How South African Immigration officials hate on Nigerians...

A travel agent narrates how her client was disrespected, illegally held in a cell and deported from South Africa after arriving the country yesterday April 18th...because according to SA immigration, the man hadn't paid for his hotel reservation. And we've all heard the stories of how Nigerians and their businesses are attacked in the country. What is going on? Read what she wrote below...
"One of my biggest clients, Michael Olusegun Osatuyi decided to spend a weekend break during the Easter period in South Africa to get away from the stress of his job for a while.
"He purchased a South African Airways Business Class ticket worth over N500,000 for this purpose and proceeded to set out on Thursday, April 17th 2014. As with all trips abroad he had previously made, he made a hotel reservation via booking.com. When he arrived the Lagos airport, he was informed he could not board the flight unless the reservation had been paid for. This was promptly done on the hotel website, Crowne Plaza Rosebank Johannesburg and the card was pre-authorised after which he was allowed to board the flight.

The first question is: when citizens of other countries travel to South Africa, are they forced to pay for their stay before they arrive the hotel premises? Are they denied boarding even when they have confirmed reservations booked with their debit/credit card details? In spite of this, Mr. Osatuyi paid and boarded.

When he arrived Johannesburg at 5.00am South African time on Friday, the 18th, the immigration officer called the hotel and reached a member of staff that saw the cancelled booking.com reservation and said the reservation had not been paid for.

My client promptly called me and I in turn called Crowne Plaza and spoke to a professional gentleman called Mondli who sent me the proof of payment and a copy of the reservation. I sent them to Mr. Osatuyi, who by this time had his phones seized from him by the immigration officials and locked up in a common cell with the key taken away like a criminal!!!

When I could no longer reach Mr. Osatuyi, I called various numbers of the South African immigration until I reached the woman in charge of the case. To say she was hostile would be an understatement. She refused to give her name but she picked up the phone number +27115718734 four times between the hours of 7:14 and 8:20 South African time so she can easily be traced. I explained that the hotel employee she spoke to had referred to the booking.com reservation and that she should call the hotel again to confirm that there was indeed proof of payment. She insisted that she can only call any hotel once after which I asked the Hotel Manager to call her which he did. He later informed me that she was extremely hostile and said she had taken a decision that could not be reversed and that Mr. Osatuyi had been assigned to leave with the next flight back to Lagos at 2:00pm.

Mr. Osatuyi was denied access to his phones, a lawyer and consular staff throughout his stay in that cell. He had a business class ticket but was denied access to the business lounge at the airport until he boarded the flight.

This situation, in my opinion is completely unacceptable! Even in more advanced countries like the United States and United Kingdom, passengers are granted the right of access and hotel reservations are paid for on arrival at the hotel.

Why are Nigerians treated like trash in South Africa? Mr. Osatuyi deserves an unreserved apology from the South African government because it is a slap on the citizenry of this country and we find it unacceptable that a hard working person like himself would be treated as a criminal charged with an offence.

I also believe that if this trend continues, we should be reciprocal in our attitude towards South African citizens when they arrive our shores. Full payment of hotel accommodation must be made before they board flights to our esteemed country.

Enough is enough! Justice must be served.
Sincerely
Adebisi Adegbite Kuforiji

Lots if Nigerians provide false information on their visa applications and overstay their visas, not only in SA, but also in Europe, America and Asia. That is why immigration officials are so strict when checking Nigerian travelers. Sometimes this means genuine, respectable travelers suffer unnecessarily. However such cases are the exception, not the norm.

Bullshit right?! Anyways, you really do not need to blame those officials after much sham and charlatanry fairy tales that have escalated over the years about Nigerians. I want to believe this doesn't happen to everyone in/planning to be in SA. Plenty sorry Sir and Ma.

Oh Jehova! This was totally uncalled for. I'm a South African and had travelled to Nigeria more than 5 times without any unnecessary harassment. The citezens always being nice and welcoming to the foreigners, immigration staff also very helpful.
I dont know what to say, just so sorry for the person.

That is really not fair. I think the same should be done to South African citizens prior arrival to our country. that way they can feel the slap we get from them too. And the Victim(Mr Osa..) should sue them for inconveniences.

The real question is why do Nigerians insist on going to South Africa where they get humiliated, and then disturb our peace with their stories. If you are looking for sympathy or government action, forget it. Go somewhere else, or keep your troubles to yourselves.

This aint the first time such a report will be made. Even Nigerians residing in S/A are no exception to this racial misnomer. Even if Naija has been dubbed to be a bad and corrupt nation, I don't think the attribute should be generalized to all of her citizens. Every nation on earth has her own share of 'bad eggs'. The difference is in the nature and number of such eggs. Enough is indeed enough. I wish the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs will take up this case on behalf of the Federal Government and the gentleman!

Yeah truly the South African immigration officers are very hostile to Nigerians, because of the shady dealings of Nigerians here in South Africa, especially in Johannesburg to be precise, but with respect to this guys case, i will say that story is not true, because i live here in South Africa, Sandton to be precise, the South Africa immigration will never allow you access into their country without any reservation, but they don't go as far as confirming the reservation, and if you happen not to have booked for a hotel reservation, they will refer you to a section at the OR Tambo airport to do your booking and they will allow access to the country, so they should tell us what really transpired with the immigration officer.

Secondly, all countries are tired of Nigerians everywhere in the world, these my fellow country people are messing up, Nigerians will sleep with their women, get them pregnant, even so go as far as stealing from these South African women and run back to Nigeria, some Nigerians come here lie all kinds of lies to their women just to sleep with them, some Nigerians will deny not having a family in Nigeria (not being married) and after some while the women find out and gets heart-broken and angry, they report all these to their Home Affairs.

Thirdly, some Nigerians are here trading drugs as if they are hawking gala on lekki-ajah traffic, in South Africa, Nigerians trade cocaine and heroine as if its not a crime, something they cannot do in Nigeria, Linda come to South Africa, come to areas like Midrand, Sandton, Hillbrow, Alexandra, etc. ruining the lives of their kids, funny enough other countries are there who trade drugs too, like the Indians, Pakistans, Zims, Mozambiques, but they will not make it a thing of show, but Nigerians have abused the trade of drugs in South Africa.

Fourthly, what about the Yahoo boys in South Africa, especially the ones that relocated from Malaysia to South Africa, sleeping with all the Zulu, Sotho, Cosa etc women, giving them money, and in South Africa is against their culture sleeping with a woman and giving her money for sex, it makes you a makosha (prostitute), now because of this Nigerian mentality, this women are no more loyal to their men and its ruining there homes and marriages and these men are angry, if any opportunity present itself for them to revenge on Nigerians they gladly do it.

Again on the Yahoo boys who are busy sending a scam lottery messages to the South African citizens, that they have won lottery, they have to send airtime of R500 and then request for huge amount of money from them after, this is making the citizens feel bad, because Ghanians are there, other African countries are there, but they dont do all this evil on them, they got freedom from the whites and colour to now suffer another slavery from Nigerians, Linda if na you, you go gree.

Sad thing is Nigeria was at the forefront of the fight against apartheid when leaders of countries like the US and UK turned a blind eye to say the least. Yet British and Americans are treated better. That's life for you. I know Nigerians too can often be badly misbehaved but still...

in a serious country you would trust your government to have your back but sadly that isn't the case. Even more galling is the fact that many south African companies befit from Nigeria's economy.

Anonymous said...

Obviously this kind of behaviour is wrong. But have you been to the airport in Nigeria?? Have you studied the way the Nigerian staff treat Nigerians?? If we can't respect our own citizen in our own country, how do you expect South Africans to respect us? South Africans are probably reciprocating the way they've been treated when they visited Nigeria.

As much as I sympathize with d passenger, y'all r to blame as well. Not just d south Africans. Plus I need to state respectfully that you r chatting shit here. For instance, for UK, if you claim you r going to stay in a hotel and d immigration officer finds out you cancelled your booking, you will be returned to Nigeria. Pls ask. If Ppl with those experiences will agree to tell you they were returned. How do you travel without a hotel booking? Whose burden do you wanna be? I mean, if you r staying with someone, cool but if you claim to have a booking? Why not have it? Or why book and cancel? Or use a card that will be declined? That in itself is fishy. And if course if they wanna return you to your country of origin, you have to be kept under watchful eyes. Don't expect a lounge. Come on, you r bring held for suspicious circumstances. Pity this passenger was allegedly treated like a criminal. But Pls earn respect. Don't only demand it. Book AND PAY for your hotel even if for a day. Like d UK and America which you mentioned, you r expected to pay for d hotel before traveling. Booking isn't enough. D only reason one will be allowed in is if those officials r not aware you haven't paid. Of course each case is unique and nothing is in black and white . We Nigerians arouse suspicion just by being Nigerians. Not to mention when d story doesn't gel.

He should have been allowed a lawyer though. Or at least to call someone that could get one for him. Lucky though they found a naija flight immediately else he woulda lasted longer there. Let him take legal action or appeal or something. Write and copy everyone. And don't be quoting "facts" without verifying them. Like those countries you mentioned. You go just floor your case! Then maybe we can hear their side too.
One more? But he has money, why didn't he just pay for d booking? Just asking

I believe they treat Nigerians that way because of the high number of Nigerians Migrating illegally into S.A. However, those South African immigration officers are very impolite. I visited South Africa in February, and was not required to show a prove of hotel Reservation. Maybe, I was exempted because am an American citizen.

I really don't understand why these bloody south Africans hate on Nigerians. You would recall the issue of the Nigerian that was told to vacate his seat for a southie aboard their airline. It's rather crazy but do u blame them? Our foreign affairs minister has not done a thing to show that their hostile behaviours will be condoned. If he has gone to that thieving DSTV and deported all the southie in their employ, we would have heard the end of this! Instead of our leaders to protect us, they are more concerned by their future ala 2015. Sorry o Mr. Osatuyi, next time go to the Ranch Resort Obudu in Cross River. It's a really lovely place to de stress, beautiful weather, lovely ambience and even better it's tiwantiwan!

South Africans are obviously intimidated by the high level of education and success of most Nigerians. They see us as a big competition everywhere. Even in the United Kingdom I sense some hostility from most of them because they feel we are thriving better than they are. Their hostility doesn't end with Nigerians it is often extended to other Africans albeit slightly less and I know a couple of people who've left lucrative jobs in SA for thief safety. Sad thing at the end of the day, their hostility won't be reciprocated when they come to Nigeria.

Most unfair and so out of order! ...but being realistic in the Naija context, we have a seemingly comatose government in a lot of areas including foreign policy and standing in the committee of Nations, the government does not do enough to command or deserve international respect in the sub region of west Africa. How much more Africa? Their spoilt brats' blings are so bright you can see them from Mars!

Ile latin K'esho rode. If you don't value or respect your citizens at home, who will respect them outside?

No doubt the consular folks are too busy doing all else but seeking formal redress from the SA government who know that nothing will come of this.

Your client should probably have gone to DXB!

An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth to all south africans coming to Nigeria. These were people whose youths the Obasanjo government brought into our universities free of charge in the 1970s. I was in the university then and I witnessed Nigeria's kind gesture to South Africa. The government invested a lot in the black south african fight for freedom, including boycotting world sports. Please, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. Fish out all south africans in Nigeria and deal with them too! No single nation has monopoly of violence!

We don't have to wait for 'if it continues' . The west have been tactful in displaying their discrimination towards us. Tha SA authorities think they and their citizenry are better than us but unfortunately have been less tactful with their discrimination which they have been unable to unlearn and have it reserved and meted out in a displaced manner unto Nigerians from a psychological standpoint. This is fine. There should be an international trial and the immigration official made an example

South African are so jealous of Nigerians, they can't even help themselves anymore. Shame on them. They may hate all they want, but we Nigerians are bigger and better and will always be. They can die, die, die if they can't accept that reality. We don't need to travel to SA anyways. With all the stories I hear about how Nigerians are treated there, I always wonder why I will go and spend my hard earned money there to improve their economy. Left to me, Nigerians should boycott SA. There are a million and one other great places I will rather go for a weekend.

I feel your pain, this is one of the see finish effects occasioned by our lack of value as a people. A country is just like an individual, if you are a thief, a liar, corrupt, greedy or even cowardice as a person people will treat u with scorn. That's why other countries treat us the way they do, their perception of us is lower than you can ever imagine, the only thing they see when they see a Nigerian is a thief, a liar, a corrupt, greedy and stupid person.

We keep hearing of these stories. Yet we do nothing. I had a similar experience at the lagos intl. airport where Arik officials forced me to pay a fraudulent 100 dollars for accommodation b4 they would check me in. D fact that I already had a confirmed hotel accommodation paid for in johanesburg did not matter to them at all. Why would someone who has met all the requirements to be granted an SA visa, still have to go thru so much just to go and spend their holiday in SA. I say let the south Africans begin to fill d pinch of their own policies . Let them feel what it's like to be humiliated!

Anonymous said...

Thank you. Enough is enough. It's high time we stopped tolerating this South Africa's complex attitude to and disdainful treatment of Nigerians. A substantial percentage of SA's economy runs on Nigeria's investment. DStv thrives in Nigeria, making all the money, but how may Nigerian companies will be allowed such a respected business environment to operate in SA? SA remain the only country in Africa that openly treats Nollywood films with disdain in Africa. Maybe, it's also time Nigerians started pulling out their investments from that country if they do not treat us with respect. But then again, we have ourselves to blame because we would have less need for SA and all things SA if we did not destroy Nigeria with our own hands.

Nigerian and Nigerian businesses have suffered untold discrimination in South Africa and their Government has not showed any seriousness to address this situation.

We must demand that MTN and DSTV leave Nigeria forthwith as a show of our reservation on the treatment of Nigeria and Nigerins. We will later look at other South African interests in Nigeria.

The agent has probably not told the full story. He probably asked the agent to cancel the new booking once he boarded and when wahala started in SA, the agent quickly did another one.
My sister in-law was prevented from boarding for the Uk recently on account of this same hotel reservation matter. You know we overdo stuff. What has happened is that most of the countries are fed up of us filling visa applications saying we are going to be staying in the hotel only to cancel the booking once we get the visa. At the entry ports they have now found that upon secondary inspection when our people arrive, they will find a hotel booking no longer exist whereas there was one during the application. Careful, cos there is enough blame to go around.

This is really sad and I'm beginning to believe the South African government is doing a fast one on Nigerians to raise revenue that is never refunded if one is not allowed entry into their country.
I have lost money to that country which I can never recover in similar circumstances and I never went and the hotel never refunded my money. South Africans are criminals who are lazy and are drunks who feel they can always cheat on us and have nothing to offer. MTN and their likes should be punished in the same manner and I bet they will immediately stop this criminal behavior.
