19-year-old Kika Onyibe, a Law student at Birmingham University, UK, passed away on Wednesday, April 12th, during a surgery for ruptured appendix in a Lagos hospital. It was gathered that she died due to complications from the surgery. According to her boyfriend, Emmanuel Ayoola, she had traveled to Nigeria from the UK to receive treatment for what she thought was an infection but ended up being a ruptured appendix..
Responding to her mother's question on whether she was scared, just before she went in for the surgery, Kika said:

"No, I'm at peace. I know we're I'm going if I don't come out and I will be with Jesus"
Meanwhile, heartwarming tributes have been pouring in for Kika. Friends, family, boyfriend, colleagues led tributes for her on social media. All spoke of her kindness, generosity and warmth.  Her Remains will be laid to rest at Ikoyi cemetery on Tuesday 18th of April 2017. Her boyfriend, Emmanuel Ayoola wrote:

Making heaven is what matters at the end of the day, not how long we lived on earth but that we finally rested in Christ Jesus. May her beautiful soul continue to RIP. This is a lesson for the living.

What I'm I missing here?? She was in UK. She got sick. She travels to WHERE to get treatment. Can somebody help explain this to me??
When Buhari is going abroad to get treatment she is coming back to Nigeria.
It didn't have to end like this. May her soul rest in peace.

My thoughts exactly, she flew from London to receive treatment in Nigeria. Odikwa egwu, ordinary appendix in 2017 still killing people here. This country is doomed. All these witchcraft doctors will not locate us Gods children in Jesus name. AMEN

Exactly the question I asked myself...from Uk to Nigeria for medical treatment? Sadly it was a fatal decision.

I kept waiting to read the part of why she would leave the UK to go to Nigeria for her treatment. It's mind boggling, unless you're talking about attending a church for some kind of deliverance in Nigeria. Anyway regardless it's very sad and hope her family can bear the loss. RIP to her.

The sad question is why did she go for surgery in Nigeria if she was from here....don't make sense

The story was unclear? Why did she not undergo surgery in England and why travel to Nigeria for surgery in the first place? People don't die for that type of surgery in UK, they hardly die...

Anonymous said...

She probably died ignorantly! Going to Nigeria for surgery was a big mistake! R.I.P. UK has better medical facilities.

From the story, she was a student of Birmingham university. Here in the Uk,as a student (be it international or home student) or citizen,You will be under NHS which offers you free medical services.Surgery like Appendix is totally free.Am wondering why she left U.K. To go to Nigeria for surgery.Something is not adding up..It is well.Rip beautiful..

As much as I do not like the social media and in a lot of pain over the passing of a very beautiful soul, I choose to make this comment just to lay to rest the speculations about the decision to come to Nigeria with regards to Kika. Kika was having stomach ache that wouldn't get better even after a visit to her GP in Birmingham and one to the A&E. She was wrongly diagnosed as having food poisoning; NHS if you know well would normally not give give antibiotics as first option of treatment. Based on available information, her parents decided she should come home/Nigeria where we have better access to antibiotics. She was immediately taken to the hospital upon arrival and had a CT scan done, where it was discovered that what she was having was indeed appendicitis and not food poisoning as diagnosed by the NHS but at thIs point it had ruptured and doctors prescribed immediate surgery. The parents wanted to take her back to England for the surgery but doctors advised against it as it was already critical, no one knew for sure how long it had been ruptured. She didn't die during surgery, she died hours post op.
Thank you all for the your kind words and condolences! I'd kindly ask that we're sensitive to the family as laying blame at the parents only hurt some more. The Lord bless you and yours

She traveled to Nigeria because unfortunately the doctors in the UK were unable to give a diagnosis. They didn't know what was wrong with her. Gross negligence on their part.

@To God be the glory, thanks for full explanation therefore it was not the late girl's fault for going to Nigeria because she was allegedly misdiagnosed by a GP in England. The story writer is obviously not a journalist and failed to investigate what led to her death properly, and it also led to assumptions about the late girl! May she RIP besides it could have happened to anybody. Folks! Things don change for Iya Charlie contri o!

RIP beautiful girl.

But wait a minute - left the UK to receive surgery in Nigeria???? There's more to this than meets the eye!

That was too harsh.. God knows Best.. May her soul rest in peace

Pls ruptured appendix needs an exploratory laparotomy which is a major surgery and there can be complications even death. Its different from appendectomy- which is like a minor surgery.

The same Jesus, the son of the living God, who is one with the Father, has granted you Kika, a place in his kingdom for voicing out your desire and trust in him before you expired. Even though a very painful death for your loved ones and those of us still sojourning in this world, for you, God knows that there could not have been a better time to die than when you did. Requiscat In Pacem.

Knowing she was coming for a surgery of some stuff in Nigeria which will be around Easter holiday which probably is usually celebrated in Nigeria with her folks. For me doing surgery where families and friends will be around to care for her after the surgery could have been the unanimous reason why Nigeria was the perfect place ahead of UK. In any case whatever will go wrong will go wrong. Who knows, God may just have taken her away from where she was susceptible to sinning and draw her close to Him before calling her home.My brothers and sisters, no leave drops from the tree without God's knowledge. Kika left at the time she was predestined to depart. I believe she's in a better place now, it is well with her soul. R.I.P Kika.

RIP beautiful one. It just feels like I know her. A priceless jewel. May God console the family.

Please whether Nigeria or abroad, don't fail to scrutinize prescribed medicine and the doctor who prescribed it. God made both doctors in Nigeria and abroad. God alone heals while doctors cure. Don't be over confident with the doctors abroad. Sometimes, they give wrong diagnosis and are not perfect too. Most of us nigerians are ignorant, not an insult though. We believe everything abroad is perfect, far from that.

Hello , i know her personally and the UK doctors DID NOT ATTEND TO HER PROPERLY! . Our Nigerian Doctors found out the cause of illness within ONE DAY . The UK doctors kept sending her up and down for 8MONTHS . They are the ones that delayed her treatment ; if the Uk doctors treated her earlier she would be here today !
HAVE FAITH IN YOUR COUNTRY PLEASE ! And respect the family !

REST IN PEACE DEAREST SIS AND TO THOSE OF US WHO DOES NOT HAVE FAITH IN OUR BELOVED COUNTRY GOD HELP US,D YOUNG LADY DIED DUE TO D NEGLIGENCE OF D DOCTORS IN D UK, SHE HAS BEEN HAVING PAINS FOR MONTHS AND THEY COULD NOT FIND OUT WHAT WAS WRONG WITH HER AND WERE JUST GIVING PAIN KILLERS BUT D DOCTORS HERE IN NIGERIA WERE ABLE TO KNOW WHAT D PROBLEM IS IMMEDIATELY SHE GOT TO NIGERIA. IT IS UNFORTUNATE DAT SHE DIED AFTER THE SURGERY BUT I BELIEVE D APPENDICES HAS RUTURE FOR A WHILE AND HAS EVEN BEEN INFECTED BUT ALL IN ALL WE GIVE GOD D GLORY FOR A LIFE WELL SPENT.

Reading all these comments I'm disgusted how I'll minded you all are, I'm a student in the Uk and to receive treatment here is damn near impossible. Some of the local hospitals won't attend to you, or if you have an infection they blame it on stress or something else. They never look at the deep problems like right now I need to get my teeth removed because my wisdom tooth is growing, though I have been to several doctors they keep giving excuses to why I can't get it removed the best option is to obviously go back to Nigeria. So as you can see Kika obviously visited the uk GP multiple times but they didn't want to look for the bigger picture, they didn't take the matter seriously and maybe just blamed it on stress or an infection which can be cured using antibiotics. You people should stop judging things you don't know about just because it's the Uk doesn't mean their health care is the ultimate
