Ripples of Hurricane Sandy may hit Lagos within a week - Govt

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday warned residents of the state to prepare for the ripple effect of Hurricane Sandy in the state.

The Commissioner for Waterfront Development and Infrastructure, Mr. Adesegun Oniru, said the government was projecting that within seven to 14 days, the state would experience the ripple effect of the hurricane in its coast lines.

He explained that the government based its projection on, “experience, records and study of past happenings” and had started taking precautionary measures.

Oniru said, “This warning is not to cause panic in Lagos, but to place us all on alert that if we notice anything unusual in our coast lines, we should not go near the waters but rather call government attention.

“This storm has hit the Caribbean and is now in USA. We always get a ripple effect of such happening in Lagos.
“This wind started in Africa, went west gathering more wind and later turning to hurricane. We expect a splash back effect. It could be on our coast lines and shore lines, it could be more than that. And it may not happen at all. Everybody must be vigilant. Let us be careful around our oceans and lagoons.”

The commissioner said the government was planning to protect Kuramo, Oniru, Majidun, Alpha beach and other areas affected by the last ocean surge in the state.

The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on the Environment, Dr. Taofeek Folami, urged the residents of the state to avoid flooding effect of the storm by refraining from dumping their refuse into drainage channels.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Lateef Ibirogba, urged the  state residents not to  panic, saying the alert was for them to know what to do to prepare for such occurence.

Wait Linda, so we don't have any models to predict if Sandy will get to Nigeria? OMG SMH, we are assuming. Damn, shame. Sandy was forecasted ages ago in the US and evacuation was made. All the guy is saying, if anybody sees anything strange to alert government. Na wa oh...

Aremu should face what he knows best 'woman matter' they never know what they are talking about until it's too late.

They should just shut up and stop buying market wey no concern dem. Nonsense! The storms in d US will not have been as bad, if those damn storm chasers didn't go about predicting every lil wind as an impending storm. Some of their vids I've watched, makes me laff.... The kind of wind that tosses the leaves of a tree is a potential storm to dem. Whereas in Naija, some kain wind will uproot a tree, and you'll hear our people saying "the rain won't fall joor" or "it's just making yanga". Abeg make dem leave American palava for dem... We have enuf on our plate already.

Unfortunately people will still keep dumping their shit in drainage channels..lots of ignorant pple in this city

These people should please stop making uninformed statements. "Oniru said, “This warning is not to cause panic in Lagos, but to place us all on alert that if we notice anything unusual in our coast lines, we should not go near the waters but rather call government attention."
So we need to wait till we see something & then call the govt? Like they're gonna be able to tame a storm if it did come.
Our government needs to starts thinking about being proactive rather than being reactive.
The US govt monitored this storm for weeks and knew its movements all through the process rather than guessing or speculating!

Abeg what is this man saying?? Always wanting to play victim anytime something happens in America....... Y is it that when good things happen in America that we don't experience the ripple effects in Naija? He should leave all that talk..... What equipment did he and his ministry use to do research before coming up with this theory??

Please endeavour to tell friends and relatives in Lagos so that they will be more careful and mindful of places they visit.

I also give kudos to the Lagos State Government for this forewarning. I only hope the government currently has the necessary resources to take proactive measures in order to prevent any preventable disaster and I also hope the Lagosians would co-operate with the government by taking any proactive measure they are asked to take.

Nigerians are funny men, you have being told of the impending danger of storm sandy and some are just running their mouths. It will interest you to know the alpha beach surge that happened the last 2 times were as a result of typhoon/tsunami and earthquakes from other countries. I live in ajah not very far from the beach for the past 3-4 days we've had winds like never before and this happens whenever there's a natural disaster in other countries. So do your research before running your ugly mouths all in an effort to comment... You don't have to comment if you don't want to.

These our politicians no go school LOL. If they knew a least a little on oceanography, they would know that the ocean current flows from East to west i.e via the west African Atlantic coast to the west coast of South and North America, depending on the El Nino or La Nina southern oscillating Ocean current pattern of the southern hemisphere. The Ocean current starts relatively weak along the west African coast, and builds up to a storm/hurricane on getting to the Caribbean and Atlantic coasts of the USA. The winds subsequently get into the land and weaken before reaching canada. They are known as Ocean currents. Unfortunately, our Lazy politicians don't do any research before displaying some unfortunate unforgivable utterances contrasting their so-called social/ political standing in the society. Unfortunately, this is an elementary form of geography I expect these politicians to know - It makes me question what form of pre-requisite qualification they used in occupying public office.
Instead of improving the emergency aid being given to flood victims, here they (Politicians) are AGAIN, flexing and displaying their innate level of ignorance
