Photos: 100 year old Mushin market demolished

The market that has been in existence for over one hundred years was yesterday demolished by the Lagos state government via the Mushin Local Council. The government is planning to build an ultra-modern market in its place.

The traders at the Mushin Ajina market, who were given two weeks notice in early September to vacate the market, protested for several weeks because they knew they may not be able to afford rent for the new market structure.

Misplaced priorities.....

Why on earth would someone wake up one day and destroy what has been in existence for a Century?

Why do we keep piling up more misery on Nigerians, the same Nigerians who voted for these poliTRICKtians?

Why do we love seeing people suffer in this part of the World? Naija ought to be a planet, and just exists alone...To say am appalled about this news is an understatement, because you cant just take people's means of livelihood away just like that, FFS without providing alternative sources for them...

Am quite sure some of our Lagos PoliTRICKcian's parents at a point in their lives, patronized this same market and fed the beasts that we have now....God bless Nigeria..

Nigerians will never cease to amaze me. Without doubt, we are the most insatiable people on earth. If the story had been that a child died of say typhoid or even malaria in the market, we would bash the government for not improving the place in a hundred years. Now govt. wants to improve the market pple dey complain too, na wa o! I remember shouts during the cleansing of oshodi too, now looking back, who in their right senses would pick the oshodi of old over the new one? Forget what those traders say about being able to afford the new rent or not, they are all sentiment seeking con-Nigerians they make serious money in that old market. Development doesn't come cheap, let's stop clamoring for improvements if we are not prepared to pay the price for it.

hiss said...

This is very wrong. Those people are not that wealthy to afford new age stores. I think they went overboard with this one. I hope this lagos politicians are not creating monsters they wont be able to control o. When all these petty traders are out of work and become a nuisance and start stealing, dont say i didnt talk my own

wrong wrong and wrong on all fronts. yes we want orderliness but when they build these new structures how affordable can they possibly be. this govt probably just caused several people tears and rendered children hungry. hopefully their tears and/or blood will not be on you the leaders and your generations head

DON'T BLAME FASHOLA FOR HIS GOOD DID, PLS.
WE NIGERIANS OBVIOUSLY DON'T WANT A GOOD COUNTRY FOR OURSELVES - FROM THE COMMENTS ABOVE. IF WE HAVE POOR STANDARDS, AND THERE IS THIS 'MESSIAH' TRYING TO HELP US OUT, WHY SHOULD WE COMPLAIN? WE ALL RUN TO LONDON/ USA EVERYDAY IN SEARCH OF BETTER STANDARDS (YES WHETHER TO LIVE THERE, TO SCHOOL, TO SHOP, OR JUST FOR HOLIDAY).
NOTHING GOOD COMES EASY. THESE OYINBO PEOPLE TOO WENT THROUGH SIMILAR PROCESSES WHEN THEY WERE DEVELOPING THEIR COUNTRIES.
WHY SHOULD YOU LEAVE A DERELICT AND DIRTY MARKET ALONE? NIGERIANS ARE PERHAPS AS RETARD AS NOT REALIZING THAT 'MARKET' AND 'FILTH/POOR STANDARDS' ARE NOT SYNONYMS. LET FASHOLA DO WHAT HE GOTTA DO. MY ONLY OBJECTION IS THE FACT THAT A PLACE TO CARRY OUT BUSINESS FOR THE DISPOSSESSED MARKET WOMEN IN THE MEAN TIME HAS NOT BEEN PERHAPS DISCUSSED.

how can a government destroy a market that has stood for 100yrs, we barely have any history to start with (not talking about texts)....d solution to everything isn't destruction how about 'redevelopment' which doesn't necessarily mean starting again...it is so sad that we have a myopic developers in Nigeria that destroy everything to make way for the rich.. did anyone consider where these people would go? we all want a better Lagos, 'better lagos' in this direction is making the poor poorer, is our definition of better living enriching lives or having 'nice to look at' scenery....individuals make a place not the structures. i feel terribly sorry for people affected by this

Anonymous said...

Thanks for 'highlighting' this.

Fashola is wicked to the marrow. New market yes, but not at the expense of driving away poor traders. Now, only rich traders can invest their business there. Oh no!

The governor may be trying to put up a better structure. Nigerians, we want development but dont wqnt the process no be magic na, Fashola must step on peoples toes to clean lagos

We just created a new wave of armed robbery incidents. That is what displaced folks with no recourse do. THey rob those they purport to be wealthy in order to survive. I pray the Lagos state govt made effort to take a census of the traders so that they can be reasonably accomodated in the new structure.

at least thank GOD dey didnot set this one on fire like dey did to oshodi and tejuosho. claiming it was unknown fire. has yaba being completed? yet they are demolishing anoda one. why must it be the poor masses dat mostly suffer for the so-called change? when the so-called ultra modern is built, dey wont be able to afford and eventually its the rich peeps dat wud take the shops. all of you saying dis is the rite thing to do, may u not xperience what it feels like to have your source of livelihood taken away from you just like what happened to mushin traders. even if fashola wants to build ultra modern market, what provision and compensation has he made for dese innocent peeps whose shops have been demolished. I live in london and i know dat when govt wants to sudden change, they have a way of compensating the peeps. in naija, tell me how the crime rate wud not increase wen many peeps are out of jobs, shops demolished, and even the gala and lacasera boys are off the streets. Mega city is not just abt having a beautiful city, it also goes as far empowering the peeps and making dem comfortable enuf to reduce the rate of crime and armed robbery.
oya fashola advocates, start abusing me. am listening to you.

U are very very senseless! Fool of d heights.

omoibo said...

Another part of our history gone, no thanks to the short sightedness displayed by the Lagos state government! Sure, change is good but common sense needs to be applied too! An ultra modern market ca be built anywhere in Lagos but history once lost is never replaced in my opinion, we as a people need to do a better job preserving our history before we're left without none!

@Anon 1.58... Who tell u say dem no de sell fresh tomatoes n pepper at Ultra Modern Markets dese days? Come to the Ultra Modern Market in my estate here in abuja n see "local modernization". I'm talkin bout packaged pepper, tomatoes, okro sef dey, all sold in small bowls......If u want basket gan, nuffin do u........ and d prices r way too affordable to resist.......

Development comes with pain, since the society cannot attain a pareto optimality in this case, the best line of action from d lagos state government to the displaced trader is to resettle them in another market,if this can be done then a welfare gain as been acheived.

Do you think the England you see today was made that way by God? It was not that way by magic it was made that way by human beings who paid the price centuries ago and the generations they made are reaping the benefits. Please lose the sentiments oh. How many Nigerians pay tax? Yet we want to complain. Everything good doesn't just happen it started from somewhere. Pay the price now and reap the benefits. As a matter of fact I wish fashola still has 8 more yrs as governor I know lagos will be like a Mini London wen he is thru. Those ppl u think are poor are even the first to cheat u when patronising them. Pls we need a total image overhaul in this Nigeria.

God can only judge him if he uses that place for another purpose other than what he promised it will be for. You can also tell the past rulers of England and America alike that God will judge them for making their country better abi you no know na mere man wey make those places the.wey e dey na. May God judge you according to your stupidity.

Pipo r difficult Ï„☺ adapt Ï„☺ changes..... U all r saying ÊŠ want Naija to look like uk if old structures r not modernised, how can dat be?

Ujunwa said...

Oya they shouldbe selling their mkt in a pigs sty and when u go there you wouldlime to cover your nose. Please stop being foolish and realise that the fact that a mkt has stood for over a 100yrs doesn't mean it's meant to be there. The fact that it has been there for over a hundred years is what calls for its demolition because it's foundations may not be able to withstand any kind of development abi ur redevelopment. If they redevelop it the way u want them to and it collapses because the foundations are weak shey you go still cal govt names. We pay the price to reap the Benefits stop being an unthinking individual and use ur head not ur heart to think.

Ujunwa said...

I really applaud your comment although I will not obeject to his decision bcos he made no provisional place for these mkt ppl although it does call for concern but the nigerian women I know will still carry on their businesses. However, I love your thinking.

Anonymous said...

Please go and siddon.... D oshodi u mentioned, have you been to the so-called ultra modern market? How many people can afford the rent they demand there? D market is so expensive! Most of the shops have remained vacant since inception... the few people who rented shops there now buy inferior goods, and hike the price terribly. In advanced worlds, people will fight him. Fashola is becoming a bully....he's trading off what should ordinarily be an historic destination that holds deep values to many, for the satisfaction of a few property developers. I don't think ACN will win in this lagos again sha.

Anonymous said...

I hope people with soon understand that there is a price to pay for good things. We want what they have abroad but do not want the pains.

I hope the govt. will also make palliatives available for the masses too.

Anonymous said...

Fashola is arguably the best governor in Nigeria, he may have his excesses though. people should understand that it will cost him a lot less to leave the market the way it was. So his doing this is in a bid to make things better.

Anonymous said...

Some pple are talking about the age of the market as if its supposed to be a relic. Several markets older than that have been demolished and rebuilt in the developed countries (romford market is an eg). Today we all appreciate what was done then

Anonymous said...

When Oshodi was restructured a lot of pple were unhappy, today we all laud that decision. I hope we will learn one day.

To the foolish people that say "they should have left the structure alone" where the f*ck are your brains? Do you shop in that market? Have you seen the condition of that market? Do u know how many thugs live in that market? Do you not want change for your country, your city? Stop being hypocrites! This governer can only do things one step at a time. He is not God and not perfect but just the little he has done, has gone a long way.for how long will we continue to live in squallow? How long will Nigeria be considered a jungle? We are what we eat, the way we treat ourselves, is the way outsiders will treat us! If u surround urself with filth others will treat u like filth! What u should be fighting for, is that when the new structure is built that the government should make it affordable, that they should allow payment plans for the people that want to work hard for their money and not stealing or robbing. If you like stay stagnate!!

Do you really think the money spent for the re-structuring is derived from the govt coffers? Smh..... He's destroying peoples means of livelihood and giving their lands to property developers (prolly owned by tinubu). Eg d lekki-epe exp way, oshodi ultra modern market, yaba.... Etc. The shops in d oshodi mall costs over a million to rent. In my area, he kicked out a group of indigenous dwellers, and property developers took over, built estates of 3 bedroom flats (3 storey)..... Each flat costs 17-20 million naira. The buildings in that estate has been there for 3 years and counting, and no one has bought any cos they are afraid they'll be the only ones to buy, and will be attacked by robbers. The developers determine the price that will be demanded of the masses.

Fashola is starting to show his wicked traits in full blare. Smh..... Most of u in support of this evil, maybe he hasn't valued ur house for landuse charge @ 150 million naira when the house is actually not more than 40 mill.

Ujunwa said...

Read what you wrote then read it slowly then read it again but this time use ur brain. OMG this is the height of the definition of educated fool. So if your grandmother is alive how old is she ok let me use ur great grand mother now how old would she have been. So to you independence means the day a huge land mass was discovered and some ppl were dumped on it thus the country now known as nigeria was born. Hmmmm I fear for my country sha.

Well said! Historic destination. Wiped out!

Ujunwa said...

Your comment had me laughing seriously that's a good joke you cracked there. Another part of our history gone Oh my goodness. Why didn't you carry the old oshodi market to a museum so you can tell your great grand kids all about it. Idiot so when you ply on good roads you don't consider it history wiped away that the tarred road you ply on was once a forest. Gosh I know i'm not a 1st class material but some ppl actually make me happy for my level of intelligence.

Ujunwa said...

So would your opinion be different if fire guttedthe homes of these ppl thus taking away all they have. I'm sorry even with the market in existence we still hv armed robbers. I'm sorry but it seems to me you just justified armed robbery. It is only their place of business that was taken away. They still hv there goods so I really fail to see ur point. You leave in London but hv u ever tried to study their history? Or did u think something similar or much worse didn't happen for London to be the way it is now? Please just dress back.

You sound foolish!how can ur grand father or mother be 89 wen nigeria is 52?

Anonymous said...

Fashola mainly cares about the beauty of lag than the actual shit going on that jam packed humid place. Typical Nigerian politicians. Jobless thieves who will rather focus on the wrong things. They don't understand their roles. Heaux!

Create more jobs for people who cannot own their own businesses. Do more important things for the Lagos residents.

The market is also a historic place, how the fuck do you completely demolish it? You can fix some problems to make it look cleaner while it still maintains some of its original structure. But fuck no! these political bush rats in all their dumb glory will rather erase history and build the same ol' shit.

Nigerian leaders are useless!

Anonymous said...

Some of you should drop out school because you arent learning shit! Dumb people

I don't even blame some of the bumb commenters when your history syllabus consists of false stories, and praises to that European motherfucker, Lugard and the other white criminals who came to your country to give you mirrors, steal from you, fuck up our mindset and erase important aspects of our history.

Now, your leader is doing the same and you bitches are saying change is good. Just like someone said, you can redevelop but not to the extent that people can no longer work and eat and then our history is gone forever.

You people really need to sit down and think. All the unnecessary degrees aint shit if you cannot think outside the fucking textbook created by the white man

Ujunwa said...

Well thank God you are not the Governor of lagos state because I can already tell what filth lagos of now will look like under your govt. To you now you made sense. Linda why u no post my original reply na. I dey vex small sha.

So because the new age stores mat not come cheap we the market should Remain a dump forever. You myt want to look at the pictures and see if you wanna change ur way of thinking. So demolished now equals confiscated merchandise I just fail to see how their means of livelihood was taken away bcos i'm certain they still hv their goods with them. Please think before commenting abeg. So they should keep carrying on their biz in a pig sty abi? Ok oh letter we want to eradicate poverty wen even our thinking is extremely poor myself not inclusive tho. Kmt.

It is not enough to openly demolish an existing structure with the intentions that the newly built was done by the present administration as yet, another demolition comes with another administration, EXAMPLE:Form.GOV.LATIF JAKUNDE's - Olaleye Ultra Modern market at Apapa Road, even as nothing has been done on the now turned forest land, e.t.c.
Furthermore, sending people to jail while helping them to plant flowers on their premisses does not make any State or even local government a MEGA-NONSENSE.
