Mr President clap for yourself...welldone!

So our dear president plans to remove subsidy from Petroleum products from 2012. We buy fuel now at N65 per litre...without the subsidy, one wonders what we will be paying for a litre of fuel...N100? More? How can this man do this? And they say it's in the best interest of the country? Maybe I'm not smart enough to understand, so can someone explain to me...how is this move good for me as a Nigerian?

On paper, it should be good for you. How you may ask? Think PTF. What basically happens is that your government is so indolent that rather than put mechanisms in place which will ensure that we refine our crude oil domestically, they'd rather import refined products, sometimes even from african countries that have no crude oil. At the end of the day, it well over N65/litre to get the product here. The government now pays the balance. A good example of a deregulated product is diesel which sells at over N120 per litre. I suspect that that is where we'll most likely end up with petrol.

Why should it be good for you? Well, it will free up more cash for the government (federal and state) to develop other key area. But come on, this is Nigeria after all. What will most likely happen is that the polithievecians will have more money to steal. The solution to this perennial song about subsidy or no subsidy is simple; build more fucking refineries and ensure that they're are properly run. More jobs will be created and the additional cost of importation will be wiped out.

These guys do not realize that Nigeria is sitting on a keg of gunpowder awaiting the slightest of spark to explode..

You dont really deserve an explanation... you have forgotten your obvious support for the president leading to the elections & justification of N50 000 largesse to individual youths he met in Lagos for a few hours. When I raised the issue of the fact that as a corper, my monthly salary was not up to N10 000, your defence was your time was worth much more. Nigeria can be depressingly hard on many of us, now it seems you also know where the shoe pinches.

Nothing government does can be beneficial to us. That is Nigerian government. They have never and will never consider us before taking any decision. My guess is that removal of the subsidy is because subsidy is taking a huge toll on 'funds for looting'. My problem with this goddamn country is that we know the right thing to do but never do it. Goodluck is there always speaking grammar, but nothing. Why have they not yet started building refineries. God go PUNISH this our Nigerian leaders.

If they dare do this, what happened in Eqypt and Libya will be child's play compared to what will happen here. A hungry man is an angry man! They are joking with us. They want us to die of poverty. The rate at which the naira is depreciating against the dollar shows me that Okonjo Iweala is simply acting out IMF's script. I'm sure she is aiming for it to get to =N=200 to a dollar. IMF had suggested earlier on this year that the naira should be devalued.

This govt is full of hypocrites! They do not have the interest of the people at heart at all.

this govt is so insensitive to common man's plight, guess the money to steal is reducing, probably they have milked the nation dry and the only way to get more money is thru this essential commodity, he know whether we like it or not we must fuel cars and generators, since he cannot profer simple solution to common electricity...this just confirm he is as clueless as ever...chiken liver president

Let them go on and remove the fuel subsidy. The masess will still resist them, but at the end, they will have their way. A great number of the politicians who parade as leaders were railroaded into power and therefore feel no moral obligation to do anything to lift the people out of the abyss of poverty they have fallen. Removal of fuel subsidy or deregulation is only what they want. Just to add to the suffering of the masses.

The culture of service to the people they ought to imbibe has since given way to treasury looting at every opportunity. This is in spite of the hitherto feeble attempts of the anti-graft agencies of government to apprehend most culprits who still walk the streets freely.

Fifty One years after independence, we are still considering psychiatric tests for public office holders whose gluttonous accumulation of wealth suggests 'madness'. But how many of these gluttons have been brought to book despite incriminating evidences laid against them by the state? Are they the untouchables of the society we talk about everyday? The confused leaders we have in positions of trust have so dragged the educational and many other sectors to a crossroads. Can one tell me which sectors of the ministries or parastatals are working. What a country?

Removal of fuel Subsidy means more money in the pocket of the politicians. To be sincere, government have nothing to offer nigerians as they claim. Because they are corrupt. Whatever subsidy they remove will end up in private pockets. They can go ahead and remove the subsidy but they will see serious resistance from the masses. How can we forgot so soon? Have we forgotten the issue of toll gates? The promise to the people of nigeria when toll gate was introduce. That the proceeds will be used in maintaining our roads. We all know what happend.
But I as a person know most of their tricks and plans.

There are arguments for and against petroleum subsidy removal. I'm not for or against:

• (1) Google:

subsidy + petrol + nigeria

• (2) Google:

subsidy + petrol + nigeria + advantages + disadvantages

Here's the summary: http://www.economicshelp.org/marketfailure/subsidy-positive-ext.html

Linda, the most painful thing about the removal, is that the money that would be be realized, will end up in the pockets of very few greedy individuals, and the poor masses will continue smiling and suffering.

Have never believed in him for once. If another south like Pat Utomi is in GEJ's position, Nigeria would never be in this position. I quote GEJ" A decision would be taken that will affect Nigerians(we the poor),and we need to be ready 4dat.
LIST OF HIS DECISION.
1.Go against d constitution by sacking d Appeal Count President.
2.Tenure change,3 to 5years.
3.Remover of subsidy.
More his yet 2come.
I hope we won't regret having a goodluck as President.
I don't trust him.

I am for and against the subsidy..it all depends on how you look @ it. It does not make sense for few Nigerians (cartel) to enrich themselves at our expense by importing petrol at whatever price (e.g. N135 per litre),
sell to the public @ N65 while the govt pays them the balance of N75 per litre. On the other hand, governors only agreed to pay minimum wage on the condition that Goodluck will remove fuel subsidy inorder to have sufficient funds to increase their allocation so Goodluck will not build or maintain refineries.

I haven't heard him tell Nigerians the plan in place (if any) once the subsidy is removed. The way he has been squandering money, I wont be surprised if he spends the money and gives the remaning to governors to share AGAIN!! I knew he would be no good and could not believe Nigerians were so myopic during his campaign.
How can someone promise you heaven on earth and you don't ask him HOW he'll achieve it???

Well personally, fuel subsidy = my tax return.

You guys never see anything yet! When all you bloody entertainers(movie actors, musician) voted the bastard in you didn’t know is plan. Him first use money to lure you guys into his camp. The guy never start with Nigeria….. Until this foolish president of yours split Nigeria because he is already causing tension amongst all the tribes for Nigeria we need a bloody revolution for that country…….person way go die go die and person wey remain go rule that country

I wonder why some Nigerians are always abusive when making comments. Your insults will not change anything.

I am strongly against the removal of fuel subsidy. There are other means of improving the economy such as the diversification of export base of the economy and strengthening trade relationships with other african countries.

Only the marketers benefit from this subsidy. yes the oil price may go up but then at least the govt wil have more money to execute developmental projects (God's willing).

Anonymous said...

There is no economies on earth that can justify this act. Even the United States, have subsidies on their gas, This is just going to create an unmerited inflation in the country as everything and everyone depends on gas to survive. Crime rate is going to sky rocket, Rape, poverty, basically SES (Socio-economic Status) will be terribly affected. We are the fifth largest exporter of gas and we still have shortage and pay at a high price for something we produce in our own back yard. Mr. President obviously did not study market faliure, (Demand and supply) in Economics.

We need to know why the government is removing oil subsidy. Is there any thing like subsidy or they just want to increase the price of petrol. The answer to the above questions show that we have bad and evil leaders in our country. When they want to sap money from the masses they say they are removing subsidy, that never ends.BAD GOVERNMENT , BAD LUCK . Quote me, God will intervene very soon , in Jesus Name,Amen

@anon 5:27pm, unfortunately, the Nigerian governments never have 'enough' money for developmental projects. We have people in govt. who are not interested in you and me, no matter how much they have, they will never develop the country.I am not a naysayer but that is the truth. Our govt. is made up of job-men who just want to loot, loot and only loot. The more they keep the masses as 'masses', the better for them. The truth is its either a revolution or we continue making comments on blogs which translate to nothing.

they said part of it will be for welfare which isn't so bad as it's about time we have a welfare system in place in Nigeria. But the koko is, will that money be used honestly? Build refineries, revive industries and create jobs. 1) You reduce the no of unemployed graduates on the streets 2) More revenue and better economy. I can go on about things that we can change cos it's not rocket science. it's a matter of principle and willingness but is the govt willing to change?

Our President has no brain and therefore cannot think......
The decision makers who have come up with this idea are thieves looking for more money to steal.....
how can they consider the impact when all they think about is how to store more money? This is one of the very few ways the common man can feel d impact of the government and they want to steal that too?

How does this benefit the minimum wage earner? how does this benefit the common man?

This wicked decision will logically make things expensive for everyone...

ripple effect..fuel subsidy removed, fuel price goes up, cost of transportaion goes up, cost of feeding goes up, cost of production goes up, etc thereby increasing the cost of living in Nigeria.

God please give us leaders who will think with a reasonable amount of compassion!

Nigerians whine too damn much. Nigerians pays the least amount for Crude oil products in the world, yet they complain. If you guys don't want the subsidy removed then be prepared for a harder time. With the world price of crude oil going down combine with higher output from other nations what do you guys expect the Nigerian Govt. to do? An economy that has no other major source of income other than Crude oil, the Govt. has to find a way to supplement their loss revenue. If the Subsidy is not removed, then Nigeria will go completely broke even if the Politicians and their members quit stealing public funds. To make Nigerian situation worse, Naira just took a nose dive against the Dollar. This is a warning shot to Nigeria, Oil is slowly becoming worthless and so will any economy that depends on it.

Buhari would have done a much better Job than this.

This government, this govt....everyone laments. All I think we the youths should do is to protest otherwise we will stay here complaining and nothing ever gets better rather it gets worst by the day. I will not cause anybody but all I know for sure is that God has a way of purnishing those who mislead people....by the time God will start....mmmmh...

Nigeria is slowly getting seriously broke again. Fuel is subsidized from the foreign reserve (which oil export funds). Now its been depleted by nonstop looting and inconsistent (and somewhat deranged) policies. So its either that, our we're bankrupt!

...wouldn't it just be better for IBB, Abacha's heirs, OBJ, GEJ, Yaradua's heirs and their associates to just return what they took from the whole nation's foreign reserve??

And to top it off, CBN is saying they may have to allow the naira depreciate! And still no one's conscience is pricking them.
