Photo of the Nigerian man stabbed to death in Canada

The Nigerian Canadian Association of Calgary (NCAC) posted a photo of Nicolas Ozoechi Nwonye, who was stabbed to death on a train in Calgary on Friday, June 2. See previous report here

As at the time of his death, Nicholas was a nursing student at Bow Valley College. 18 months ago, Nicolas left his job as an engineer in Nigeria to bring his wife and young children to Canada for a better life.

In May 2017 Nicholas entered the Practical Nursing program at Bow Valley College.

Although focused on his studies, he was working two jobs to support his young family.  According to his instructor, "He was a very kind, empathetic individual. He smiled all the time."

"Nicholas Ozoechi Nwonye was a kind person who, even in the briefest of moments, left an indelible impression."

The NCAC is working closely with the family to give them every form of support they need.

Hello Linda, chaos is presently going on in Kaduna, around Command second sch, romi , a young christian boy was killed by Muslim army men and Christians are retaliating. Noise everywhere, siren, burning tyres, it seems like crises is about to happen. Do your research and report the news so people who are not aware can be more careful!

I sympathize with the family but Nigerians need to wake up and smell the coffee. The grass is not greener on the other side, it is greener where you water it. I don't know why someone will leave a job in Nigeria to go struggle in another man's land. It's understandable if you don't have a job in Nigeria. If you have one and ur wife has a job as well abeg stay back home and enjoy with the little you have. Don't let ppl in the US deceive you, there are no jobs there. Except if you want to go there and be flipping burgers

Nigerians back home have wrong illusion about Canada. When you tell them back home that Canada is not easy, and so called agents are just luring them with false hope and readily avaliable jobs to come most won't take you serious. This is because for every form these agents are selling,it is either 3,000 or 5,000 naira respectively. So if you get 100 people buying forms everyday, that's money to the bank. Please don't be decieved,if you are 40 years and above,by the time you go back to school and finish, get a good job, retirement is about 10 to 15 years. So how much have you saved towards your retirement savings, when those that have been working for 40 years retirements saving is either 800 CAD a month or 1,300 CAD a month.Nobody can survive on these amounts I mentioned in Canada, except you use such in Nigeria. But a lot of our people don't think they will ever come back to Nigeria, after your energy has been sapped in obodo oyibo. Not a single small house is built back home, shame to come back to Nigeria. Please be wise when you come to Canada, the weather is horrible all over Canada. That'a why a lot of us are clustered in Toronto,a nd the trip back to Africa is a 24 hours trip, you have to stop in Europe for couple of hours (4-8) in the Airports, you cannot leave the areas. Please folks, don't get carried away, our kids don't even think of coming back to settle or visit the moment the parents are dead here in Canada. Some of us are trying to encourage them to marry Nigerians so as not to forget Nigeria,but... I love Nigeria and still keeping my Nigerian passports for me and my kids. For those in their 20s and 30s,it is better, you have enough time to go back to school.

I totally agree with u. Keeping passport for nothing. They will be in canada living a comfy life and be advicing friends and family not to live in canada. Selfish beings.

This is just an unfortunate event. Life in canada is sweet if you plan properly or even any abroad for thay matter.Just be prepared to work hard. Healthcare is easiet way to get a steady job amd steady income. Whther2 nurse, doctor, healthcare assistant, physitherapist, pharamcist etc. Just plan. If you are lazy, you can get a pretty low income job like cashier etc and live just above poverty level but still survive. Having a masters doenst guarantee automatic job, its masters in what.
Canada is cold sha but people are living through it. If you are not a social person, ha, u fit kpeme alone. Better be friendly by force cos you fit freeze alone in your house nobody go remember you.
Or stay back in Naija and start your life. Plan with your spouse, start a family, one of you should start nursing school, start ha2bing babies, one day the dream will come true and you are more than ready to relocate if thats what you want.

Oga, do you know how many lives get wasted in Nigeria everyday? Even if it's just the ones we read here. Jungle justice, armed robbery, rituals, road accidents, collapsed buildings, domestic violence etc. Please, people die everywhere

If you have the opportunity to come to Canada or other better western world with legal papers ...I repeat legal papers, please come. For your kids sake...come.All those abroad saying otherwise should come back home....full stop.....don't discourage...let them come n hustle like you did.You talking about age limit...I ask,are you God.
The man was just at the right time at the wrong time.

Thanks to mysterious for making out time to enlighten us. If you are above 40, please forget about Canada unless you want to go back to school and work, which is not bad too. They need you to contribute to their economy. Let's leave this to our children and the younger generation.
