Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and her four children are all Harvard graduates

Some of you say you want inspiring stories, does this pass for one? Lol. OK, so the Minister of Finance Mrs Ngozi Oknonjo Iweala is a graduate of the prestigious Harvard University and so are her four children - Onyinye, Uzodinma, Ikechukwu and Uchechi. (Uzo and Uche pictured above)

Mrs Okonjo-Iweala studied Economics at Harvard, graduating magna cum laude with A.B in 1977.
Her eldest, Onyinye received her Ph.D. in Experimental Pathology from Harvard University in 2008 and graduated Harvard Medical School in 2010. Onyinye is a wife and mother.
Her son, Uzodinma Iweala received his A.B in English and American literature from Harvard and MD from Colombia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is the author of the critically acclaimed novel, Beasts of No Nation (2005).
Her other son, Ikechukwu Iweala studied social studies at Harvard and graduated in 2005.
Her last child Uchechi graduated from Harvard in 2009 and majored in Economics
And don't forget that Mrs Okonjo-Iweala's parents also graduated from Harvard.

Are you inspired? :-)

impressed will be the wrong word. That all her children graduated from Harvard is not an impressive feat per-say. This is because most private schools in America (especially Ivy-Leagues) consider your family affiliations and your ability to pay before they admit you. So if your grandparent(s) and your mother attended Harvard, and you can pay (do not need a scholarship), then you only ave to be decently smart to get it. Its a no-brainer. But if the two premises from the last sentence are false, then you have to be a genius and have wonderful favor from God to get in. So if you ask me, this is nothing impressive and should not necessarily be a source of inspiration.

My father inlaw is a Harvard graduate and most of his children are not even graduates. This is inspiring, maybe my children will make our family proud by following their grandpa's step one day.

Anonymous said...

Yes, very inspiring indeed.

Another inspiring family is David Dafinone and his family of accounts, recognised by the Guiness World Records.

The Certificate reads.

''The World record for the most chartered accounts in one family is held by the three sons and two daughters of Senator David Omueya and Cythia Estella Dafinone of Lagos, Nigeria, who all qualified as members of the Institute of Chartered accounts in England and Wales between 1986 and 1999. Senator Dafinone became a member of the same institution in 1963''.

Brillant!

Anonymous said...

Nope. That by itself is not enough. There needs to be more to the story.

Anonymous said...

I am impressed but Linda remember she is a LEGACY so are her children. If you went to Harvard, your kids will have a greater chance to enter into any IVY league school of their choice. I currently got accepted to Harvard so that means my little brother will go to Harvard so will my kids. Going to Ivy League doesn't necessarily mean that you are smart. Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, owners of Google and Bill Gates never finished school but did you see how great they all turned out to be? They changed the word "TECHNOLOGY" forever. They are the 21st century, they made history and they will still be remembered forever. Oprah never went to any Ivy League school but did you see that she is the wealthiest black woman and most influential woman in the world. Now that is INSPIRING. These people you just mentioned were born with golden and silver spoon, they didn't have to conquer anything. INSPIRATION and SUCCESS according to Oprah is when you work for every dime you own or you have. You don't have to be a Harvard graduate to do that. What have all these people you just mentioned done for Nigeria or Africa aside from Mrs Iweala. I am not hating on Mrs. Iweala as a matter of fact I am a huge fan of hers but I am just asking you why you think they are great. Linda, you are an inspiration to young women out there, you are an independent woman who started from nothing and now you have a blog and you can feed your family and you are successful no matter how little it is. NOW YOU ARE WHAT I CALL INSPIRATION.

Rather they teach them how to steal public funds!. cos am sure they didn't use the money that was made abroad to train them. They used Naija Siphoned money.

Harvard is no beans to attend. Its all about your funds and since her grandparents(affiliation) also went there,so, its an automatic stuff for them and its a no brainer!

I don't think Zaynab is as dumb as you portrayed her, she asked a valid question instigated by your comment. U asked how the story impacts your live but u never ask same on a story about Rihannas body and all other trivial things. It shows a condescending attitude towards knowledge and intelligence and thats a big problem in Nigeria - The value system is so bad that people celebrate trivialities and condemn substance. It's not easy studying in Harvard even if u have money to pay. They must have worked hard to be there.

Anonymous said...

Howard Gardner, aa accomplished educator at Harvard University in his famous book on intelligence theory titled, "Frame of Mind:The Eight Multiple Intelligences" was able to prove that intelligence is not about passing or failing an examination but all about how a person is able to influence his or her society so attending Harvard is not a big deal. It is a big deal if the graduate can use the Harvard degree to change his or her society to be a better place. This is an educational contribution from a US-based Nigerian educator.

Inspiration Ȋ̝̊̅§ wen a child with no parents sponsored him/herself out of university....I'm impressed bt nt inspired...BTW...we've got intelligent people down here without Harvard Cert....that's a family achievement nt ̶̷̩̥̊͡ǎ̜̣̍t d whole country should be reeling over

Linda an inspirational story goes when one succeeds beyond crazy odds! this is more of a legacy and not an inspiration. If her kids didn't go to Harvard then what's the essence of being the second in command of FRN?????? its not inspiration at all. My father finished from uni of Glasgow and we all have attended school in the UK...how inspirational is that?

As a true Igbo son, I don't give a hoot. My 10 containers are coming in from China next month. They can eat their certificates. How that one take concern me?

With all the certificates, she is still under an illiterate, alcoholic President. Havard grad. vs. Otuoke grad? LOL

@Anon 10:57 a man can "went" to university across "nija" to read social studies so he won't have 2 write or speak English like you. #disgraceful# Go back to school child! Meg.

From the dates you posted, they all went to Havard after she had been made a minister. They did not go on scholarship. ASUU is still on strike. Go ahead, inspire me.

In as much Harvard is a great school and we all wish same but honestly this is not inspiring coming from one of our leaders. Tomorrow u hear same for jonathans kids and a whole bunch of them nd u call that inspiring. Dangotez family can do Harvard and I will say oh yes he earned it! Not in a bad way all am saying is; why go all d way abroad when we have schools in naija? Yea,cos its for the poor masses right? Why travel all d way to India and uk to get medical checkups when we have plenty hospitals here that u have refused to equip! And nwa ogbenye goes to those places and die accidentally cos of lack of proper diagnosis. I was present at an event that Coscharis did a talk many years ago, and he said stg very inspiring" he made sure all his children studied in naija" not bcos he didn't have money to take them out but to discipline them and make them understand what life is about. Because she is one of our leaders and they aren't doing any good to our country in terms of schools n hospitals, well am not inspired.. my take!

Let it be a crime to me If I don't give my kids a better life and education than what I got from my parents, though my parents tried so well from the little they had...so help me God, amen.
