Woman carried her dead twins inside her for 5 days because doctors refused to do an evacuation immediately

31-year-old Sambi Manyaka (pictured above) carried her dead children inside her for 5 days because doctors refused to remove them immediately. She was told by the doctors to return in five days to have the dead babies removed. One of the nurses told her to go home and bond with her children while they were still within her.

According to Daily Sun SA, Sambi was seven months pregnant when she went to Lebowakgomo Hospital in Limpopo for a check-up where she was told that her twins died in her womb. She claims the doctors told her to return in five days for the dead babies to be removed.
"After the doctors told me my twins were dead, I pleaded with them to operate. One of the nurses laughed at me and told me to go home and bond with my children while they were still with me,” she said.
After getting a second opinion from a private doctor, she went back to the hospital to beg staff to operate but she was told the hospital was full.
“I couldn’t sleep at night because I thought I would die as well,” she said.
Sambi was eventually operated on last week at Tambo Memorial Hospital in Gauteng. She was discharged on Wednesday, August 19 and is doing well. Meanwhile, Health department spokesman Macks Lesufi confirmed that Sambi was seen at the hospital and left after being sent home.
“We condemn the allegations but we have to investigate to find out what really happened,” he said
He added that the Health department would look at her file and if any official had acted improperly, action would be taken against that person.

I don't know.......but Google is your friend. I had the same reaction. When I heard a similar tale about two weeks ago..... my research showed that babies can be left for up to two weeks before evacuation to allow the parents process the grief. Google might be right or wrong and the hospital can be right or wrong too.

I know someone whose womb was destroyed because she got bad news,
baby in her womb died from the shock, she noticed baby no longer moving,
but delayed a few days before seeing the doctor - couldn't imagine it was that bad.
Anyway doctor evacuated her but told her that her womb had rotted too.

In this present case I imagine that the doctors would not tell this
woman the condition of her womb as it will implicate them!

She needs to do more for herself.

Are you kidding me? That hospital should be sued and shut down! What rubbish!

Linda Welldone o, be feeding the ignorance in Africa. So u too could not do a few Internet checks before posting this story???
A child can be left for up to two to three weeks as doctors wait for nature to take its course. Even in the developed world , it is the best advice they give to patients even though it's not that easy but nature will always take its course and eject the dead babies. Only thing is u need to offer the mum support, medically and psychologically. so why put her through a surgical procedure for dead babies and leave her with a scar including all the risks assoc with any surgical procedure. The other option is to induce labour and help her deliver the dead babies vaginally.
U ppl just post sensational news and instead of using that opportunity to inform the public u had to the thick ignorance already covering the region.
I
Am not hating but instead of buying all these ur designer this and that, why not grow ur business into a brand , why not employ medical/ social/ political editors and make this ur blogging business one with a difference. A little more investment will only bring in more money, don't be satisfied by the little designers u can afford c after all mark (FB) could av been satisfied long ago when he cld afford the basic things of life but he invested more and more and is still investing in FB despite being worth billions of dollars. But then again, he had a vision before he started, guess urs was 'jamming luck' so u r stuck. Pls grow up.
PS: I am not hating

This should not be news if the baby has only be dead for 5 days. Dead babies can stay within the mother for up to 3-4 weeks. In fact, that is usually the first line of management as the womb will normally expel a dead baby on it owns usually within 2 weeks of death. Ideally though, the mother should be monitored in order to know when to step in. I'm guessing the mother was probably not appropriately counseled, hence the reason for the hysteria.

Hmmm. I carried a dead baby for 6months plus coexisting with the second twin. The doctors Found out the baby was dead at 12weeks and forced me to carry both babies till delivery. God, am a testimony.

Anonymous said...

Big mumu, where did you see Nigeria written on the story

Anonymous said...

While waiting 5days isn't normal. No good doctor will want to make u go thru a caesarean operation nd leave u with a scar for babies dat r not alive.

Yrs it happened to me at a nigerian hospital. I was told to go home and process the grief since it came as a shocker but when I insisted I wanted an evacuation immediately, they booked me for one. It is the woman's choice if she wants to bond got 5 days, no hospital should make her do bit against her will!

Juleslouis said...

Some doctors and nurses r just devils in disguise!

Anonymous said...

Madam the doctors didn't force you to carry the dead baby for 6 months, that was the only way to keep the other twin alive.Stop making the doctors who saved your baby look bad when actually your ignorance is what you have just displayed.

Eyah.....cn u imagine d suffering of a mother? I tink d hospital should be shut down.

Pls research . I tot it ws a big deal to leave such in a woman until i had same experience. I panicked , I had to wait 4 3days here in abroad b4 d evacuation. But i must confess its not an easy thing to wait dat long.
