Is this not torture? (photo)

Unfortunately, some African mothers still force feed their children this way. This practice - I think - needs to be phased out.

O ye civilised women,, how do u even know if u were fed like that ? Most babies do not like to eat during the weaning period and after. Mothers get ridicūled for having a malnourished baby, what do expect her to do. Children actually die from malnourishment and the mother gets the blame. I have known this method since I was young and have never heard of any death it. Born ur own and nurture make we see...

Please tell them...Irabo is not yoruba o. If a mother doesn't love you, would she care whether you eat or not ?

God bless you, b4 u r a parent u can say some many things but when reality hits you, you realise its not all fun and games. My daughter didn't eat for close to 36 hours, not that she was sick or anything; she just didn't want food ( she would rather take breast milk, which wasn't helping her at 1year plus) i had to resort to force feeding, after doing it twice as soon as i brought the spoon close to her she would open her mouth quick quick.

As a medical student I want to point out the flaws of this practice. This can cause terrible asphyxia(choking) and aspiration to the lungs and it can lead to instantaneous death.there has to be a way of cajoling the child to eat without forcing him

Bunny pj pap is pure starch.shikena.processed basic carbohydrates you use little amount den hot water swells" it up nd u feel cool dat ur baby is being fed wt a spoon of starch and bowl of water.even before d baby is fed d useless pap is further diluted with water to make it runny.......lord I can't deal.my mum who's a nutritionist will say gv him 3 balls of fufu instead cod dats d same thing

It's scary. What if the baby chokes? Or drinks through the nose.

Pls there are better ways to get a child to eat. I have two children and they hate food. I find what they like and feed them that. Or trick them into eating by making the food look like something else. I'll never try this method. Its too barbaric

Unknown said...

Exactly

This style is for lazy people who don't want to take out time to find out what their baby likes to eat, but shove whatever down their throat. I get frustrated when my children refuse to eat, and I am always trying new things until I find the one they like. I won't suffer for 9 months and then choke my baby to death all in the name of feeding

Linda it's unfair of u 2 judge mothers dis way, some children don't eat and the mother has 2do dis not bcos she likes it but just 4 d child's interest.

Oh, the gift of hindsight and better education...
Force-feeding actually puts the child/person at a huge risk of aspirating the food into their lungs and risk of aspiration pneumonia which can kill.
When a child refuses to eat, there could be various reasons for it, and unfortunately, kids may not be able to tell us their symptoms or effectively articulate what the problem is. For example their throat may be very sore or painful and therefore it is painful to swallow and they won't want to eat or drink which leads to dehydration/malnutrition too.
Hence, instead of just ignoring the fact that they just don't want to eat, sometimes, we can just even simply visually try to LOOK at the back of their throat and we may be shocked to find some signs and symptoms like redness, swelling, discharges and even RASHES(from hand, foot & mouth disease) all these and then some other things like if a child has an ear infection too may make them not really want to eat and all of these need to be treated. They also need to be gently hydrated and not trying to force anything down anyone's throat that may go into their lungs and give them aspiration pneumonia which might be deadly especially if untreated.

Also, if the pikin no get any illness or symptoms, and the food no sweet, then the mama fit try make the food sweet small, abeg add more sugar, or change to custard instead of akamu. I never ate akamu, all my siblings and family did, I could never eat it, though I love Eko/agidi with okro soup, but for some reason, I could never take akamu, but I could take custard any day.

This is disgusting, totally unhygienic and unacceptable. Must be a Yoruba mother and her child. Yoruba are dirty, see how she is using her dirty hands to feed the child
