Lagos State Government sack all striking doctors

I'm sure you all know that doctors in Lagos State have been on strike for a while now (Since April 24th). Their reason? They want an increase in salary and a downward review of taxes, among other things. Well, today Monday May 7th, the Lagos State Government announced the sack of over 1, 000 striking doctors in its employ. The government has already started recruiting new doctors to replace the sacked ones.

Is sacking them the way forward? Please share your thoughts

is this a joke???????

This is not the solution, surely. Fashola should be more creative than this.

Anonymous said...

This is not fair. Who can try this with assu? Most strikes are called on by union leaders, as a result of demands based on thorough investigation of the system. Mr fashola, you no try o at all.

U guys are jokers just like BRF. Where will U̶̲̥̅̊ get 1000 doctors of different cadres Απϑ specialties, willing to collect that nonsense salary.
Better go to Private Hospital Απϑ pay through your eyeballs. The Govt has just stylishly privatised healthcare. Na the citizens go lose oh.
Instead of lagosians to come out to the street Απϑ show solidarity with the Doctors.

So,the government refuses †̥ pay the salary agreed upon since 2009 and then issues queries and sack letters because a warning strike was embarked upon. Then the idiot person above is saying its deserved? May ur generation suffer unemployment! Stupid buffoon.wait till yu hv a child who is a dr. Do yu even know what d hippocratic oath says? When it comes todoctors everyone wants †̥ be a connoisseur of knowledge.do I come †̥ dictate †̥ Ʋ in ur own profession?

I support this to the T! Like seriously, what the heck are they thinking? They know the impact of their 5mins absence in the larger society, not to talk of days of off-service. Include to my irritation their non-attendance to 'ER' patients.

All theses idiots supporting Fashola, U people r crazy. Doctors do not have the mandate of the electorate to provide amenities of which health is one. THE STUPID GOVERNMENT DOES!!! una nor dey try. Everytime ppl strike, u want to "appeal to them. Y cant u appeal to the government instead?"

Fola said...

I support, that is the kind of action Nigerians need. If Jonah can be like this, everyone would seat up! Rubbish. People are dying by the minute. Some of these Doctors are so arrogant and act as if they are doing you a favour especially that hopeless dirty LUTH. Visited a relative their once, you need to see how the baby doctor spoke to patients and those nurses are pathetic, Gosh!

Anonymous said...

Linda, wrong picture.. this is LUTH, not LASUTH. LUTH is not Lagos State.

Before u open ur mouth and condemn doctors,u should investigate thoroughly as to why they are striking, atyms silence to mask ignorance is wisdom in itself....doctors wrk like slaves, putting wrk before family, exposing thmslves to untold health risks, wrk unbelievable hours and get paid rubbish....doctors cnt send their kids to good skls, afford decent accomodation, buy decent cars...u need to be in the system to understand...and wt exctly r they fightn for??....wt was promised them for years nw...its easy to waste money on brthdays...over 1billion wnt for tinubus circus of a bday...and other wastefl ventures,bt wn it cms to doing wt it ryt, they shy away....this is merely a bluff and we see it as such...never in the history of a democracy has ths happened....fashola is a shame to the judicial system as ths is illegal and a disappointmnt to democracy....Dr.F

Fashola is a disgrace. Instead of him to call them for dialogue, he sacks them he and that stupid commissioner for health. Their colleagues at the federal level are taking almost 100% what they are taking and that is the contention, in fact other state hospitals in other states are complying and fashola has refused to comply or even reach a compromise with them. Sacking is not the solution and people want him to be president of Nigeria, una go just impose Hitler on una self. shior!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

ONOME says...........
Oh dear, when a bluff goes wrong:(
He sacked over 1000 drs?ouch:((((

This is so wrong on many fronts.
Doctors should not even go on strike for this long. What happens to the patients?Nigerian health care service is atrocious on many fronts.Arggghhhh.....
What happened to negotiations etc etc? This high handed approach to professionals is really sad.I realise Fashola is their employer and if an employee says he does not like the salary his "oga" is paying him,he should either try negotiations and if it does not work, honourably quit rather than hold the employer to ransom. But sacking them outright?Fashola, noooooooooooo
To study medicine is not beans o.It is expensive and so tasking and demanding. And to receive peanuts as a salary is annoying.More so when some thieves as politicians steal so much.I understand the drs "agros",I really do.Only he who wears the shoe understands the pinch. We are human too and deserve our pay.
Please Fashola have a rethink o.Go back to the negotiation table.Wisdom must be applied here abeg.
Which way Nigeria, which way to go????

it has its pros and cons. but health is nt a sector to be toyed with. is this the best way. mediation is key.

The LASG claims not †̥ be able †̥ pay CONMESS but have employed new medical officers and Α̲̅я̩̥̊ε̲̣̣̣̥ paying them about 280,000 a month, Α̲̅я̩̥̊ε̲̣̣̣̥ even paying theem per hour at a much higher rate than conmess.who Α̲̅я̩̥̊ε̲̣̣̣̥ we kidding? Why didn't FG sack all govt workers when they went on minimum wage strike? Conmess is minimum wage for docs.even d smallest states pay even more for docs who see fewer patients than in lagos state where patient load is much and govt always employs fewer than necessary.putting docs on call everyday for months at a stretch and refuse †̥ pay call duty fees? Is this the NAZI administration?

I am, the no Sender. said...

Now you can see the kind of 'rulers' that run this country. Imagine. Fashola will want to be also seen as a leader? kmt.

Lagos cuts own nose to spite it's face and simply perceives it can just work into an abbatoir and get a human nose for replacement?

Was the State forced into the decisions and agreements it consented to back in 2009 with the now striking doctors?

In meeting this agreement and paying doctors the agreed amount, will it in anyway limit what Emperor glass eyed Tinubu gets monthly from Lagos revenue?

Somebody kindly tell Fashola to eat humble pie and not joke with the lives of Lagosians.

Certainly not the best solution coming from Fash

Have they been attending to patients in critical condition while they were on strike? The blood of all the men, women and children that have died as a result of their greed inclined strike will be on their neck. Fashola, abeg sack every single one of them, they are nothing but killers, probably they must have been bribed by PDP to paid the Lagos State Government in bad light. Are they the only ones in Lagos State that are not well paid? What should the teachers do? When they know that the condition of service is not favorable, why did they applied for the job in the first place? Were they forced to work? If they cannot work under that condition, why don’t they resign and find better jobs elsewhere, why must they take up the slot and at the end allow innocent citizens to die in their dozens because of their own greed? Nigerians are something else.people are dying in hospitals due to one sickness/disease or the other the the doctors are striking on increment of their salary or whatever name it is called…what about their promise to preserve and save lives. Even if they want to protest, striking for such a long time is meaningless and useless especially as lives are involved and there was no guarantee that the Lagos State Government would listen to them….As for our government,my only comment is that they know better…if they could afford the request of the doctors, they should have done it. But then the Nigerian government is not always reliable anyway...NIGERIA is our motherland we should work towards improving it not pulling down the things that are already there

Online Scholarship said...

They should go to their villages and establish hospitals. They will make it. Why the rush to cities? I don't blame fashola. Population in lagos state alone is very alarming.

Sometimes I wonder what 2nd term has done t oFAshola's thinking. So he thinks employing young doctors with little or no experience on locum contracts of N7,000 for 4hrs is the way to replace experienced doctors that he has refused to pay what he agreed with them. Nigeria truly has a poverty of leadership at all levels and Lagos state is no different.

It is quite unfortunate that some pple dnt hve sense, so becos i'm a doctor, so I shld be paid rubbish, wht abt the amount of mny spent getting an education, abi do u guys think its easy to study medicine??? Then ur fake-ass gov. Decides to sack them, becos they stand for wht they believe in, only in naija can dis nonsense happen. Pple that voted u into power!!! Dis doctors hve families as well, they hve responsibilites, Fashola wit all the mny u collect frm taxes, u dnt wnt to pay ur doctors good wages??? I feel sorry for u. All dis politicians think they're mini-gods, Holy ghost fire pursue all of u.

That is d worst idea ever, i hope they dnt go n employ quacks just to prove a point oo, besides what happens if these ones go on strike, just employ another batch abi?? pfff~ abeg!
at this rate every unemployed medical graduate will get a job and lose it within a year.

Those in support of d sack are ignorant fools. To increase dia salary is nt a big deal. Bcous jst graduatin 4rm d medical skul is nt an easy tin.(6 to 8 yrs) Talkless of surgeons. If u tink iz easy, go n read d course n come out wit ur MBBS certificate. I weep bitterly wen I c some politicianz dat didt even finish class six earnin more dan doctors. Infact d trut iz dat Nigeria needs to develop. If u doubt me go to united states n kno d highest paid professions.

This is not the best way but 9ja unions do not know or seem to understand negotiations. They always want things to go their own way regardless. Whilst not the best solution as this may end up costing the state depending on the contracts each doctor has, I am sure some would welcome the move.

Way to go Gov Fashola! I understand someone wanting more pay but it's not every profession that can afford to go on strike, there's got to be another way to get their point accross. Did they even consider the patients b4 they went striking, there's always someone in need of medical help. Biko, for some professions u have to really b in it for what u do, in this case helping people. I know it's tough but that's how the cookie crumbles.

Anonymous said...

Fashola is turning out to be one of the worst governors in Nigeria. Lekki Toll, then this?

Anonymous said...

I am highly disappointed at the uunreasonable action that Fashola is taking and am sure it is because he does not need a second term and for those who know the worth of doctors the person you should blame for killing your family members is Fashola otherwise how do you explain that he agreed to upgrading salaries of the doctors and instead bribes a few and expect others to keep quiet,it is high time we come out to support the doctors.Let them go to egypt & employ killer doctors again.

THIS IS SO WRONG ON ALL LEVELS. YOU PEOPLE SUPPORTING THE SACK, WILL YOU ALLOW THEIR NEWLY EMPLOYED NYSC DOCTORS TO DELIVER YOUR RELATIVES OF A BABY? WILL FASHOLA ALLOW A 'BABY' DOCTOR TREAT HIS WIFE?

I DONT SUPPORT THIS AT ALL! DOCTORS ARE HUMAN BEINGS AND HAVE NEEDS JUST LIKE EVERYONE OF US. IF FASHOLA CAN ALLOCATE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS FOR THEIR CARNIVALS (EYO AND CO), LETS NOT FORGET TINUBU'S BDAY PARTY.... WHY CANT THEY PAY THESE GUYS. WHY AGREE TO PAY THEM SEVERAL YEARS AGO AND UP TILL NOW, HE HASNT DONE SO...

THESE ARE NOT JUST DOCTORS, THEY ARE 'EXPERIENCED' DOCTORS. NOTE, THERE IS A DIFFERENCE. I WONT WANT TO MEET AN NYSC DOCTOR THAT WOULD HAVE TO CONSULT GOOGLE WITH MY SYMPTOMS BEFORE HE/SHE HAS AN IDEA OF WHATS WRONG WITH ME.

THIS IS SO WRONG!!! NO WONDER THE BEST NIGERIAN DOCTORS ON THE PLANET ARE ABROAD...

Paul said...

Fashola, you can do better than this. This is not well thought out. You don't sack striking doctors. You work with them to meet a common ground that will eventually benefit them and their patients.

These Doctors go out of their way all the time especially in a country where proper medical equipments is lacking and the healthcare system is a failed one. Give these doctors what they are asking for, it's not too much compared to what the thieves in the government ask for.

Anonymous said...

This is not a solution o, how good are the new one's? With the old ones self people are still dying and they are supposed to be "the best" abeg o, they sgould re-think am.

this bad move on fashola's side, i thought he had more brain. Lagos can definitely afford to pay the doctors more, but this confirms how corrupt the whole government is. How can he let go of seasoned doctors, for new ones, who knows nothing abt that hospital and its patients.

I see this as a welcomed development....stupid doctors...its the head of people that died as a result of their greed that affected them....all nigerian doctors know now is money money money....saving lives has become a JOB for them. I know of soooooo many really brilliant docs who have concluded their youth service, and after waiting for sometime @ home for jobs, took up employment with private hospitals that pay them no more than 90k....and they gladly accepted cos it beats sitting on their ass all day @ home. All the people who have commented so far in favor of these greedy docs, please tell me; was their pay below 90k? My friends have gladly applied to take their place when the opportunity comes. I know there are more out there. The person that said they can't find 1000 docs...all I have to say to you is that....... E GO SHOCK U!

Sometimes i wonder who advices our gov't official, then i remember that some of the politicians in gov't didnot even graduate from secondary sch!!!

My point is what kindof stupid move is that!!!!!
I have been following this doctors story for a while. The state govt signed an agreement since 2009 and they refused to implement it and here we are castigating the doctor.
Their contemporaries that work in other state (That do not work as much as they do) earns more than ALL LAGOS DOCTORS!!!!
Sometimes i wonder if Nigeria (LAGOS precisely)is still not ruled by the MILLITARY!!!!
Fashola just keep lording himself over citizens.
1st it was the toll gate, now the doctor. it will soon be the whole state.
But really, i dont blame them i blame the citizens that dont know their rights.

Yes, of course it's the right thing. Their medical vow is to first and foremost save lives. Besides there are people who would appreciate the chance to work at all instead of asking for more. Good riddance.

Sacking them isn't the proper approach to this even though the doctors were wrong to have gone on strike in the 1st place. The salary situation should be reviewed. If the Doctors want an increase, then let them have it(@ least 50% of the proportion they're asking for). Its obvious that in nigeria huge sum of money kips going into the wrong places.
My opinion: I ask that this matter be reviewed and the Doctors given a linient penalty.

HE GAVE A WARNING TO BE DELIVERED TO THOSE ABSENT, AND BY THE FOLLOWING WEEK, WHEN WE GOT THERE, THEY WERE ALL ON SEAT BY 8. FUCKING RETARDED PRETENDERS. THIS SERVES THEM RIGHT, BECAUSE NOBODY FORCED THE JOB ON THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE, AND IN MY OPINION, THEY ARE TOO NEGLIGENT TO DEMAND SUCH RAISE.

Atobatele, I think you are very myopic to apportion blame to PDP. This is way beyond political rivalry. Why should the condition of service be unfavourable to public servants in Lagos state, being that Lagos state is one of the states with the highest tax revenue. These funds should be put into such sectors to create a more conducive working environment.
You go further to say they should resign and find better jobs, WHERE????? How many more jobs has Lagos state government provided for the health sector??????
This could all have been avoided if the Lagos state government kept to their promise made in 2009. If they can afford to pay new doctors, why not stick to the 2009 agreement and save everyone the embarrassment.

The 120k they receive is for starters......as they grow, some are paid up to 500k...do you guys have any idea how much such starters are paid in private hospitals? Go and research before you make noise. The jobs in nigeria no be pure water o.....hold on to the one you have till God decide to save us. I know that they were not forced on the job, if they felt cheated, why not resign or take what he was offering? It serves them right. The lives that were lost as a result of this their foolish beef with the government cannot be brought back. Kudos Mr. Fash.

No1 shld come here claiming doctors are trying by doing this and that, thats absolute rubbish. Before you decided to become a doctor you knew all that. And any1 in their clear senses knows that doctors in naij dont make good money except its their own hospital. It is so wrong for you to decide to let pple die in the name of money. Let me tell you, their are some doctors in this world dat give more than they take so biko make i hear word.

Now i dont thing sacking them is the best solution but a strike over two weeks, nna if na me sef i go hire new staff abi i wan make my citizens die. Even the existing doctors still dont do their best. You see them answering calls while in surgery or while a patient is in front of them, its all so annoying. You have to respect yourself b4 anoda can.

Abegi, employ new pple if it has gotten to a 2weeks strike and train the shit out of them.

As far as I am concerned Fashola is taking all the right decisions here. As for all you ignorant retards that think lag is so ric cos of all the taxes, have you considered that all ur companies dont pay the original tax + Lagos state is broke from all the projects its handling.

You think its beans to do projects. Wake up u all. These doctors just want to live like oil workers or their counterparts in the western country and trust me there is nothing wrong with that but if you dream such dream then lets see it in how you work.

Keeping patients waiting, prescribing the wrong medication and carelessly killing my friends daughter in that stupid lagos state hospital, surely shows you guys dont deserve a raise.

Fix yourself up then even the people will support you.

Even if the most developed countries, health care is not free, it is in fact the opposite! In the UK, tax payers are paying for health care, same as in Canada. In the US, if you don't have health insurance you are (almost) on your own if you need to manage an expensive surgery or chronic condition. Physicians should not be made to pay for the incompetency of the payer - government or private. All these people insulting doctors, my heart bleeds because you are just being ignorant and hurtful. I would like someone to tell me one forward-moving country where the physician is unpaid or underpaid... Stop all this ignorant hippocrates oath talk and read it up before you speak. You can find it here:

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/body/hippocratic-oath-today.html#modern

I swore it and nothing says there that i should be denied of my rights to earn a living that is commensurate with the rigorous training i received and the intricacy of the services i am called to deliver. The practice of Medicine in Nigeria has a long way to go i admit but please please stop thinking that the doctor was placed on this earth to give you free health care, it is not done anywhere!

I am so angry, i could burst a vessel :X

I worked in Luth and many times, my colleagues and I had to give patients or their families the money needed to buy the things we recommended. How long are we going to do that for eh, Nigeria???? How long, somebody tell me??? And people who says Drs are heartless and blah blah, you have no idea, absolutely none. In Nigeria, Drs have had to improvise more than anywhere you could dream of. Surgeries have been done with rechargeable lamps as the only source of light because PHCN came and say hello. Should we buy generators too? I admit again that we have a long way to go in terms of training and patient relations, but it is mostly a vicious cycle repeating itself that we need to break.

Apart from striking for salary raises, Drs need to strike so that the government can improve the deplorable conditions in which we work, and the totally sub-standard training we receive in medical school.

I am so glad i am not practising medicine in Nigeria because it was a very depressing and frustrating environment to be in.

I am still so very angry and almost bursting a vessel :X

abeggggi, make una no talk that 7yrs in med skul one....lawyers do 7yrs(university plus lawschool and service) and if u get a lawfirm to pay you 30g take it. If u get 80g jump at it and do thanksgiving...if you now get over 100g roll on the floor...so pls aint they both professionals, do u see them striking...mscheeew. When i was serving sef, most of the doctors on camp wanted to relocate ,i heard comments like ''i was earning 120g during my housemanship wettin be dis kind pay, abeg im redeploying to lagos''....Even as corpers they earned far more especially if they are posted to federal hospitals (e.g army ).Them no get 2 heads even if they are valuable to us.

@ Anonymous 10:55, just to educate you on the way a teaching hospital runs. Doctors do overnight calls and morning ward rounds , if you check properly the dr you have been waiting for is probably in the hospital doing a ward round, attending to a complicated case or giving medical students tutorials. If you are an emergency, there are doctors in the emergency section that will attend to you.

If any of you ever lost a loved one to these Striking Doctors, you wont be supporting them.
A very silly argument to say spending so much in school means they deserve outrageous fees from a struggling state all their lives. the govt had appealed to them to be patient for a while but.. you'll need to go to these govt. hospitals and see how death is manufactured in the absense of these doctors.

continue commenting here.this is why doctors went to saudi the last time and why seasoned doctors are reluctant to come back home.this is why our health sector is still backward. continue commenting, tomorrow they will sack health care workers as they please whenever they want, resulting in more dead people due to lack of expertise and reeling out of half-baked medical students.continue commenting while your own generation sinks into oblivion...continue commenting.

Those doctors and their leaders are simply wicked and heartless. The money they are fighting for should be more important than their profession and compassion for human that should have formed a major ingredient of their service. After going on strike for seven months, they came, collected their money and embarked on another strike. They are definitely playing gods. They should be shown that nobody is indispensable. This is a very serious matter. The nature of their job is humanitarian. I am sure that the Government is paying their salaries on monthly basis but now talking about the benefits, can they put themselves in the position of those that are on the sick beds? God made them to be doctors for the purpose of taking care of those that are sick. Even if government don’t pay them money, for sometimes they don’t have to turn down their services for the sake of the sick ones. These guys don’t even go to work everyday like other workers. Gone are the days when people would study medicine in order to save lives. Now, all we have are doctors who went into that profession for money. They get paid huge amounts of money when compared to other civil servants and their counterparts in other states and yet they ask for more money. What type of doctor watches on as the lives of his or her patients deplete just because of money? There are so many unemployed people in the country who will grasp at the opportunity these doctors had. Left to me, they were just being greedy and ungrateful to God for blessing them with a job that pays well. While some people in the same country seek jobs just to feed themselves, you lot seek increment in your already fat salaries. These doctors have lost the ethics of their profession and are just plain greedy. Honestly, this is definitely not a cheering news. When two elephant fight, only the grasses suffers. In as much that i will not encourage mass sack of experience and highly sensitive professionals like this, i must mention clearly that the spate of strike by this Doctors and other profession in Nigeria is just way too insensitive. More so, i have never seen this professionals like in Ghana going on strike solely for inadequate facility or condition of service rather than the selfish call for pay rise all the time. This brings us to the issue of true federalism. How can a state doctor wants to be paid same salary as a FG doctor or a local government doctor when income are not the same. The FG can’t keep negotiating salaries for state and local government. The principle of life itself do not agree that we all get same wages for same kind of Job. Call for my head again but av pour out my mind. Shikena

I'm a medical student and i don't see the sense in doctors striking. Why make the innocent masses suffer for your problem with the government? Quite unfair and silly. There are other ways to make your point instead of endangering people's lives. On the bright side, young doctors looking to work in public hospitals can finally get employed, and the sacked ones can enjoy the vacation they've been seeking.

Its almost as if ppl mistake d vow of celibacy for d hippocratic oath. A reverend father doesn't have a wife and children to take care of. The fact that you're a doctor doesn't mean u are a demi-god and should close ur mouth when u are suffering while others (doctors like urself in other states) are faring better. A strike may or may nt have been d best option bt it seems like d only language our leaders understand. Don't forget that Lagos State Govt AGREED to this new salary scale. So why don't u pay up? It's been almost 3 yrs for cryin out loud. I doubt if any other union wud show patience for that long.

To those saying to hell with them remember when u point an accusing finger 3 are pointed right back at u. You cannot buy experience. I pray this decision doesn't come back to haunt u all..

Doctors are not gods they have human needs and feelings like d rest of us. I'm convinced it would have been easier to implement d new salary scale than to take this drastic decision. Fashola pls rethink.

as for those who don't know on good authority, new intake including housemanship in public practice get,120k and above while in the private practice it's a 100k,that is why they can't go to private hospitals to work.but i can't tell of the big names like st.nicos,EKO,

I am a medical student in sagamu and was shocked when i saw the
'doctors mass sack' news on NTA yesterday.
This was the same yesterday that we joined our senior
colleagues/resident doctors on a street protest against the rampant
kidnapping of doctors in Ogun state.
Yes! Another doctor (the fourth now in Ikenne/Sagamu axis) has being
kidnapped. She is a consultant and married to a doctor. The ransome is
N100million. Nigerians no longer value doctors!

Many on this thread/in Lagos state don't know what the warning strike
was called for. It is for 3 issues mainly:

1) The LASG should abide by its agreement signed last year on paying
the full (100%) CONMESS, the Consolidated Medical workers Salary
Scale, to all doctors in its employ.

2) The excessive taxation targetted at doctors since it raised their
pay should reviewed. (This is also applicable to other ACN states like
ours, who though pay CONMESS, now tax doctors heavily.)

3) Houseofficers' teaching allowance should be paid. Housemanship is a
form of learning period when the 'houseboy'/houseofficer learns a lot
of practical skills but works himself almost to death (some
houseofficers hav actualy died of exhaustion in LASUTH, and many of us dread/avoid 'Ikeja' bcos of d excessive workload).

But really, should we keep training doctors only for them to relocate to treat Americans, Britons, Arabians & Australians because those are the
people who truly apreciate their services? Should a LG Chairman or
Senator earn more than a professor of Neurosurgery? When will
Nigerians start to value their lives enough to demand from the govt their 'rightful' due?

Fellow 'Lindaikejians', no amount is too much to pay the people who
ensure that human lives are saved...ensuring you and your family live in
good health. Yet, all they are asking for is CONMESS.
Yes! CONMESS IS NOT TOO HIGH THAT EVERY GOVT IN NIG CAN'T AND SHOULDN'T PAY.

N.B: Pls help us raise the publicity against kidnapping of doctors in Ogun State. Thank u so much.
