Jigawa Governor's son arrested for money laundering at Kano airport

One of the sons of the Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, was arrested around 12 midnight at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport as he prepared to board an Egypt Air flight to Cairo.

Aminu Lamido was flagged after he declared $10,000 in his possession to agents of of the Nigerian customs at the airport. However further checks by agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the airport revealed that he was carrying a lot of money far higher than was disclosed.

Custom officials at the airport told SaharaReporters that Mr. Aminu travels frequently with huge wads of cash ostensibly to launder money on behalf of his father and some officials of the state.

EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren confirmed the arrest to SaharaReporters, saying that EFCC office in Kano will charge the governor's son to court as soon as practicable.

Why do people do this all the time= always always declare the amount of money in your possession, no matter how much- once a friend gave me money to give her son- it was about $30,000- when leaving Nigeria, I declared it, stating that I had 38,000 and stating the source of the money. On getting to the UK, I declared the money too. Your money is only seized if customs have reasons to suspect that it is the proceeds of illegal activities and one reason so much is seized is because people are not declaring it!

Al dis corrupt govtments God wil catch, expose nd destroy them nd their family. Bc. U wil secure loan to send yr children to University but to get job is in vain just imagine 10,000 dollars for one person, dis is a complete madness. Barawo! Thief! Ole.

This story sound suspicious.

1. Why was he not taken through VIP entrance as a serving Governors son? 2. Would he not have some sort of immunity as his Governor father would enjoy while serving? he might.

and the Boy is stupid as hell to, has he not heard of wire transfers, bank transfers or even simple credit card or American Express Black card? These people lack simple business acumen or political imagery etiquette training

This is a bailable and easily sorted out matter. "Nothing" WILL happen here...NOTHING

Question is it the principal of the EFCC now to ambush at the airports while there real crime is where is all the money coming from.

Typically the declaration occur when entering another country "NOT" while your still in your own country and typically the request is a the behest of customs and border control personnel.

There are no restrictions on the amount of money you may take into most civilized climes, although if you take in more than $10,000 in currency or ‘monetary instruments’ you’re required to state this on your customs declaration form (large sums of cash are often carried by criminals, particularly drug traffickers).

Where is EFCC's role here?

Departure and Arrival Procedures

1. International departure procedure

Checkin - Luggage Delivery - Getting Boarding Card - Quarantine - Customs - Immigration - Security Check - Waiting and Boarding

2. International Arrival Procedure

Quarantine - Immigration - Luggage Reclaim - Customs - Enter greeting hall

3. Domestic departure procedure

Checkin - Luggage Delivery - Getting Boarding Card - Security Check - Waiting and Boarding.

4. Domestic Arrival procedure

Reclaim Luggage - Enter Greeting Hall

THE IMMUNITY OF A STATE GOVERNOR

The Nigerian Perspective

Immunity under Nigerian law is governed by Section 308 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1990, which provides that during their tenure of office, no criminal proceedings may be brought against the President, Vice-President, governors and their deputies, nor may any civil proceedings be instituted against them in their private capacities, nor may they be arrested or imprisoned during that same period. In order to preserve the right of a plaintiff to sue any of these officials, it is provided that the statute of limitations will not run against a claimant until the expiration of the term of the office of the official concerned". Therefore, it could be said that within Nigeria’s domestic jurisdiction, State Governors enjoy both Functional and Personal Immunity. For the purposes of international law, it is only the President that enjoys "independent sovereign immunity" in a true Federation like Nigeria, in contradistinction to the situation existing in a confederation or a quasi-confederal state like Canada where each of the constituent states enjoy independent sovereign immunity in foreign countries.

THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACT, 1993

The Criminal Justice Act, 1993 was promulgated in the United Kingdom to make money laundering a very serious criminal offence. The Law creates offences which relate to the laundering of money which is the proceeds of criminal conduct other than the drugs trafJicking and terrorism. One of the implications of this Act is that you can be prosecuted in the United Kingdom for laundering the proceeds of criminal conduct even though the conduct all took place overseas...

By this Law, any Governor, like Diepreye Alamieyeseigha who brings in money into the United Kingdom which is a product of corrupt practices at home in Nigeria can be arrested, tried and convicted in the United Kingdom.

There are other legislations in this direction promulgated by the Parliament in England which make it an offence for any Bank or Bank Manager or Bank official who fails to report to the British Police any lodgment in the Bank Account which is more than $10,000 and in some cases, the failure carries a maximum imprisonment of 15 years.

Let Nigerians understand that the British are not joking with their anti-corruption war. It is only here at home that anti-corruption crusade of the Federal Government is half hearted.

In England, the Police and other law enforcement agents are not subject to the control of the Prime Minister. But is General Olusegun Obasanjo giving the law enforcement agents in our country including Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) absolute free hand to rid the country of corrupt public officers?

Nigerian ur destiny is in your hands.
i don talk my own.

Abeg abeg abeg! This efcc should let nigerians rest! Why make a fuss outta this??? Especially when we know nothing will happen the "untouchables"???

Anonymous said...

Please,Please,Please that story might be true, but the picture is false, a clear defamation of the real guy. That picture perhaps was used to coverup and hide the identity of the main culprit. The real guy who's picture was used came into a cybercafe this aternoon somewhere in abuja having received a call from his friends and associates alerting him of the incident, and it was clear while every in the cafe confirmed it. This defamation is done because of a misunderstanding the young man had with the Governor some time ago.
