Nigerian girl emerges best graduating student at American university

20 year old Delta state born Merrilyn Akpapuna (pictured above) on May 10th 2014 emerged overall Best Graduating Student of Dillard University, New Orleans, USA.

Merrilyn, the daughter of a dental surgeon, graduated with a first class honors in Psychology. She also won two other awards for highest academic achievements for the College of Arts and Sciences and College of General Studies.

Her feat made her share the podium with US First Lady, Michelle Obama, who attended the school's convocation. Merrilyn is pictured above with the President of Dillard University, Dr Walter Kimbrough. Congrats to her. What an inspiration. Continue...

Three other Nigerians also shined at the convocation ceremony. Victor Ogburie, Stephen Igwe, and Emole Anyadimgba all graduated with first class honors in their various discipline.
Victor Ogburie (left), 24, graduated with first class in Computer Science. Emole Anyadimgba (middle), 27, from Abia state graduated with a first class in Computer Science. Stephen Igwe (right)  26, graduated with a first class in Biology major. Well done, guys!

First class is a British/Nigerian thing. A US school would use the terms magma cum laude, cum laude or summa cum laude.

For the record Dillard is not an Ivy League University, this is even my first time of hearing about it: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivy_League

And schools in USA don't have "first class" honors either. So whoever sent you this news either didn't get their facts straight or wanted unnecessary publicity.

Unknown said...

Congrats to them. This is how it shld be not d other way round

Dillard University is not an Ivy League School. It is a good historically black school but the Ivy League is made up of only 8 schools- Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University.

Abeg do they do first class in America abi Magna/Summa cum lauda? See how bright we are but the sick society we have messed it all up for our future leaders, see them all swallowed up in America. Chai!
Anyways, many Nigerians in America study too hard to make excellent grades, thats why they keep graduating best, they too memorize...an average American does not cram/memorize and most of them go ahead to invent/create. It's time we stopped being 'best' in class, theres too much emphasis on graduating best/first. It's time we start thiunking toi create/invent!

Nigeria student are brillant. Everywhere in the world there is a Nigeria first class holders in universities. Hot sun, strike, hunger etc are the cause of mass failure in Nigeria

Anonymous said...

Linda, Dillard is no freaking ivy league as we know it. Rather, it's a black ivy league school. Black ivy league schools are historical black colleges that used to attract the best among the blacks back in the days. The real, or if you may, the actual ivy league schools are just 8 in number, and Dillard can never be amongst those 8.

Meanwhile, a big congrats to the guys. They have done very well for themselves, ivy league or not.

Linda Dillards is NOT an Ivy league school, It is a good university but not an IVY league school. Even Stanford is not an IVY league school.Check what you put out there. There is no Ivy league school outside of the East Coast. You can have great universities in the West or the south. It does not take away from the kids achievement to graduate from great universities.

Anonymous said...

Linda u don't graduate with first class in America you graduate summa cum laude with a perfect 4.0 or 5.0 GPA...first second and third class are the British... system

Dillard is not an ivy league school

It is shone,, not shined

Anonymous said...

Congratulations to those brilliant people. It always pleases me when my compatriots distinguish themselves overseas, countering our negative international image. Two humble corrections though. I thought America had eight Ivy League Universities:- Harvard, Cornell, Yale, Princeton, Pennsylvania, Brown, Columbia, and Dartmouth College. Secondly, I thought the past tense of 'shine' was 'shone,' not 'shined.' I could be wrong though. Please enlighten me if I am wrong.

Naija Yankee Boy said...

Linda, Dillard University ain't no Ivy League University. Ivy Leagues are in the Northeast. Dillard is HBCU. WTF! Get your facts right. You're a big blogger, lady. Nigerian Americans read your blog. Also, ain't nothing like First Class in the USA. It's called Summa Cum Laude.

Anonymous said...

Nice one guys.but somthing like this raises concern about how well recorgnised nigerian universities are.I checked up this Dillard University online only to find out quite a number of nigerian universities are better ranked.you can check 4icu.org for that.if people, especially employers disciminate some of our nigerian universities based on university ranking, then there is a huge problem when they hype students with foreign certificates from schools with much lesser rank.but the truth is,a good grade is a good grade.Congrats to them ones again

Anonymous said...

Linda o! Dillard University is not Ivy-League. It is a pretty good historically Black college. Ivy league schools are all located in North East America...their location and age at the time they were founded is the ONLY thing that qualifies them to be Ivy League.
