Did Burberry copy Nigerian designer, Jewel by Lisa?
Left is Lisa Folawiyo on the cover of Genevieve Magazine in one of her Jewel By Lisa designs (2009). Right is the Burberry Spring 2012 Accessories, and they used the same circle print used by JBL in 2009.
What do you think? Copy or coincidence?

They copied joor. Except u wanna say Lisa came to d future n took their designs. Lmao. African fashion is d way forward!!!!
Of course they didn't copy her. Its a frigging fabric for crying out. They can purchase fabric from any bleeding place and unless she has buyers/exclusive right to that fabric, she should expect to see it designed into everything even a tampax! I was ready to go at Burberry when I read the headline but then I now opened the post and saw it was the fabric copied and not like the same shirt style or dress design. I beg lisa take several seats jo
Does Jewel by Lisa copy Topshop designs and make them with Ankara? Did Lisa manufacture the fabric herself? She must have bought bales of the same fabric the same way Burberry bought bales from Vlisco/Hollandis. She shouldn't hype herself please. Ankara isn't even African print!
First and foremost Linda, this print were made for Africans by the Dutch..that was before Africans started making a copyright.. Others are allowed to use the fabric and Lisa should know because she works with Vlisco fabrics.
Copy lisa? Purleze!!!! I have the same fabric, can she pls twit that one gairl so copied my fabric? Or is it cos its burberry and she wants to seek notice??? Mshewwww!!! I thot that girl was humble.is she the owner of the factory that made that fabric?? Abeeggiii make she go siddon for dorty jooo....
Is JBL the designer of the fabric itself? Is the fabric design a trademark of JBL? That fabric design has been around for ages..I have it, my mother had it and so did my grandmother and great grand mother! Lisa used the fabric so did Burberry! The fact that Lisa used that fabric first doesn't give her the right to claim ownership of that design.
Her tweet reminds me of the palm oil story in nigeria. Indonesians/malaysians(not sure) came to nigeria, took samples of palm kernel and today they are one of the largest exporters. I'm not saying lisa is as stupid as our predecessors but...this is what over-exposure causes. Its easy to get to the top but more difficult to stay there. Sorry JBL, reinvent your brand.
Linda, African fashion is now in. Lace dresses you find in Balogun market are being sold in London high streets for over £150!!! Nigerian designers need to get in on this very quickly.
it's a bloody coincidence for crying out loud. I mean this is a material that can be bought anywhere by anyone. It's not like she manufactured the material.
Nope! I do not totally agree that Burberry copied JBL. They might have gotten the "inspiration" from seeing some of her designs where she used that particular fabric but I do not think JBL can make any legitimate copyright/trademark infringement claims. That fabric has been in use for a very long time. My mum had that fabric, albeit in a different colour, when we were growing up and since JBL is not the creator of the fabric she cannot lay claim to it. Or is it because it is Burberry? Why doesn't she cry out about "copying" when other Nigerian designers/tailors do the whole ankara sequin/ jewels embellishment thing that she made popular. It's about time Nigerian designers start hiring fabric designers or start designing their own fabrics so they can have exclusivity of the designs. Until then, in my opinion there is no justification for laying claim to copyright/trademark for the use of the fabric and also no justification for the cutthroat prices they charge.
it's a bloody coincidence for crying out loud. I mean this is a material that can be bought anywhere by anyone. It's not like she manufactured the material.
This pattern has been around for ages and its not even the exact same copy, and its not like it was part of her collection or anything like that, unless she had exclusive rights to the fabric, then she had better kept quiet.
This is ankara please and anyone can buy it anywhere,i used ankara yesterday to design my fixed nails, ankara is being used for shoes and bags now,so please they didnt copy
abeg she shud go and sit down. as if nigerian designers are original. abi is she the only one that has that design. even if they visited her studio or wateva. all designers get "inspiration" by copying.
Those are two different fabrics with separate patterns but similar colour schemes. Either way, she doesn't have exclusive rights to them so has no claim. Make we hear word jor! Hia!
now this is not a story JBL, i remember d material a naija designer used for Matilda(Angela) Tinsel in her recent photo shoot was 1st brought our by woolies south africa, i even have the material made in a different style, so make woolworths SA come arrest d naija designer for using the fabric right? pls shift i beg, u can make shishi from this as u know get case, if u want to lay claim to a fabric pls buy the whole design off oyinbo, then u can be talking of exclusivity otherwise OYO na him u dey sis, wl post d link of d dress and u'll all see, immediately i saw that dress, am like waoh this designer redesigned this material what d heck? naija and over sabi
Dis same ankara dat i have been using to tie wrapper inside house for donkey years. Abeg ankara will soon become unafordable o. Any serious naija designer shd learn to work wif our indigenous fabrics - adire, aso oke, tiv blk / white stripes, fulani fabric, etc etc etc or better still go invent ur own fabric
this is just a cloth that comes in different shades n its a vlisco design... Am a designer too n if u want ur fabrics to be exclusive u better do the fabric designing yourself...abeg why would they copy u???ok lets say vlisco now used their own cloth to make a bag(cos they now do) what will u say?? Vlisco copied u??u are too big for this jargon u dey blow na...
This is just a case of pot calling kettle black. Lisa is not in a position to sue anyone. Doesn't she sit there and copy designs from Vogue, Elle, Instyle all day long, producing them in ankara and then marking up the price 300%. Its a good business model and her designs are relatable to people abroad because hey!, its the same designs in Vogue. So if Burberry have used the same print she uses, good for them.
Lisa get off ur high horse please! Ur designs r not even original just say u put beads on top? Na u get material? Gwen stefani didn't she use Ankara sometime ago too? So my mother's umu Ada meeting should sue her for using their meeting ankara abi? If its for copying designers do it well just in diff fabrics and naija designers carry world cup for copying. Shikena!
This is just about the most ridiculous claim of being copied that I have seen all my life. Earlier comments have said it all. How can someone go to the market, buy a fabric and make a blouse, then claim that another person who went to the market and bought the same fabric and made a bag is copying her.
Linda, please stop posting everything sent to your email. That's how you publish something about an anonymous claim to a man by an unknown person which could have been sent just to embarrass the couple by anyone, even an employee of the man.
Why are we Nigerians like this?,everybody is getting on her case because she said Burberry copied her. What if the case was reversed, wont we all be the first to jump on the band wagon to say that she copied? Lets give our people some credit. The forigen designers never wanted to have any thing to do with ethnic fabrics, they term it too colourful. They make all the Hollandis,Brocade and lace fabrics all for African comsuption. And FYI, Ankara materials are made in Nigeria, Then,Ghana prints are made in Ghana. So thanks to our local designers who are now showcasing our fabrics, and international designers are now getting inspiried to use them.
Have you heard of retinol and how it transforms and defies lines and wrinkles?, its an awesome age-defying product! http://www.thestunninglady.blogspot.com
JBL is just a mumu...na U̶̲̥̅̊ design and print d fabric? Thief catch thief....that aside, anyone else notice how big her head is for her body in that pic?
This gal Lisa whatever, you well so?! Your design indeed! Go siddon for corner, yeye girl, and you Linda, you are worse for bringing us boring stories today. And of course, you will never show my comment since I'm not among "the favoured ones" LONG HISS
Common sense isn't common. She should try and lay an intellectual property claim to the color 'blue' as well while she's at it.she wouldn't be foolish enough to file an infringement suit against burberry. Then again, I'm pretty sure burberry will counter sue her for stupidity and blatant ignorance lol
Ur known so why the cheap publicity!.. You just mad a fool out of urself with this!.. Is the fabric yours! Goes to show how low your mentality is and how low you can be! *
Lisa, pls pls pls, who are you in the scheme of things when it comes to the Burberry brand and reputation and gbo-gbo eh? I dont understand how someone who just copies styles from Vogue, Elle, Topshop, Next etc and makes them into ankara can now turn round and claim she was copied. Pls all you guys on this blog who used to have maybe ur mai-guards little kids wearing ankara dresses with cute accessories sewn onto them, raise your hands up. Cos growing up in the late 80s/ early 90s, our maiguards 5 and 7yr old daughters used to wear pretty ankara dresses sewn from their mum's left over fabric. Lisa should take a seat on several electric chairs, biko!!!
Doesnt look the same to me anyway,,cuz burrberry is more distinct aπϑ outstanding dan hers ,,so i juz dont understand †ђξ claim she's tryna lay here #smh
Chei LIB commentators! You people will not kill me. Ignorance is a disease! How in the world did Burberry copy? Does Jewel by Lisa own the material? "ni kini? se gini?" said it all.
Abeg lisa,u nor try,@ ur level of exposure I xpect u 2b more sensible than dis. 4cryin out loud dis a fabric dat can b bought anywere,so wat stupid claim do u ve ova it,go&hide ur face jare
If Lisa were to sue, she would loose in court. the only way she would win is if she owned the rights to the Ankara patterns, material, etc. if she just simply made clothing out of the fabric then she has no leg to stand on. Burberry would have also made sure they covered their asses in terms of copyright infringement.
Anon April 23, 2012 6:30 PM, pls reveal yourself with your designer details, looking for one.
With regards to copy or no copy, that is what happens when pple feel starstruck when oyinbo visits them, ni gba no nko, when they visited your studio nko, you now own Vlisco abi. Pls park well jor Lisa.
The ankara design is free for all and no one can claim any right to it.But the fact that Burberry visited the Jewel By Lisa store may mean they purposely sought out the fabric they had seen @ Lisa's store.

This pattern has been around for ages and its not even the exact same copy, and its not like it was part of her collection or anything like that, unless she had exclusive rights to the fabric, then she had better kept quiet.
Isn't that a basic ankara print? I guess they got inspired seeing just how beautiful her designs wear and decided to bag hand bags with them
win win
lisa if you don't sue and have it banned as well as being paid compensation then you are not a designer shikena
This is ankara please and anyone can buy it anywhere,i used ankara yesterday to design my fixed nails, ankara is being used for shoes and bags now,so please they didnt copy

This is what happens when an African designer refuses to understand Intellectual property laws/ and common business principles.

JBL. U hv been downgraded from designer to tailor. Instead of you to start promoting your designs in the same fabric, u are crying foul. Oponu sowenu
imitation is the best compliment.
