Oh my! Water enters homes in VGC after heavy rain (photos)

This is inside a home in VGC, Lagos after 2 days of heavy downpour. OMG! The LIB reader who sent in the photos, wrote;
"I am a grieved resident of Road 12 at Victoria Garden City. We have been having flooding issues for over 5 years now. It keeps getting worse each year and after several complaints the estate management are still turning deaf ears on us. On Saturday June 20th, we experienced the worst. The entire first floor of my house has been wrecked. Please post the attached pictures to appeal to the estate management to sort out the drainage issues, especially on road 12. Its a shame for someone to say they live in VGC and yet be going through this." See more photos after the cut..

Not much can be done.irrespective of how much is paid,Lagos is sitting on a coastline.

And for every area that's raised ie increasing the floor level eg ongoing work on akin adesola vi,the water will find its way to other areas that are on lower ground.last year surulere bungalows had to practically move out in some areas.

Also,a lot of people have built on drainages.lagos from inception did not have a master plan.yaba floods badly so its not about the island only.its a state issue and I think Maryland is the highest point in Lagos and not prone to flood.

We are on the edges of the Atlantic coast.I pray for us everyday in Lagos

STUPID NIGERIA

WE BUILT A FULL HOUSE OF CARDS, HOW CAN WE BE INVESTING BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN PROPERTY IN A FLOOD PLAIN/BASIN BASED ON TREND WITHOUT TAKING THE NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS TO AVOID THIS SCENARIO. IT WILL TAKE A LOT OF CO-OPERATION, DISCIPLINE AND SACRRIFICE NOT TO MENTION INVESTMENT BY A COMPETENT GOVERNMENT AND PEOPLE TO PREVENT THE IMPENDING DOOM.

TILL WE GET OUR ACT TOGETHER AND MANAGE OURSELVES AS OURSELVES, EMBRACING AND RESPECTING OUR LOCAL ENVIRONMENT, THIS WILL REMAIN OUR ETERNAL REALITY.

TO GIVE ANYONE AN IDEA WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE FUTURE, LOOK AT CHEVRON'S NEW DEVELOPMENT OPPOSITE CHEVRON ROUNDABOUT AND SEE HOW MANY METRES ABOVE SEA LEVEL THE ENTIRE TRACT WAS RAISED. THIS IS WHAT IT WILL TAKE TO LITERALLY STAY ABOVE WATER IN THE DECADES TO COME IN THAT AREA.

THIS IS THE SAD TRUTH.

Tips to flood management in Nigeria.
1. Stop the sale of satchet water.
2. Stop the indiscriminate disposal of rubbish.
3. Employ proper waste management techniques.
4. Stiff penalties for defaulters of laws prohibiting indiscriminate disposal of dirt.
5. Building, enhancing drainage networks in the country.
These measures won't cost millions and wouldn't take years, just six months and these flooding would stop.

This is the problem with Nigeria, Many ex-ministers and well heeled people of influence live on this estate, even the vice president lives here but as you will notice in Ikoyi, V/i etc, they all turn a blind eye to the slum conditions of their immediate environments while putting up million dollar structures, so long as they are comfortable inside their homes. It's a Nigerian problem, we are inherently self focused and myopic.

My question is if these people of influence cannot fix their own immediate external environments, how can these same people be trusted to sort out the problems of Nigeria?

The real change required is in the Pysche of us Nigerians, nobody from Aso rock is going to change your lot, when residents cant even organise themselves on a local level to fix their own immediate environment.

Nigerians have refused to educate themselves on the scale and impact of global warming. Everyone wants to live on the island because it's ebeano, when the rains pour and when the sea level rises all of una go hear word. In a city like Lagos, with poor urban planning, living on the mainland is not a bad idea. Won't be moving to Lagos anytime soon, Abuja might be hot as hell but shid, we don't have these kinds of problems. Sorry o, don't wait for the estate management, take action now.

Nigerians just like to gloat over another's misfortune. Think of how you can make money by way of how to reduce the floods in all these water prone areas instead of mocking those who live on the island. It is called poor man's mentality. Lagos is generally prone to floods. It can be an opportunity for people to hammer and move to Banana Island instead of laughing at others misfortune. Living in VGC is still better than many places on the mainland brimming with filth, touts and insecurity.

Sad that local government is not in charge of drainage in Nigeria. THis is a public good - sanitation, safety. It is a public good. A private company should not be given the due function of government. GOvernment taxes are meant to rectify these issues. Nigeria is such a wicked country. I guess this is one of Fashola's achievements - completely shirking the public safety and welfare function of the government and handing it off to private developers. Lagosians, ask Ambode to change this. Can you imagine the flora in sewage from soakaway pits with people who have all kids of diseases now becoming part of this person's ground floor? It could be you next.
