One in three South African men admit to rape, survey finds

South African survey in province of Gauteng finds 37.4% of men confessing to rape, while 25.3% of women say they are victims.

Researchers found that more than three in four men said they had perpetrated violence against women.
Nearly nine in 10 men believe that a woman should obey her husband – and almost six in 10 women also agreed with the statement.

South Africa has one of the highest rates of rape in the world. The survey questioned 511 women and 487 men, of whom 90% were black and 10% white.

Some 53.9% of men and 29.8% of women agreed that "a man should have the final say in all family matters", while 37.3% of men and 23.2% of women supported the view that "a woman needs her husband's permission to do paid work".

Asked about sexual entitlement in marriage, only 55% of both men and women said they thought "it is possible for a woman to be raped by her husband". Some 38.7% of men and 29.3% of women thought that "a woman cannot refuse to have sex with her husband" and 22.3% of men and 8.8% of women felt that "if a wife does something wrong, her husband has the right to punish her".

The survey also found that 32% of men and women agreed that "in any rape case, one would have to question whether the victim is promiscuous", while 20.1% of men and 15.6% of women said that "in some rape cases, women want it to happen".

This people are on a different level..but most African countries have an issue with oppressing women..so many rapes and beatings..
Beatings have always been there but this rape is on a whole different level..
How can we progress..other ethnicities people learnt this quick..women can bring something to the plate as well..and now form a healthy part of the working population bringing in top $$$

I'm not really surprised by these statistics. I do feel that most African men dont respect women.
Unfortunately, most African husbands see sex as their right and the wife as theirv property.
Will this change anytime soon, I wonder?

I doubt those numbers would differ much in any other civilized society (if folks choose to come clean).

Date rape is rape, and that's what accounts for most rapes.

When a woman says "no", how many guys actually believe it means "no", many guys believe it means "maybe" and some believe it actually means "yes"...

Now brutal rape is another story....

i agree a hundred percent with 9jaLife. these numbers are unfortunately the same or closely the same in every part of the world. men do not have respect for women. take the case of Margret Thatcher, she was kicked out because the men were threatened by her, america as developed as it is still struggles with sexism. women are raped every minute and second in america, in Nigeria, UK, SA name it. it happens everywhere with this startling statistics and the most unfortunate thing is that when women fight for their rights they are quick to be labelled feminists by the women. the problem is just the standard of society which is solely based on the fact that "no matter how much a woman achieves she will forever hold a bucket behind men."
