Nigerian President or King of the North? by Femi Fani Kayode

As written by Femi Fani Kayode
"In 418 B.C. Herodotus, the Greek philosopher who is known as the ‘’father of history’’, said "a man who does not know anything about the events that took place before he or she was born will remain forever a child.’’ Not only was he right but one must go a step further by saying that those who refuse to learn from their history are condemned to repeating its mistakes.
In 1957, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Saurdana of Sokoto and the Premier of the North, said the following: "We the people of the north will continue our stated intention to conquer the south and to dip the koran in the Atlantic ocean after the British leave our shores."
Three years later, on 12 th October 1960, he went a step further by saying the following words to the Parrot Newspaper: “The new nation called Nigeria should be an estate of our great grandfather Uthman Dan Fodio. We must ruthlessly prevent a change of power. We must use the minorities in the North as willing tools and the South as a conquered territory and never allow them to rule over us and never allow them to have control over their future”.

That same year he said:  "I will allow Sir Tafawa Balewa to go and become Prime Minister and lead the unbelievers of the south whilst I will stay in the north and lead the faithful".

One year later, in a television interview with the BBC (which can still be viewed on Youtube) he was asked whether his ''northernisation policy'' would be a temporary or permanent feature. His response was as follows. ''In actual fact the policy is a northerner first. If you cannot get a northerner then you get an expatriate like yourself on contract. If we cannot get that then we will employ another Nigerian from the south on contract too. This is going to be a permanent policy as far as I forsee''.

Not to be outdone, in January 1947 on the floor of the Northern House of Assembly, Sir Tafawa Balewa, a man that was to become the first Prime Minister of Nigeria 13 years later, said the following words:

“We do not want our Southern neighbours to interfere in our development. We have never associated ourselves with the activities of these people. We do not know them, we do not recognise them, and we share no responsibility in their actions. We shall demand our rights when the time is ripe. If the British quit Nigeria now at this stage, the Northern people would continue their uninterrupted conquest to the sea”.

The passion for the total domination of the Nigerian state by the north has not in any way diminished over the years. As a matter of fact it appears to have become even more pronounced and, for some,  it has become an obsession.  Consider the following.

On 2nd October 2014, one Aliyu Gwarzo said the following to Pointblanknews:

”When I say that the Presidency must come to the north next year I am referring to the Hausa-Fulani core north and not any northern christian or minority tribe. The Christians in the north are nothing and the minorities know that when we are talking about leadership in the north and in Nigeria, Allah has given it to us, the Hausa-Fulani. They owe us everything. This is because we gave them Islam through the great Jihad waged by Sheik Usman Dan Fodio. We liberated all these places and all these people by imposing islam on them by force. It was either the Koran or the sword and most of them chose the Koran. In return for the good works of our forefathers Allah, through the British, gave us Nigeria to rule and to do with as we please. Since 1960 we have been doing that and we intend to continue. No Goodluck or anyone else will stop us from taking back our power next year. We will kill, maim, destroy and turn this country into Africa’s biggest war zone and refugee camp if they try it. Many say we are behind Boko Haram. My answer is what do you expect? We do not have economic power or intellectual power. All we have is political power and they want to take even that from us. If they don’t want an ISIS in Nigeria then they must give us back the Presidency and our political power. Their soldiers are killing our warriors and our people every day but mark this: even if it takes one hundred years we will have our revenge. Every Fulani man that they kill is a debt that will be repaid even if it takes 100 years. The Fulani have very long memories”.

The full text of Gwarzo's contribution can be read on Pointblanknews or elsewhere. His words are self-explanatory and they need no further analysis. Thankfully his views do not represent the thinking of the majority of Hausa Fulani people but he does speak for a dangerous and vocal minority and his words constitute a clear statement of intent. Simply put, it is his desire to conquer and subjugate southern Nigeria and to restore northern domination and supremacy in the affairs of our nation in perpetuity.

The quest for northern domination in the affairs of our country is as old as the hills. It led to a brutal civil war between 1967 and 1970 in which millions were killed. It led to pogrom after pogrom and slaughter after slaughter in the north. It led to a series of military coups and counter coups. In 1991 it led to a coup by Major Gideon Orkar which, if it had been successful, would have resulted in the excision of the core northern states from our country. It led to the annulement of Chief MKO Abiola’s presidential election of June 12th 1993 which almost resulted in a second civil war.

It led to the brutal suppression of the south by General Sani Abacha and the murder, torture, incarceration and exile of many southern leaders. It led to stiff opposition to the government of President Olusegun Obasanjo in the north which came in the guise ''political sharia''.  And finally it led to it’s most barbaric and hideous expression in the relentless opposition to the regime  of President Goodluck Jonathan which came in the form of Boko Haram.

Judging from recent events, with President Buhari now in power it appears that those that have been lusting for total northern domination for the last 55 years have finally had their way.

The inability to think deeply or profoundly is a curse. The inability to read widely and learn from others is a pitiful and costly affliction. If there were ever a time for profound thinking and deep and sober reflection when it comes to the affairs of our nation it is now. I say this because only three months after President Buhari has been sworn into office the power configuration, vis a vis north and south,  has resulted in the following mess.

1. President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria - north. 2.Senate President- north. 3. Speaker of the House of Representatives- north. 4. Chief Justice of the Federation- north. 5. President of the Court of Appeal- north. 6. Chief Justice of the Federal High Court- north. 7. Secretary to the Federal Government- north. 8. Chief of Staff to the President- north. 9. Chief of Army Staff- north. 10. Chief of Air Staff- north. 11. Comptroller General of Customs- north. 12. Director-General of State Security Services (SSS)- north. 13. National Security Advisor- north. 14. Director General NIMASA- north. 15. Chairperson of the Independant Electoral Commission (INEC)- north. 16. Comptroller-General Immigration- north. 17. Accountant-General of the Federation - north. 18. Commander of Civil Defence Corps- north. 19. Chief Security Officer to the President- north. 20. ADC to the President- north. 21. Principal Secretary to the President- north. 22. Senior Special Assistant to the President on media- north. 23. Chairman of the EFCC- north. 24. MD Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA)- north. 25. Head of Service north. 26. DG National Communication Commission (NCC)- north. 27. Chairman NDLEA- north. 28. CEO AMCON- north.

.

There is no gainsaying that this is unacceptable. Some of us warned that this would happen but we were insulted and lampooned for doing so. These appointments are not only lopsided but they are also a manifestation of the fact that in just three months southern Nigeria has finally been relegated to being little more than an occupied region and a vassal state. The people of the south appear to have been placed in servitude and bondage. Our chains may be invisible but they are very much there.

The question must be asked: is Buhari the President of Nigeria or is he the King of the north? Some have argued that the federal character formula has no place in our affairs anymore and that merit ought to be the only criteria for government appointments.  Permit me to qoute a young man from twitter who responded to that absurd logic rather well by saying ‘’if federal character isn't important, why is the Vice President also not from Daura? Educated people should not speak like illiterates’’.

Others have said that we should wait for the ministerial list and that after that things would balance out. Again this is absurd logic and those that spout such convoluted thrash appear to have forgotten the fact that the President is compelled by law and the constitution to appoint a Minister from every state of the federation, including each of the southern states.

Whether he is President of Nigeria or King of the north Buhari would do well to retrace his steps. The consequences of not doing so for both his government and the unity of our country will be grave and costly.  The south cannot be subjugated and treated with contempt and the people of the south will never be slaves. Fairness and equity in the distribution of national resources and key government appointments are a fundamental pre-requisite for peace, security and national unity in our country.

It has served our collective interest well for many years. Those that seek to upset the applecart and jettison it today are not considering the inevitable and monumental consequences of their actions. Power may have returned to the north but the people of the south must be treated with respect, sensitivity, dignity, fairness and decency. Those that refuse to accept this counsel and that insist on charting a different course do so at their own peril.

FFK just wants to stay relevant that's his problem. If he is offered an appointment now, u will see the true nature of the guy. We're we not in this same Nija when he said Jonathan should go and beg Buhari, IBB, Obasanjo and co for forgiveness for messing up the country? After giving him an appointment what did he do? A complete 360. He did the same to OBJ and after an appointment he kept mute. Ignore this chap for the sake of our country. It doesn't matter who PMB appoints, let them do the job. That's what matters. I rest my case

Adebayo, do you know the difference between appointments and elected positions? FFK is talking about Buhari's appointments and not the ones that were elected like the deputy senate president/deputy speaker. Okay ?

All these position u mention are compulsery by d constitution to appoint ppl frm d different regions for example d president and d vice can't come from north

If our foolish brothers and sisters were not corrupt and criminal minded, their dreams would not be achieved, so please sir take ur article to them and not to the public, becus it's late and I don't care if north rules all, as far as it gives us a better Nigerian and the youths good jobs. Yes we the youth remain children for not knowing our history but the elders are big time failures for not building a nation and a better future

MY BROTHER AND SISTER, MY LOVELY COUNTRY NIGERIA IS UNDER ATTACK I NEVER SUPPORT BUHARI IN THE FIRST PLACE. GEJ MESS UP BIG TIME NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT. BUT ALLOWING BUHARI TO RULE US THE SECOND TIME IS A TOTAL DISGRACE TO ALL NIGERIANS. WE WANT CHANGE, WELL THE CHANGE HAS FINALLY COMES. I AM NOT SORRY TO SAY THIS SOUTHERNERS ARE BASELESS PEOPLE AND THEY ARE TOO FEARFUL. THE ONLY TRIBLE THAT THE NORTHERNERS FEAR IS THE IGBOS, BECAUSE WE HAVE SHOWN THEN WAR IF NOT FOR THE SOUTHERNERS WHO FORSAKE US AND DIVERT OUR RESOURCE WHEN WE NEEDED THEM THE MOST, THAT IS WHY THEY ARE RUNNING HEADLESS WHEN IN THE PREVIOUS ELECTION BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO SAY IN THEIR OWN LAND. IN FACT LINDA PLEASE POST THIS WE IGBOS WE OWN NIGERIA. YES WE OWN THIS COUNTRY. IN FACT I HAVE DONE MY RESEARCH WITH SOME COUNTRIES WHERE NIGERIA LANGUAGE ARE BEEN USE. SENEGAL THEY SPEAK HUSA, SOME PART IN BARBADOS SPEAKS YORUBA..ETC. IT'S ONLY IN NIGERIA THAT IGBO LANGUAGE IS USE AS A MEAN OF COMMUNICATE YET IGBOS ARE THE MOST TRAVELLERS WE HAVE IN NIGERIA. WE OWN THE COUNTRY BUT YORUBA WITH THEIR FEARFUL AND DUBIOUS WAY OF DEALING THEY ARE NOT UNITED IN ANYWAY BUT A CULTURE AND SELF BACKBITERS WHO THINGS THEY ARE MORE EDUCATED IN THE COUNTRY BUT THEY ARE BUNCH OF FOOLS AND LOW LIFE. IMAGINE THEIR OBA WITH HIS SILLY COMMENT ( igbos will have to leave if they did not vote for buhari ) SABI UNA WANT CHANGE, MAKE BUHARI DEY CHANGE UNA DEY GO. AS FOR ME IF BUHARI WANT TO PUT HIS OWN GENERATION IN HIS ADMINISTRATION I REALLY DONT CARE, LET HIM WAKE HIS LATE PARENTS AND HIS FOREFATHERS UP FROM THE GRAVE AND GIVE THEM POST IN HIS ADMINISTRATION I STILL I DONT CARE AS LONG AS HE DOES HIS JOB AND LEAVE THE OFFICE. NIGERIANS, MAYBE THIS WILL BE A GREAT LEASON FOR YOU ALL, AND NEXT TIME YOU ARE CHANTING CHANGE YOU SHOULD THINK DEEP AND BE WISE TO CHOOSE SOMEONE LIKE A MALLAM, OR LET US TAKE ACTION NOW. I AM VERY SURE YORUBA PEOPLE ARE DYING RIGHT NOW. LINDA TAKE NOT OR I WILL SHUTDOWN YOUR BLOG FOR 2 WEEKS.

Read and be enlightened. The reason why Buhari has not announced the ministerial list is that left to him he would have put all his mallams there, but because he is compelled by law, he can't. The highest thing he can do is delay it for as long as he wants .Baba nama.

This is revealing. I think the Igbos saw this coming in 1967 hence d civil war....
May God help us all.

Anonymous said...

First of all, let everyone open their minds and do proper research on the civil war.

The civil war came out from the naivety of several leaders, young and old in the leadership of a gathering of strange bedfellows, with diverse agendas. A fight against corruption, had a stroke of ill luck. The arresters did not manage the situation and created justification for the same tribalistic brouhaha that has continued to live till this date.

Like FFK said, the thought process of devils of Sarduana, which was sheepishly resounded by a naive Tafawa Balewa who did not know the crown he then wore, continues to haunt this nation till date.

If one reads about Nigeria pre-independence, pre-amalgamation, one will understand why the Northerners held themselves with such arrogance. The Fulani empire was young (barely 300 years). They had ravaged the Yoruba empire who continued to push back (that's why Ilorin and Kogi are the way they are). Then colonization came. They were united and easy to manage for the british, with established trade routes, hegemony that made them easy to relate with. This was unlike the smaller kingdoms of the south south and the kingdoms of Yorubaland and Iboland who were not so united.

To make matters worse, they were the cash cows, prosperous in Agriculture. Dangote's grandfather (Dantata) was the richest man in Nigeria from storing farm produce and making a market for them. In retrospect, they were the today's south south. Unity made it easier for them to fight for more representation and control in the affairs of a budding nation. It is that arrogance that led to so many other things.

My points do not alter some of the things FFK mentioned, but it gives an understanding of the roots of our problem.

We think that because one part of the country has certain resources, they must rule. If not, we cry foul. That is really foolish. Those who control resources are enterpreneurs. The government collects taxes and shares with civil servants. How many of you have had a civil servant walk to his house and give him food to eat? None!!!

What we as people need from the government is an enabling environment to pursue our dreams, our happiness. Enabling environment to do our business and work and live and grow and build. They need to build infrastructure not dash our snubbish uncles promotions.

Until we learn that all these ramblings is for the mere 0.1% (160,000) to continue to corner resources, we the 99.90% will continue to kill ourselves for nothing.

Boko Haram never chop. OPC still dey do vigilante. Bakassi boys dey do jazz up and down. We dey here dey fool ourselves, while FFK, Obasanjo, Ibori, Alameiseigha etc.. dey ball, deir pikin, baby mama dey ball..

A WORD IS ENOUGH FOR THE WISE

SHALLA

I seriously recommend a good dose of Nigerian history to people like Bonario Nnaggs who seem to have dropped from the sky. FFK wrote real history and should be commended for his candour. But we must go further than his article. As for the Igbos, we said these things some forty eight years ago: "On Aburi we stand!"

Oloriburuku ni ffk yi o. If u disagree wt buharis appointmets just say so, compare wt past democratic govts & come up wt sensible solutns. What is all these NONSENSE PROPAGANDA just so sw can vote PDP in d next election. Now i truly know this idiot is a big fool. So we shld all start screaming like headless chickens after dis incitement to violence. FFK we are not foolish nor do we come to unreasonable conclusions like u just did here. And pls sardauna has bn dead for over 50yrs.

FFK for ur information: Since democracy in 1999, weve had 8yrs of a xtian southerner, then 2yrs of a muslim northerner, then 6yrs of a xtian southerner & now JUST 3 MONTHS of a muslim northerner who has just started naming appointments & ur crying. When jonathan was naming southerners everywhere who cried. Pls consider ur audience when ur tempted to talk like a 5yr old.

PS- d military regime means nothing. During d civil war all igbos left d military to join biafra, most of d pple in there 80% were hausas & very few of other ethnicities. And d hausas didnt even like themselves; they couped & toppled each other till Abacha.

Yorubas SPEAK UP when they are aggrieved (reason they rioted & were jailed & kept at it throughout d military era till we got our democracy). These were d same reasons IBB resigned & handed over 2 a yoruba man. D way fani kayode has d balls to diss buhari is d same way lai mohammed & co had d balls to diss jonathan. FFK and Fayose, no matter the demonization shows the facts. The truth can not be hidden. The eyes of millions of Nigerians have been open. The Era when politicians play us 419 is over. FKK or not, it honestly doesn't change the fact that this is the truth. My parents have lived in sokoto before and these are the things they say and teach their people from a very tender age. It's not about who is saying it whether it's FKK or osibanjo it's the fact the this is the truth Nigerians have to face now, as evidenced by his appointments.

Most of the people who are commenting on this article in support of Buhari are youths who do not know history and they are too blind to see. The reality will dawn on them in another 8 to 10years because they have refused to realize that they are still slaves to the north they have not faced segregation, oppression in a northern dominated Nigeria where they seek employment and where the federal character principle is dead and they are marginalized, where 85% of the oil blocks belong to northerners, while the crude oil is found in the south south shame on this so called youths commenting blindly on this article. The unholy aliance of the country called Nigeria, the people of southern nigeria and northern Nigeria are completely different both in culture and lifestyle including religion. When the north desperately needed power they used some willing traitors in the yoruba race to acheive their 2015 agenda? One day like in the bible the northern pharoah wil let my people go. Perhaps Ojukwu was right at the time we should have shared Nigeria long ago this slavery can not continue.

"The illiterates of the 21st century won't be the ones that have not gone to school, but those who cannot unlearn and relearn"-Anonymous

I can almost assure that 75% of the contributors on this blog are below age 45. if we are "youths", why don't we think constructively? That we have freedom of speech or free access to social media platforms should not rob us of our reasoning. The older generations have failed us, why must we fail ourselves and the generations coming behind us. So much thoughtlessness in our speeches is "sickening". Whatever your view of FFK's personality, try, no matter how difficult it might be for you, to "listen"...we talk too much, hear too much, but don't listen enough.

If you have not, please make friends with the so called "core" northerners and you will understand. People, stop being naive, history is so replete with affirmations of what FFK is trying to communicate. I am not a fan of his, and I have strong reservations for his person, but trust me on this, he knows exactly what he thinks he is perceiving.

GEJ was not prepared for leadership, at least, for Nigeria. The gross misconducts and mistakes of his aides made room for the emergence of APC. If there is one thing to note for sure, so many of the APC leaders do not have the credibility to lead us. If you look through out Nigeria's history, anytime a "Northerner" is not in power, they make all sorts of "trouble", sometimes even to their own detriment.

If you are a southerner, please wake up!! I do not subscribe to violence or armed struggle, but make sure to be the best you can be in whatever you do...and while you are at the "one Nigeria" mantra, make sure to contribute to the development of your village, local government, state, geopolitical zone, etc. To bring it home some more, with all the wealth some Ibos flaunt and claim to have, I wonder why the various manufacturing hubs in the south east are moribund. Invest in them and bring them up to speed...until you become economically independent as a region, others will mess around with you. While Ipkeazu called on industrialists from that region to invest more at home, I think he was just stating what every sensible adult should have figured by now. Do everything you can, and like the Chinese and their other neighbours, become self reliant. I am not Ibo, and I am an upwardly mobile person: the last two footwears I bought were actually made in Abia state...if I did not tell you, you would not believe. MY POINT: MAKE SURE TO BE ECONOMICALLY BALANCED WITHIN YOURSELF.

And to all them biased contributors, I have just one question for you:

According to a well published report, about 71% of Nigeria's oil fields are managed by people from a particular region, not even from the Niger Delta...please tell me, in what world would this be justifiable????? And we are still struggling with the PIB...

And while you're thinking up a response, understand that the rules of "understanding" has shifted. Wake up and smell the coffee, times are trully changing.

A wise approach to these thoughts would do a lot of good to any reader...we will all do well...

God bless Nigeria.

FFK is right. The problem that brought Buhari was caused by Jonathan who mis ruled and pushed Yorubas to back ground. No one is a fool in this Project called Nigeria. It is not a do or die affairs, if the project can not work, the components can still be dismantled. We need to be careful and keep our memory alive with history.

Shameless sweet coated lying tongue. FYI I'm a proud Nigerian, who cares what region. So far Nigeria move and grow in the right direction having brought people like you to justice.
