Topic of the day: Should the Nigerian govt negotiate with terrorists?

Terrorist sect Boko Haram yesterday said they were ready to ceasefire but gave conditions:
1. Former Head of State, Muhammed Buhari as leader of the negotiating team.
2. Dialogue must take place in Saudi Arabia, not Nigeria
3. Arrest and prosecution of former Governor of Borno State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff.
4. All their members who were arrested must be released immediately.
5. Their wives and children who were displaced following the crises should be rehabilitated into the society
Presidential spokesman Reuben Abati said yesterday that the President has gotten their offer and said it was a welcome development. Should the Nigerian government negotiate with terrorists? Please share your thoughts...

Smart negotiation is important at this point because we can't keep loosing innocent lives.
to avoid more blood shed, the FG should do something.

Should the Government continue to watch them killing our people and do nothing ?
What has the Government done to Senetors involved ?
Should the Christians live in fear always ?
Should Gej continue to apologize and make lame excuses ???????????????
For the peace of the nation and those of our people in the North let Government do whatever they have to do to stop all this killings .

I dont believe the government should negotiate, but looking at the terms, there might be a need to negotiate as long as there are no financial compensation to them

FUCK DEM IDIOTS AFTER KILLING SO MANY PEOPLE, DE'VE AFFECTED SOOOOOOOOO MANY FAMILIES, NOW DEY WANT TO NEGOTIATE. MAY THEY ALL ROT FOR THEIR WICKED ACTIONS, THEY WUDNT HAVE STARTED DIS BARBARIC ACT IN D 1ST PLACE, WATS D GUARANTEE DE'L STOP AFTA D NEGOTIATION?? #NONEGOCIATION.

hmmmmm! what a condition!

Anonymous said...

Their conditions are laughable. Who will rebuild the churches they destroyed. Who will rehabilitate the families they render fatherless, motherless, orphans etc. Government can negotiate with them but not on their terms.

HeartBender said...

Yes they should negotiate with them. The late yar adua did us all a favour with his amnesty programme. Today ex militants are donating relief materials to flood victims.

It is possible that some youths in the south east and south west might want to start their own so that they can be "rehabilitated" too,but that's not enough reason not to negotiate with the boko haram, its a small price that we have to pay for peace to reign. And let's not forget one thing,we are not Americans, our govt don't have the weapons or strategy to fight boko haram.

Anonymous said...

Of course not. What were their grieviances in the first place. Why muhammed buhari, it goes to show that he is in alliance with them. They are a complete opposite of militancy in the niger delta although the militants became selfish in their fight but they had a just cause

Lola A said...

Mschewww....if they can replace the lives of the men, women and children that they have have taken den we can negotiate...but if they cannot replace the lives.....den no one shud negotiate with those devils! If Goodluck negotiates with this terrorists he's only telling the whole world and other terrorists groups in Nigeria how weak, confused and depressed he is as leader of the biggest African nation. Boko Haram might surrender now but when it becomes tough again they'll continue killing innocent people. Look at Obama, he came into power in 2009 then bam! Osama Bin Laden got maimed and killed. He has this zero tolerance with any terrorists of any kind. Goodluck shouldn't negotiate with these blood suckers. He should learn the basics of dealing with a terrorist group. God bless Nigeria, God bless Linda.

What happens to the Fathers brothers, uncles that have been killed. The Mothers, sisters aunts, cousins that have been killed. What of the families that have scared for life......We need to bleed for our neighbours regaless of what the outcome will be....(I know it will never happen in Nigeria) What Justice do we have for them, how do you go and tell them we have caught the people but we are giving them amnesty. What do we say to the families of corpers that were killed (The youth , our future). Are we afraiad of Boko Haram. A NEGOTIATION WITH THEM INDICATES WEAKNESS and indicates we are afraid of them and I can bet you we are heading for destruction as a country, cos firt it was MEnds, now boko Haram, some group will still spring up. The government thinks we are fools. They have failed the Nigerian people. I am trying to imagine what these families are thinking....Linda, there is a reason not to negotiate with terrorist and that reason is the fact that they may steal, kill, maim us, we might bleed, and they may take our lives, but we should never ever give up our freedom. WE SHOULD NOT NEGOTIATE, WE SHOULD ROOT THEM OUT....

We all know we have a weak president, he will do everything stated above and more sef.

The Nigerian goverment shouldn't be negioiating with terrorist in the first instance but govt has set a precedent by negotiating with the MEND group in the past. This gives the terrorist groups an upper hand.

Negotiate? why? because power must remain in the north? All these heartlessness started when Buhari lost the last elections. There should be no negotiation whatsoever. Without negotiations, that means they are eventually going to kill all southerners with time.

The solution to this problem is that The North and south should disintegrate. The south should gain Independence from Northern Oppression and move on as a different Country so that the blood sucking people can have their own country and continue to kill themselves if they want.

Their tomatoes, maize, groundnut and carrot will sustain their Economy. They are too greedy for the Oil money. If they can, they will kill all the Southerners so that they have complete control over that Oil.
Human nature eh, "come and share with us" Is not the same as "come and kill us"

Why can't Goodluck Jonathan seize this opportunity to separate the South from The greedy north? The South can do very well without them. For me as an individual, I do not need them in any way what soever.
Joy

Anonymous said...

Why won't Buhari be the leader? Is it not because he lost Elections that the killings intensified? Sorry ther wish cannot be granted.

What does the North contribute to the development of Nigeria's Economy? = Ground nut and Tomatoes. Yet they want to be in control so that they can connect pipes to the North and build refineries in the North while Southern youths remain jobless.

Why can't Buhari say something to condemn the killings if he is not the mastermind. Come chop no be come kill o.

Can someone please lend our Presido Idiagbon's strong heart so that he divides this country once and for all. They are asking for too much.

Their people were the ones who ruled and destroyed this country with corruption.
The solution is Nigeria should just divide into two. Let them rule themselves, if not the killings will continue until one day they will plan a genocide and then take over everything.
I am not from Niger Delta, but I want to be free from Nothern Subjugation.

Anonymous said...

No, We shouldn't give into an negotiation with the terrorists ..

Anonymous said...

These people need to know that they are a different people from the south in every way. We are not related at all. They will be better by themselves and free from the South. They are violent while the South is not. Let us divide this coutry already and see if their tomato can buy them bombs. spew!

Welcome development? Really? A country where terrorists/militants are negotiated with, & unarmed dissents are jailed/murdered. Sadly Ironic. They should take a cue from the American govt who dealt with Al Quaeda & even took the fight to their own land & eventually whacked the life off their dirty, cunning, blood-thirsty bastard leader (osama). I'd totally lose faith/hope in this country if the govt decides to negotiate. What then happens to the thousands of innocent 'wives & children' they displaced & murdered in cold blood? Selfish beasts. You know what I think shouldn't be negotiated? RESTORATIVE JUSTICE to the families of the innocent lot killed, & RETRIBUTIVE JUSTICE to the satanic God-forsaken killer sect.
I say, wipe the bloody bastards off the face of the earth. JTF should take them out back, & have bullets put through their brains, then 'promptly' declare a ceasefire after killing them.

Anonymous said...

No Negotiations at all. Divide the country and let them go kill themselves if they like.

Without Negotiations, the killings will intensify. So Divide already let us see how they will cross the borders to come and kill Southerners. Greedy lot.

Anonymous said...

Jesus! I didn't realise dat naija government r dis stupid until now. Dey can as well sign the country into dia hands. Infact, naija needs people like me in d govt.

Anonymous said...

Not possible! Divide this Nation into North and South. Must they kill all southerners before we see the handwriting on the wall. If you negotiate now, the next thing is that they will Demand for Nigeria to become an Islamic State.

South please form your own Nation and free yourselves from this mental slavery.

Anonymous said...

Why is there no comment on such a sensitive issue yet?if its about someone getting pregnant or some amebo gist torrents of comments wouldda been rolling in already.well I don't think d FG shd dance to their tunes cos another sect would spring up n give conditions just like these ones n expect a swift response, call their bluff!

Anonymous said...

Buhari and Babangida plus our Senators please form your own Northern Nation and rule them. Is it greed for oil money or just love for Nigeria that is making you shed so much blood? The South does not need you. Not that Jonathan is the best no.

Come future elections, our eyes are wide open now and we cannot vote for you. Go and rule your Northern brothers. South- South
South-East and South- West is no longer interested in voting a Northerner to rule us oooo.

in my own opinion Government should not dialogue with any terrorists whether BOKO HARAM or any other groups, militant, or what ever there are called, because dialoguing with them will not end terrorism in Nigeria, because when Government negotiate with them now maybe give them what they want. possible they may stop the violent in Northern Nigeria, sooner or later another groups will emerge they will want settlement too, which way Nigeria.

Anonymous said...

It is a welcome development.

Anonymous said...

I am a proud muslim but I say a big fat NO to negotiating with terrorists, they should all be rounded up and jailed or executed by firing squad sef. They lived by the gun and should die by it. After causing so much pain and suffering for innocent people. Displacing people and businesses. Selfish violent idiots, my religion preaches peace so I don't know what version of the holy Quran they chose to read.

The government should not negotiate anything else it will be prelude to many more terrorist groups and that will be a new cash cow. No one should thrive off terror and bloodshed. Absolutely no one.

In developed countries like America, Government NEVER negotiates with terrorists (and even if they do, they don't go announcing it publicly) Did they negotiate with Osama Bin laden? Not to sound like a broken record, but I tire for Nigeria o these are murderers who kill out of selfish reasons. Why entertain them? or make them feel they have some power to sit and discuss anything meaningful. Instead we should be plotting on how to capture these miscreants disturbing our peace. We all know Reuben Abati hasn't really been himself since he cross- carpeted into government, ill take whatever he says with a pinch of salt.

For Nigeria said...

Pscheeeeewwwww! So nw they are tired and scared. No negotition should occur. I trust the nigerian millitary soldiers, they would soon finish all of them. Does anything good come from d devil? These people don't have any humanity in them. If they want to negotiate with FG, let them cease bombings and killings for at least 1 year, and begin a process of disarmament, then they can sit on a round table. No, we cannot go to the Islamic spiritual homeland to negotiate and if Boko Haram want their families to be rehabilitated into society, they must first give up their arms

Dr. Rukevwe said...

In as much as I want these evil acts to stop, I must say, these guys are JOKERS! All their negotiation terms are UNREASONABLE. Its like asking for a pat on the back after all their destruction of lives and properties. And imagine them requesting the negotiation meeting takes place in Saudi Arabia - to end their acts of terrorism in Nigeria. Seriously, I smell a rat!

By the way who would rebuild the churches and properties they destroyed? Who would rehabilitate the families they rendered fatherless, motherless and even childrenless?

After dealing with each and everyone of them, including ALL THEIR FINANCIERS, we can negotiate. Obviously, they are already losing the fight. These guys cannot be trusted. Terrorism in most developed countries, has ZERO TOLERANCE.

And please, stop equating these cowards with the Niger Delta Militants - they are not the same. The Niger Delta Militants were not terrorists; they didn't go about blowing up churches, and mosques and killing innocent people; they didn't go about disrupting Sunday church services and places of worship; and we all knew the collective cause of their anger - lack of proper development in the Niger Delta region. So they are not the same.

Of course! They need to negotiate with them and give them what they want... Its all govt fault not boko haram... Just try to make research about the crisis and you will understand that its all federal govt fault.

Anonymous said...

I fink they should negotiate and come to a better understanding! Y'all are saying what about the people they ve killed? What about the ones they will kill is the question here.. Wouldn't u want peace to reign for ones? Or do u want them to keep bombing and firing people for no reasons! If they would stick to the end of there own bargain then I say yes they should so that the remaining people alive would be restful and peaceful

What will stop others 2mao from harnessing fear and terrorism. First it was those from the niger delta, now its the Boko haram from the north, soon it will be the yorubas with maybe OPC or so! The president knows exactly what to do, but his reasons for not taking action still baffles me till date, and we keep complaining of attacks and the presidency keeps giving the populace the "we'll deal with them " speech.

This is not a raving from a sanctimonious point of view or that of platitudes but of common sense.

Our president will doom us all with the way he handles terrorism.

Many Nigerians are not objective when it comes to pressing issue like this one.
First of all,I will put my questions up for objective answers.
When Soyinka acted as a mediator between Niger delta militants and the federal government, was he considered a member of the militant group? Then why must Buhari be seen in the opposite.
When we talk about people been killed by Boko Haram, no one talks about how many Boko haram members were extra judicially killed by Nigerian soldiers which led to their taking arms against innocent souls and structures. Have we questioned the government for killing these innocent people by the Nigerian Soldiers? Well, I am not saying it is a justification for Boko haram to start killing innocent people and attacking places of worship.
When our people use America as example, they fail to mention the failures experienced by the American government and military. Over ten years in Afghanistan with over 40, 000 soldiers, with sophisticated weapons and ammunition, technology but they are yet to fall a small group of people causing harm.
Besides, we should not forget that the American government has been trying to negotiate with the so-called terrorist in Afghanistan since last year but to no success because they break the rules.
We should note important points before we start posting.
After all of this, I still don't see it as an important strategy of bringing peace in Nigeria. In a short time, boko haram will definately fade off and Nigeria will be in peace again.

This is just blatantly stupid hw can they even consider negotiating with terrorist that have tried to make u look like a weak ass Pres. Or have killed ur people ur citizen that u swore to protect. R u that weak never ever ever ever negotiate with terrorist. They should all be chased down like dogs and killed. If u dare negotiate u will be the first to die cos u av shown. Them they av more power over u

Dey are no longer finding it easy in carrying out der operations datz why dey are calling 4 dialogue now. We hav lost so many pple to Boko Haram menace for just no cause. Who will build all d churches dey hav bombed? who will rehabilitate d innocent pple dey have killed unjustly? its obvious dey can no longer take the heat coming fro JTF men. why do Nigeria Government go to saudi to go negotiate? 4 what? what an insult! from der condition it clear dat men of BOKO HAram are not Nigerians and dis i am too sure of.

Anonymous said...

hell no! I think the nigerian government should round them up and kill them. Nonsense!

the Nigerian government should seek aid from U.S intelligence and have that "Taken" attitude "We will find you and we will kill you". You only negotiate with people that have threatened to commit evil not people that have already killed thousands.

You can't call it a truce at that point, they deserve to be brought to justice AKA death.

The only negotiation that should take place is wiping the scumbags off the face of the earth. Bomb and raze their villages to the ground. Bastards! After murdering so many Nigerians, they have the audacity to come up with such offensive terms. Why should anyone negotiate with terrorists? Kill them all!!

Anonymous said...

In the civil society like Western world. You don't negotiate with terrorist. Lets take for instant..."Boko Haram" they say means Western Education is a prohibited. They are using the latest armory to attack innocent citizens of this great country...Why should Federal Government negotiate with those Beast call themselves men. What about families they have wide from the face of this earth. They all should be executed. Even Federal Government should place surveillance on those people they mention their names, I sincerely believe they are the once behind their activities. They souls of those innocent people that they kill will never never forget FG. if they ever forgive them.

Am not surprised that Buhari’s name was mentioned as the leader of the negotiating team. This whole madness started when he lost the election to uncle Jona. If he was not among them or was not happy with the situation why has he not come out openly to appeal to them to stop all this?

Joy said...

@ Tiodawg
Prof Soyinka was not seen as a member of the militant group because
1)He was not from that region.
2)He condemned them and also suggested to the Govt on what to do
3)He is an activist and not a politician
4)He didn’t run for election and lost after which this whole madness started.
Do you remember what happened in the north immediately after they declared the presidential elections?
That the implication of what happened.

Why don't they ask GEJ to step down.
So Buhari has been behind this.
They are wasting their time

Buhari as negotiator huh? And the truth comes out. I suppose asking that he take over as president would have been too obvious. And why Saudi Arabia? What do they think this is? Asking that the prisoners be released....sure. Let them talk to the relatives of the people they have killed about being released.

Anonymous said...

why should we negotiate with them despite all the harm they have caused pple. i think the government is a big coward if it does. i am not saying i want them to continue terrorising pple but i think we should be the one giving them the terms and conditions not the other way round.

Lookin at all these comments, it baffles me that you all have refused to understand that this is NIGERIA.. Things go the other way round here... We are all shoutin "no negotiation"! "No negotiation!".. It will interest you to kno that negotiations have been ongoin from time immemorial.. Afterall, Gudluck himself said he knows the faces behind the Boko Haram. Do u think if it was that easy to bring them to book, he wudnt have done that long ago?? I'd like you all to understand that this Boko Haram sect is more powerful than the President and his entire cabinet.. The people behind them are high and mighty men of the North. Imagine people being indicted in this whole thing.... Governors, senators.. People of very high political standing..(The untouchables). If they say they are ready to dialogue, we should all go to church and sing halleluyah! Cos this is the best we can get out of this situation..

that's some bullshit negotiation terms, but since some of the government officials are even involved with them, they cant do anything about it, even the senators who are involved have not been apprehended, so the only option we have is to negotiate, and how convenient that the head of the negotiation team would be buhari, though i dont support the negotiation venue, in saudi arabia, boko, will have enough supporters, if they bring an army and start kidnapping the team, you know this means war.

Anonymous said...

No. The govt should not negotiate. Govt shld figure out a way to tackle the issue but negotiating is out of it. So they think they can kill innocent pple and then ask govt to come to the table. they shld ve negotiated first. They can go to hell at this point.

see guts sha!!!! their wives and kids that were displaced shld be compensated. God punish them. What abt the families of the people they kiiled? Govt should not negotiate any rubbish. they shld resurrect the innocent pple they have killed first. Nonsense.

what a shame on nigerian government negotiating with terrorist, there was good for doing that with niger delta militants, what is there reason for taken arms to the street..thousand of innocent life has been lost because of this act...they should be treated as thieves,terrorist...

A criminal is one who commits a crime.

A crime is punishable according to the constitution of the federal republic of Nigerian.

Is terrorism a crime?
Is militancy a crime?
Is armed robbery a crime?
Is kidnapping a crime?
Is corruption a crime?
Is stealing a crime?
Is murder a crime?
Is manslaughter a crime?

Should a government that has vowed to defend the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria grant amnesty to criminals or persecute criminals according to the constitution that they have vowed to defend and uphold?

some Nigerians never cease to amaze me. NO DECENT GOVERNMENT NEGOTIATES WITH TERRORISTS. they should be defeated and crushed like the cockroaches they are and not negotiated with. if big shots like osama bin laden and Gaddafi and Saddam were killed like rats what more these Nigerian hoodlum terrorists?? Nigeria is a failed state and should be re- colonized if they even consider negotiating with terrorists. and as for BUHARI. if he doesn't come out publicly and denounce the proposed role of mediator he should be arrested at once and branded the chief terrorist, arrant nonsense!!!!

O'neil said...

Agreed, they have done alot of bad things, lets leave them to God for judgement but if they want to negotiate for peace, why not? The only thing is that their members (those to be released and otherwise) should remain under check to prevent future insurgence and they should also be kept busy- probably with a job or something
