Lagos State Govt Shut Down Churches in Lagos Over Noise Polution

The Lagos State Government through one of its agencies - the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), over the weekend shut down some churches in Lagos over what the government termed - noise polution.

The churches affected include - Lord's Chosen in Surulere, Bible Church in Festac, The Chapter of Christ Church in Oregun Ikeja, Seek and Save Ministry, Abule Egba, Assemblies of God church, Ikeja, The Golden Gate Church, Ifako Ijaiye.
A rep of the agency say the churches were shut down after the churches disregarded pre-sanction notices given to them to abate the noise pollution emanating from their worship centres.

The government say they are determined to reduce noise polution in Lagos State, so more churches will be shut down.

Dear LASEPA, I live in Surulere, and there are at least three churches around my area that needs to be closed...the noise is unbelievable!

May God forgive whoever took the decisions to close the Churches,God's own place. What about the mosques? Don't they make noise too. Why Christians all the time? Let them not let God's wrath to come upon them, bcos if it does, they can't escape it.

Please I hope the mosques with all their 'megaphones' outside 'doing' their 'call to prayer' at different times of every blessed day are being shut down too?

@Anonymous 8:20, y wld u call someone a dummy? BTW the call to prayers from mosque are usually too loud and are done even @ early hours of the days...at different times of d day...every day of the week for ur info.

Its totally unnecessary to call people names when they make known their opinion.

Its funny. But come to think of it, there is a church behind my house at akoka. They do night vigil almost every night.

@Anonymous8:20pm: you are the dummy! Don't sound like an idiot. If churches are being shut down for noise making, the mosques should too.Imams do not need microphones to call people for prayers. Almost everyone has a wristwatch or some other time source in this age and time. You should take yourself to prayer when it's time.

This is Insane,...I remember some years ago when I was anchoring a praise night. Na gun dem use pursue us comot from church that night.....May God forgive all of you that are saying they should close down more churches,...

What about the noise? Everyone has right to whateva religion they practise n this might lead to a religious war in lagos, pretty soon. They had beta luk for alternative means of reducing noise instead incuring the wrath of God upon themselves when ppl organise loud parties in lagos evry wiv more noise.

Why is it that anytime I see a coment on anything islamic, on any blog or site, it is always followed by a reply from a moslem. That's not the issue. The issue that the reply is always rude and angry. And yet islam is supossedly a religion of peace. Why is it that even the average everyday moslem seems extremist? And is biased? U said nothing about the closed churches, yet someone just mentions the idea of a closed mosque and that's an issue. That warrants you calling someone you don't know, who may be your elder, a 'dummy'. Does the koran support such talk? Well, with the excessive rate at which I meet such replies like this online, maybe. When your mosques are holding their friday jumat services, in some areas they close the road to traffic. Where I live there are mosques that use a speaker system just as loud as these churches. I really don't blame you guys though. I blame us. When islam started acting like a spoilt child, throwing tantrums everywhere in the name of fundamentalism and extremism, the name of political islam (check your encyclopedia for the meaning of that term), we the christian world just indulged you. And you got worse, throwing even louder tantrums. What we need is to become extremist like you all. Reply all posts that attack anything christain rudely. Have christian terrorist groups, our own al-queda and boko haram that kills moslems, then blame them as extremist only saying that 'they should stop what they are doing, that christainity is a religion of peace' but doing nothing more, registering countries as christain and beheading, raping and imprisoning moslems and non christians like you people do in egypt and iran and tha arabian countries. Then things will be even. The proverbial spanking of the tantrum child. Maybe then he'll keep quiet a bit...

What about the mosques that consistently do this everyday at 6am?

Ay A said...

If only Nigerians would emulate useful and important cultures from the west we would lead better lives.
Noise pollution is totally unacceptable and to think some people here are coming to support the churches and saying God would fight etc shows our level of ignorance.
As an Environmentalist living in the UK, I would like to let you know that you can sue any churches in your area that are causing public nuisance, you can get an injuction or abatement against them. Better still, if you can prove that they have caused you psychological problems, you can get compensation. I know this is costly and time consuming but it is not impossible.
We have to start doing things the right way. No one has the right to disturb another person's right to a private and enjoyable life. (Human rights law which Nigeria is part of)
I can't wait to return to Nigeria and work with the Lagos state Govt. or the Fed. Govt, we have to start from somewhere.
All this nonsense has to stop.

Anonymous said...

its not all bout shutting down churches.we have a whole lots of mosque making noise and disturbing early in d morning. Fashola should do same if this is truly democracy.

Anonymous said...

What about the mosques that consistently do this everyday at 6am? Are these people afraid of what muslims will do and consider xtians easy pushovers/ coz the guy himself is muslim? These peeps should be careful to make this as unbiased as possible. There are more churches so i'd expect it to be skewed but how come not a single mosque made the list?

anon @8.20 dont be daft, noise pollution is noise pollution, either 15 mins for a call to prayer or 2hrs for a church service, noise is noise. Take heed to your own advice and keep it on mute. Lagos is an extremely noisy city, from mosques to churches, music vendors, commercial drivers and the lot. Hope this can be dealt with efficiently and more importantly, effectively.Eko o ni baje o!

Please dont let us be sentimental about this issue, The noise some of these churches make is unbearable. But really do mosques make so much noise? i doubt they do but if they do, then LASEPA should do the needful.

This is persecution ho ha! But I still believe our churches can still operate without speakers outside. Even though, there are times I will be depressed$the praise and worship even the word of God coming thru d speakers minister to me. Anyway, the bible said we shd obey d govt of d land. But let them visit mosques too. Itz really a sensitive issue.

Uniport said...

Not taking sides here, but most churches do really cause noise polution.

Anonymous said...

I hope this is not political? What abt d noise polution emanating 4rm the mosques. To say the least, the use of gramophones makes it even more irritating. Some of these mosques should be shut down too. A typical example is the one adjacent to itire police station, kabiyesi street. This is most anoying and unbearable.

Am a Christian and what i believe in is not synonymous to wrong doing... "Noise Pollution" is not same thing as preaching the gospel to all nations! if the GOVT. has issued warnings to the offending assemblies i'ld suggest that they comply. Honestly, its really wrong to put out loud speakers constituting nuisance in the environment. TO hear the WORD of GOD nor be by force its by Grace :-)
Please BRF close down as many religious centers that won't comply to environmental regulations!

Pls when will Delta State Govt follow suit??? Am grateful to God for rescueing me from the horrible psychological trauma I suffered while living in a house surrounded by churches in warri. I only gained my sanity and peace when I started I got a house in MaiTaima, Abuja. U hardly hear this kind of noise in FCT. Pls let the federal govt assist all state govt in this so that other parts of the country will enjoy this calm environment. Senate should pass a bill directing all churches and mosques to relocate from residential areas to commercial areas.

Has u ever been to Agege (mushalashi Alhaja) during their afternoon prayer? they block the main road, even moving stops until they are done. Now what do u call that? Is it the call to prayer of 5am on a weekend when u which to have a nice sleep. Common! who is fooling who? this is just another Boko Haram attack on the churches. But know this for sure, God will fight his battle in his own way. BEWARE!!!

THIS IS THE REASON I WILL ALWAYS SAY A MUSLIM IS A MUSLIM WHETHER FROM THE NORTH OR FROM THE WEST. CLOSING DOWN CHURCHES WITHOUT CLOSING DOWN MOSQUES IS JUST A CLEAR EVIDENCE THAT THE RELIGIOUS HATRED IS NOT JUST WITH THE NORTH BUT HERE WITH US IN THE SO CALLED METROPOLITAN CITY OF LAGOS. I CAN ONLY SUPPORT THE IDEA IF THE ACTION IS TAKEN OUT ON ALL NOISE MAKERS IN LAGOS INCLUDING THE CROAKER VOICED AGBEROS THAT SHOUT ON THE ROADS EVERY MINUTE OF THE DAY. IF THEY DO THIS EQUALLY THEN WE CAN KNOW THAT IT IS A WELL MEANING ACT.

Anonymous said...

We dnt need to be sentimental abt dis but for me i think some churches and mosque needed to make sure that their noises does not disturb the peace of others. i dont support the situation that churches make so much noise to the detriment of people living in the area most especially people who are sick. All, they needed to do is make an enclosure and keep the noise in their churches and mosques.
This should also aply to people who uses industrial generator which constituted so much noise.
