Popular pastor and founder of the Living Faith Christian Church International, David Oyedepo, will face a legal action for slapping a young lady during church service, last year.
Robert Igbinedion, a Lagos based lawyer, confirmed to Premium Times Friday that he had filed a suit, on behalf of the young lady, at the Ogun State High Court for the enforcement of the lady's fundamental rights to freedom from inhuman and degrading treatment, human dignity, fair hearing, and freedom from discrimination.
Mr. Igbinedion is seeking an award of N2bn as 'general and exemplary damages' against Mr. Oyedepo.
If a wrong is done to the young lady, she is bound to receive justice for that wrong," said Mr. Igbinedion, a Solicitor at Salus Populi Chambers.

Is there no Criminal law against Assault and/or Battery in Nigeria? When I first read about the Oyedepo story about slapping a young lady, I was very surprised that the man was even boosting about a matter that should be criminally prosecuted. Regardless of whether the lady is a witch or not is a different issue that can be dealt with separately; but the man's slapping should be reported to police and Oyedepo criminally prosecuted. That is how a society grows by punishing the offenders to deter others from doing the same wrong. It simply appears that no body gets criminally prosecuted for any thing in Nigeria; the embezzling public officials, the man who slapped a lady nurse in Delta state, those that beat up their wives or girlfriends, the list is endless.

Talking from a legal point of view, there is no mention of the girl asking the lawyer to sue on her behalf, if the lawyer is just suing for her without her instructions, then he has no locus standi becos he cannot prove he suffered any loss from what happened to the girl becos he is not d victim. On the other hand if u say the state should sue on her behalf then she should be willing to come forward as the complainant, becos without the complainant pressing charges there is nothing the state can do.

I am a Pastor, I also got a part of my pastorial training from the Word of faith bible institute run by Bishop Oyedepo's ministry. I ll like to lay some foundations here: 1. It's not wrong and unGodly to speak against the misdeeds of a Pastor, no human being is perfect enough to be above board, when people make mistakes their social cum spiritual status should never place them beyond correction. 2. There is no Biblical precedent that permits or allows a Pastor to slap people. 3. The Bishop can't claim to be in the spirit when the slapping incident happened because ''the spirit of prophecy is subject to the prophet''. 4. Bishop Oyedepo is my mentor and has mentored so many other young men and women both in the ministry and the secular sphere, nobody can deny that the Bishop is called by God and his ministry has been a blessing to milions all over the world but that doesn't place him above board, no man born of a woman is. When people through their actions and utterance go beyond certain boundries, it's within the authourity given to the society by God to call them to order. some people are advocating that people who hold certain spiritual responsibilities e.g pastors should not be accountable to laws made by human societies. This has never been the bible's position. If not for anything else this law suit ll send a message to Pastors, reminding some who are dining in the table of divinity that they still remain human.

Yestarday I posted this story on my facebook wall and after a few comments from friends, my Aunty sent me an inbox message, telling me not to get myself involved with anything that has to do with "men of God". In my rage, I made an attempt to give her a logical reply but saw the futility in doing so knowing how emotionally religious she is. From the tone of her message to me, I could tell she was convinced the pastor's act was wrong but was too afraid to say so because according to her, they have got some "supernatural infallibility pass" that confers to them the power to do anything and not be judged. To say I was disappointed is an understatement, if a good and educated person like her was convinced in her heart that a wrong has been done but yet felt reluctant to speak up because of some supernatural power myth that these "MOGs" then where do they get justification for condemning politicians, druglords and their likes when they go wrong. Evil flourish because good people keep quite, in my confused state whether to give my aunty a direct reply, I decided to write a subliminal message on my face book wall this afternoon, hoping she will admit to herself that her kind of reticence is dangerous and does not augur well for a society that yearns for equity, fairness and justice. Here is the message below:

Is there no Criminal law against Assault and/or Battery in Nigeria? When I first read about the Oyedepo story about slapping a young lady, I was very surprised that the man was even boosting about a matter that should be criminally prosecuted. Regardless of whether the lady is a witch or not is a different issue that can be dealt with separately; but the man's slapping should be reported to police and Oyedepo criminally prosecuted. That is how a society grows by punishing the offenders to deter others from doing the same wrong.

Talking from a legal point of view, there is no mention of the girl asking the lawyer to sue on her behalf, if the lawyer is just suing for her without her instructions, then he has no locus standi becos he cannot prove he suffered any loss from what happened to the girl becos he is not d victim. On the other hand if u say the state should sue on her behalf then she should be willing to come forward as the complainant, becos without the complainant pressing charges there is nothing the state can do.

I am a Pastor, I also got a part of my pastorial training from the Word of faith bible institute run by Bishop Oyedepo's ministry.
I ll like to lay some foundations here:
1. It's not wrong and unGodly to speak against the misdeeds of a Pastor, no human being is perfect enough to be above board, when people make mistakes their social cum spiritual status should never place them beyond correction.
2. There is no Biblical precedent that permits or allows a Pastor to slap people.
3. The Bishop can't claim to be in the spirit when the slapping incident happened because ''the spirit of prophecy is subject to the prophet''.
4. Bishop Oyedepo is my mentor and has mentored so many other young men and women both in the ministry and the secular sphere, nobody can deny that the Bishop is called by God and his ministry has been a
blessing to milions all over the world but that doesn't place him above board, no man born of a woman is.
When people through their actions and utterance go beyond certain boundries, it's within the authourity given to the society by God to call them to order. some people are advocating that people who hold certain spiritual responsibilities e.g pastors should not be accountable to laws made by human societies. This has never been the bible's position.
If not for anything else this law suit ll send a message to Pastors, reminding some who are dining in the table of divinity that they still remain human.

@ Daniel, I think people forget that some parts of Nigeria are circular. Society's where religion has no place within the confines of legal jurisdictions. This act of violence was committed by a citizen of such said society and must be tried by the laws of that land in accordance with the punishment suited to anyone else out there who does the same in any other situation.
Keep Jesus out this, the worst thing that has happened to societies all over the world, is the use of religion to terrorize people. This man should rightly be made an example of.
And people who speak against supposed men of God do not have to fear to do so, when those 'men' do wrong. Yestarday I posted this story on my facebook wall and after a few comments from friends, my Aunty sent me an inbox message, telling me not to get myself involved with anything that has to do with "men of God". In my rage, I made an attempt to give her a logical reply but saw the futility in doing so knowing how emotionally religious she is. From the tone of her message to me, I could tell she was convinced the pastor's act was wrong but was too afraid to say so because according to her, they have got some "supernatural infallibility pass" that confers to them the power to do anything and not be judged. To say I was disappointed is an understatement, if a good and educated person like her was convinced in her heart that a wrong has been done but yet felt reluctant to speak up because of some supernatural power myth that these "MOGs" then where do they get justification for condemning politicians, druglords and their likes when they go wrong. Evil flourish because good people keep quite, in my confused state whether to give my aunty a direct reply, I decided to write a subliminal message on my face book wall this afternoon, hoping she will admit to herself that her kind of reticence is dangerous and does not augur well for a society that yearns for equity, fairness and justice. Here is the message below:
Seriously, most of us that call ourselves born again are hypocritical in the way we approach issues. When Politicians do wrong we condemn them in unison, in the court of public opinion we slaughter them even before they are judged in a lawfully constituted court. However, when our pastors, your Daddy GOs, spiritual head.... Do wrong, we lose all sense of honesty and impartiality, only to resort to double standards, we want to leave it to God to judge, some religious zealots even try to rationalize their wrongs by misquoting and misapplying bible verses, not to mention the use of that overcycled cliché of "touch not my annointed" even when his actions are harming the innocent. No wonder our society is the way it is, we respect personalities than the law, our Laws are only there to punish the weak and the poor; there is always an explanation for the privileged few offenders to help them evade justice-if it is not a plea bargain, it is some inexplicable supernatural anecdote. As popular as Rev Eddie Long was and still is, he was made to face the full wrath of the Law when he was found wanting, that is how a society should function. Here the elders that are supposed to talk are busy playing the game of sentiments and giving the offenders an exaggerated sense of infallibility. Little wonder every aspect of our affairs has lost focus and credibility, after all, it is as the spirit leads. Abeg jare! People should be bold enough to call a spade a spade irrespective of whose ox is gored, a wrong is a wrong-whether committed by somebody you look up to or the most distasteful set of people you will like to see rot in jail- the offenders deserve thesame reprimand like any other offender. Nobody is above reproach, as long as you are a human being facing thesame temptations, struggles, emotional tides and outburst. It is high time we raised the bar of our own convictions and honestly decide what constitute the truth and act on it.
