TO CONTINUE IN HIS ROLE. HEALTH OR OLD AGE IS NOT THE TRUTH WHY THE VATICAN PUSHED HIM OUT. IF POPE BENEDICT XVI WANTS TO CLEAR HIS CONSCIENCE, THEN HE NEEDS TO TELL THE TRUTH.

THREE THINGS CANNOT BE LONG HIDDEN: THE SUN, THE MOON, AND THE THRUTH. HONESTY IS THE GREATEST TRUTH. DISHONESTY IS THE GREATEST FALSEHOOD. THERE IS HONOUR AND GREATNESS IN HONESTY.

Point of correction, His Holiness didn't resign he is retiring. It is a normal practise in Catholic Church for Bishop's to retire when they attain certain age or not strong enough to carry out their duties due to age or on health conditions.
Please do not be mis-informed about this, His Holiness Benedict the XVI is not resigning as pope but retiring due to old age.

The person coming after Pope Benedict XVI was referred to by John as the Son of Perdition and St. Malachy as Peter the Roman.

Rev 17:1 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and talked with me, aaying to me, "Come, I will show you the judgment of the GREAT HARLOT who sits on many waters.

2. with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication (idolatry).

3. So he carried me away in the Spirit into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sitting upon a SCARLET (RED) BEAST which was full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.

4. The woman was arrayed in PURPLE and SCARLET (RED), and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication.
(Note: The College of Cardinals wears red while the College of Bishops wears purple).

5. And on her forehead a name was written:

MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.

9. Here is the mind which has wisdom: The seven heads are the seven mountains on which the woman sits (Rome is referred to as "The City of Seven Hills - U can google it. If the City of Seven Hills is Rome, who is the Great Harlot that sits on it.).

10. There are seven kings. Five have fallen, one is (Pope John Paul II), and the other is not yet come (Pope Benedict XVI). And when he comes, he must continue a short time (he came in April 2005 and is resigning Feb 2013, barely 8yrs).

11. The beast that was, and is not, is himself also the eigth, and is of the seven, and is going to perdition (this is the last pope).

Rev 13:11 Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb (a religious figure) and spoke like a dragon.

12. And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes the earth and those who dwell in it tp worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

13. He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men.

Pls read the rest of the verses (14-18).

In the Prophecy of the Popes, St. Malachy wrote of the 267th Pope:

"Glory of the Olive."
Joseph Ratzinger, Benedict XVI (2005-2013).
He chose the regnal name Benedict after St Benedict of Nursia, founder of the Benedictine Order. The Order's crest contains an olive branch.

Of the 268th Pope, St. Malachy wrote:

Peter the Roman, who will nourish the sheep in many tribulations; when they are finished, the CITY OF SEVEN HILLS will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people. The end.

Rev 17:15 Then he said to me, "The waters which you saw, where the harlot sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and tongues.

16. And the ten horns which you saw on the beast, these will hate the HARLOT, make her desolate and naked, eat her flesh and burn her with fire.

18. And the woman whon you saw is that GREAT CITY (The Vatican) which reigns over the kings of the earth.

He that reads let him understand.

Farewell to an Uninspiring Pope :)

I have watched the wealth of the Catholic Church turned into a subsidy for wrongdoing and a prop for the continuing campaign against women’s rights and homosexuality.

Pope's resignation was not forced by health issues, spokesman says. said...

Pope's resignation was not forced by health issues, spokesman says.

Remember the whole world was lied to by the vatican that his resignation was due to health reasons?

Pope Benedict XVI is not suffering from any specific disease that forced him to resign, his spokesman said Tuesday - adding that it was a "spiritual" decision.

Why did they lie about his health? Are they covering up something? Why are they not stating the truth as to why he was made redundant?

What is the "spiritual" issue that is on his conscience that made him decide to step down and which also made him tweet "we are all sinners."? Did he commit any sin? If yes, when, and what sin?

Watch the news.

The truth will come out, eventually.
