Christ Embassy: Worshippers Pay N1,000 To Enter Oyakhilome’s Church

Christ Embassy Church in Lagos, South-West Nigeria, is being turned into show business as members were made to part with N1, 000 each as gate fee before they could enter their church to attend the New Year’s Eve service, P.M.NEWS can reveal. P.M.NEWS confirmed that only members who could afford the N1, 000 gate fee were allowed into the premises of Christ Embassy Headquarters at Oregun, Lagos,  where self-styled cleric and business man, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, preached on 31 December 2010.
Indigent members who could not afford the N1, 000 tickets, were denied access and sent back by security men at the gate, it was learnt. The church, a source said, realised about N25 million from about 25, 000 members who bought the tickets. It was gathered that the church informed its members that it decided to impose a gate fee to control the huge crowd that always besiege the church on the New  Year’s Eve church service.

“Pastor said that to control the crowd and only allow genuine members who could do anything to be in church, it was good to pay a gate fee. Last year for  instance, even senior pastors in the church could not secure a seat in the church on New Year’s Eve service,” our source said. The ticket, bought by our correspondent, was still on sale today, five days after the New Year’s church service took place.

A copy of the ticket has the following information printed on it: “one service…different locations worldwide impact! Time: 7 pm, Venue: Loveworld Convocation  Arena, N1,000, December 31st New Year’s Eve Service With Pastor Chris.” There is also a bold picture of Oyakhilome wearing one of his flashy suits. On the background there is a huge crowd in adulation of the man who once boasted  that he will never be broke in life.

At the back of the ticket is a bold inscription : “ This ticket admists one person.” The development, described as scandalous by those who got a glimpse of it, is unprecedented in the history of Christianity in Nigeria. In the medieval period, similar scandals led to the break-away of Martin Luther from the Catholic church. This led to the formation of the Protestant  movement.

At that time, Catholic priests were collecting money, known as indulgences, from worshippers before they could confess their sins. These indulgences had become big business in much the same way pledge drives have become big business in Nigeria. The development outraged Luther and others who kicked against it, quit the church and founded the protestant movement.

The latest scandal in Oyakhilome’s church comes only weeks after he appeared before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to answer questions  on money laundering allegations. According to TheNews magazine edition of 13 December 2010, the alleged laundering of $35 million by Christ Embassy was traced by the Economic and Financial  Crimes Commission with the help of foreign partners.

The magazine reported that Oyakhilome and money have had a bitter-sweet relationship. While money has brought  him a lush lifestyle: an eye-popping auto  collection, a movie-star wardrobe of  stylish suits and choice properties that include a stunning church auditorium, it  has also brought him an arm-long  list of scandals.

Mmmm, wherever there's demand for a product; the 'seller' can choose to charge the buyers any price.
In this case 'product' = pastor's message and 'buyers' = worshippers.
It really is up to the worshippers to decide if the product is worth the charge.
If not, they have the option of moving to another church!

i'm sure that story is exaggerated a bit.

You've got to be kidding! So many false prophets!!!

Sick.....just sick. Why don't they make adequate preparation? Jesus never turned away anybody because he didn't have money. This is the end for me and this church. The actions of her leadership is an insult to what Jesus stands for

churches have to be "funded" somehow abi now?

Classic case of extortion. Oh well, nigerians are too foolish to tell the difference between good and bad. I'd rather spend my money in a night club on new year's eve than spend my money in a place i know ought to be free. I once loved and respected this man but now i'm appalled. I guess we all know now that the miracles were theatrics to get more members. Yes i am judging and would stand by my words even if some spokesass comes to switch things up

i'm a christian but i have boycotted churches. i'm going church-hunting now...ppl have suggested deeperlife church, foursquare gospel, 7th-day adventis, lord's chosen, even jehovah's witness (apparently these churches have strict and concrete doctrines that r essential)...i don't even know where to turn to...thr church is a let down..most churches today r all about enjoyment...i know religion should not be boring but it also shouldn't be that easy. can u imagine going to church and also doubting the existence of God...that's how bad it's gotten for me cuz i never hear anything about heaven anymore..it's always about money and earthly rubbish.and people even size tehmselves up in church. church is now a business..shud be on the stock market...rubbish...

I’ve never been a fan of Christ Embassy and this move makes me dislike the Pastor more. Even when i look at him, there’s something evil lurking behind. I don’t blame the Pastor/church, i blame the sheeple! They have fallen for this ish and are too hypnotised to realise what’s going on.

Nigerian Film and TV addict, stay away from the Lord’s Chosen. Pastor Mouka is another one that has hypnotised his followers and i hear he worships something else at night. I have an Uncle there who is so lost!

I left the conventional Church and went to MFM. I walked in there 5 years ago and i’m still there. It’s everything i wanted in a Pentecostal church. Also, i look up to God and not my Pastor or my GO even though i’m in awe of them. We need to open our eyes and also read our Bibles if not we’ll be misled.

Jesus Christ offered his services for free so why must we pay a Man of God or rather “God of man?”

I think we should watch what we say or write. There is a bigger auditorium still under construction. They knew alot of pple were going to be around that night, they decided to do the ticket to raise money for the completion. Point of correction, it was optional and those that did not have the capacity to buy ticket were not sent back. And am sure they do this in our individual churches too. May God forgive us. Pls note that i am not a member of the church but thou shall not judge says the Lord.

the poor person's soul who was turned away at the gate is just as valuable as the pastor/elders that couldn't get seats in the year before. na real wa! no wonder Jesus said that on That Day the first will be last and the last will be first.

please tell me which is more important to you: that the place is so densely populated, with some discomfort, but everyone gets in and is blessed by your ministration (which should be your primary aim) or a select few are very comfortable, whilst the rest miss out on your ministration. i mean, for someone who truly has a passion for what he does and that passion is what truly drives him from somewhere deep inside, the answer to this wouldn't be so far-fetched. like somebody pointed out, Jesus never turned anyone back cos it was too packed. no, He would preach even in the open, by the seaside, wherever He could find. He didn't wait for the flashiest air-conditioned auditorium before He could preach. and remember the crippled man? the place where Jesus was was that packed that they couldn't even get in, they had to let the man down through the roof. but Jesus didn't call security on the people who brought them. no. He attended to him like a very special person, like we all our. please let Jesus be our role-model.

things like this really break my heart. my people can be so blind. or humans in general sha. it is bad enough that something like this was proposed, but i find it even more heart-wrenching that a good 25,000 people didn't see something wrong with this. or well, maybe they did but really wanted to get in, who knows? all i know is that we should set our hearts and desires on higher goals beyond the material.

I used to go to a 20,000 capacity church but all i heard in the church was preachings dat does not offend the congregation. It was all about money, money, money, money success. Whatever happened to preaching about sins, hell fire, God's punishment, and so on. He always made jokes all the time that got his congregation laughing all the time. I might as well go to a comedy show. My fiance introduced me to this church with just 30 people. The word of God is preached in a loving way and in a way that does not sweet talk the members so that they know that the Bible is for real not just a form of comedy. May God help us all because the end days are so close.

2 Peter 2

1But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

2And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.

3And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

1 Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils

@anon 11.43PM... the catholic institution is one of the most corrupt in the world...that's why my parents changed to pentecostal.go to that catholic church in falomo,ikoyi..it's worse than what u see in pentecostal churches (hypocrisy, corruption, fashion, wealth, power).how many 'knights' are actually poor? it's always the rich, corrupt, sinful businessmen and politicians..my friends will do nasty things and everytime they'll go for confession...why do you confess every week...i don't understand some rules in the catholic and anglican churches too.the best thing is to serve God according to the scriptures not what a pastor, priest says.

Oh, wow!
This is saddening! EVERYONE should have the right to go into a church! The story about being too many people sounds really dumb!
I try to refrain from criticizing church practices but this is outrageous, and I had to leave this comment.
If the senior pastors want seats, seats, should be reserved for them.
I can only hope that this story is exaggerated as someone said.

this story must be exaggerated because it was free to watch the new years service live online
Even when Pastor Chris came to the O2 arena in london (which is the world's biggest arena, the same one michael jackson was suppose to use) We didnt even have to pay anything.

Please Linda, this advert stuff is making ur blog so stressful and uninteresting! Please do something about it! This thing pos up every minute. it's so tiring! Haba.

Never did like the looks of this pastor, he's just ultra slick but far be it from me to speak against the supposed anointed one of the Lord, we shall find out soon enough who be who when God's time done land so carry on oga Pastor. This is sometimes I just read my bible at home and communicate with my God in the privacy of my own home. Yes, it is good and advisable to fellowship with the people of God but things like this can make a person just throw in the towel.

Something is definitely not right here....its either the story is embellished or something is missing in this story.

It is diappointing that things like this can still happen in christian circles. If soul winning is the ultimate goal of these cheats parading themselves as pastors then that service would have been made for non members and advice their own members to worship at satelite churhes in their vicinity. There is no justfication for such acts by every standard and too bad nothing can be done than just allow God through his son Jesus to expose such persons that are taking advantage of the gullibility of followers. God help us."Chis Embassy"

i think this story is highly exaggerated...as times without number they have shown they are big enough to do anything....have been to the auditorium before..you shld see the rush when all is allowed in..and besides there are about 5 veiwing centers in that area....

Anonymous said...

I don't know if this is true or not, so, please, don't quote me. I heard there is high demand and shortage of Vaseline and vegetable oil in Nigeria. I was told prices have gone through the roof due to excessive use of Vaseline and vegetable oil on the hair by male members of Christ Embassy Church. Is it true?

Anonymous said...

Some people are so stupid. Whether or not people paid to enter the auditorium is not anyone's business as long as those that paid aren't complaining. So why are you complaining because of just N1000 that some of you or your loved ones spend on alcohol? Hypocrites! I think PM News should start practicing journalism and not sensational mediocrity!

My dear even if it's true what dose pastor Chris want to use the money for if not the work of God That man is made for life even before the ministry

Unknown said...

Wisdom is profitable to the wise . I quote u by ur own words 'preaching that doesn't offend the congregation does preaching about money not offend the congregation as it were u r one of the congregation members that took offence . I listen to that pastors preaching and there's no time he does not lay emphasis on the life of Christ the Holy Spirit the kingdom of heaven and the doom of hell ...pls if u have time look for the message tittled THE MAN THE MESSAGE AND THE MANDATE Except the issue is with you then you need to search yourself and tell yourself the truth Y are those that attend the church prospering or do they all cheet people to get there ? Do only reason u will complain is not because anybody if forcing u to give is cos u are too tight handed to release then u start complaining u start looking for faults u start comparing .... But ask ur self what was Jesus like study your bible very well even Jesus hid from multitudes in some places he never took d positions of his disciples likely.... Think about these words and I pray you find wisdom
