"Picture is blurry but this was killed in my estate on Saturday. A big portion of land is being cleared behind my estate so I hear there are a lot of creepy crawlies around. Please never let kids play outside unsupervised! I just thank God my kids were in doors. Sigh.

Linda its very common in Lekki. From Chevy View, down to Bakare Estate 1 and 2 till Northern foreshore. This stuff are very common including land crabs.

That's a Komodo dragon, a specie of monitor lizard.
It's definitely a monitor lizard, very common around water. They are born tiny as lizards and can grow to be as long as mature alligators/crocrodiles. They have forked tongues like snakes and they are carnivorous animals that cannot be tamed. They bite and tail whip. Their bite may not be exactly fatal but very bad as they pass bacteria and venom that does not allow blood to clot. If quick medical intervention is not sought, it may end up being fatal. You want to be very careful around them. And the big ones can run very fast, fast than human beings so take note. A look alike a Komodo dragon, it's saliva causes paralysis on its prey so it can devour it.
A Monitor Lizard is NOT closely related to Alligators.and it's totaly harmless to humans(even to Kids), in fact it will runaway if it comes across any child.nobody knows it all so we learn every day intrespective of our age or educational background.its also important to note that we should stop killing just about anything we see in this country all in the name of fear or "bush meat",acts like these are considered a crime in other countries and will usually carry a huge fine or time in Prison

The monitor lizard is likely to scurry off when it sees people but it's an animal and cannot be predictable. You or your kids don't want to be careless around them. They bite very hard and it's not pleasant.
I saw 2 of it behind my house I ran for my dear life. Can even withstand common lizard not 2 talk of. And my security was busy chasing them. Eventually caught dem and ate. Yuck!!! Hell no
