The statement reads in part
“It is illegal, unlawful and unconstitutional for NYSC to hold camp at a time when its Muslim members will be deprived of their freedom of worship and the liberty to practice their creed without fear. This planned camp is exclusive, discriminatory and parochial. We do not want to believe that the shift was deliberately planned to coincide with the Ramadan season with a view to excluding prospective Muslim corpers. MURIC is not trying to indulge Muslim youths. Fasting is no joke and it certainly cannot be combined with the physical challenges which characterize the NYSC camp.
Firstly, morning drills in NYSC camps are known to be rigorous and the soldiers in charge will not take excuses. Dehydration sets in later in the day particularly in the hotter regions of Nigeria.
Secondly, adequate sahuur (early morning meal taken approximately between 4 am and 5.15 am) cannot be guaranteed in the NYSC camp. Neither can the futuur (meal taken at sunset to break fast ) be timely as camp schedules are bound to ignore and subsume this very important period.
Thirdly, attending orientation camp and partaking in the energy-sapping activities on empty stomach is an indubitable invitation to health crisis. NYSC may therefore be inviting Muslim corpers to step on landmines in the planned orientation camp if it holds as presently scheduled.
There is more to Ramadan than ordinary fasting. That is on the surface. The whole month of Ramadan is a period of spiritual dedication. There are so many other spiritual exercises in which Muslims engage, the tafsiir (exegesis of the Qur’an) session, the taraawih (late evening supererogatory prayers) and nawaafil (night supererogatory prayers). Only the deep can call to the deep. All these cannot be possible in the NYSC camp.”the statement read

I am a Catholic and i went to camp during lent in March 2007. My own fasting is even more serious as there is no early morning food. We also observed our stations of the Cross prayers as we adjusted the time a little. Instead of doing it at 5pm, we shifted it to 6:30pm as God can hear us anytime of the day. We did not say camp should be cancelled because we were fasting and praying. The God in whose name we were fasting gave us the strength to carry on and I personally participated in the Parade on the day our camp was over and never felt any week. Its a matter of determination and u shall all do it.

It is a spiritual exercise that benefits the adherent. You mentioned soldiers who are equally engaged in daily rigorous physical exercises all round the year and I am sure you have a good number of Muslims among them and indeed, the entire Military Defense Authority. This NYSC started in 1973 and I cannot therefore understand the present hue and cry if not for mischief. We currently have enough troubles in our hand; let us minimize or extinguish as much as possible.

Islam exempts people from fasting during difficult situations so Muslim corpers should be able to exempt themselves from fasting and then carry out the fasting when done with orientation camp.

How is it a fast if you fill ur belle with food at dawn and in the evening. I eat once a day and I don't call it a fast. Christians have gone to camp during lent and fasting during lent is total.. There is no dawn banquet. NYSC can be deferred if you are going to let it religion stop you from going now by all means sit in ur mosques all day and let other people who are willing go for service.

God will so bless you for this comment. Even in high school during their Ramadan the school makes special food for them when they want to break their fast.. but during lent food was at regular hours so you miss food and that's it.. did we complain amidst the rigorous labor

It's because our stupid govt listens to them. What do u think after he extended holiday because of mon. Now it's NYSC. Next Schools will start closing anytime they have major events. But if the Muslim has an international exam He or she would go for the exam o. Regardless of Ramadan. It's only in Nigeria that shit happens. GO to UK or US and tell them u can't do follow their schedule dates because of Ramadan and see if your sorry ass won't be kicked out
