Aliko Dangote says high rate of unemployment in Nigeria is the reason Arewa Youths gave Igbo traders in the North quit notice

Nigeria billionaire and owner of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has disclosed that he is uncomfortable with the high rate of unemployment in the nation. He said the problem of unemployment and the high rate of poverty gives him sleepless nights.

Dangote made this known on Saturday when a team of business executives from Lagos Business School, LBS, visited him at his multi-billion dollars refinery and petrochemical projects in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.

"What keeps me awake at nights is not really the enormity of business ideas running through my mind, but it is actually high rate of unemployment in the country. It is an eyesore and I think we have collective responsibility to solve this problem," The Nation quoted Dangote.

He added that Nigeria's growing population should have been an asset if the strengths of the youth were harnessed properly, however, this is not the case and because of that, poverty and crime are on the rise.

He said: "The more poverty that you have in a society without education, the more criminals you breed. It is surprising that poverty grows in this country as population grows, especially in the North where you have low income families bearing score of children they cannot cater for."

Dangote also pointed out that it was not the duty of the government to create jobs, stressing that creation of an enabling environment for entrepreneurs to thrive should be the focus of any government. Using developed countries as an example, he said that growth and development in such countries were achieved, not by the government, but by the private sector.

The richest black man in the world said that insurgency and militancy were linked to unemployment and that criminality would fester in a society where the government does not encourage entrepreneurs to create jobs. He cited the Arewa youths who asked Igbos to leave Northern Nigerian as an example and said unemployment was the reason for their actions.

He said: "Some guys who have no relevance and values came out to issue a warning that Igbo should leave the North. I am surprised everybody started talking about this nonsense. Why are we talking about it? Obviously, in a place where there is a lot of joblessness, it is expected that this kind of jobless people would come out with all sorts of anger. We understand the reasons why they are angry, but they cannot justify their action when they have decided not to work. They only issue senseless warning to keep themselves relevant.”

Dangote is being pretentious and being deceitful when it comes to employment. All these are sponsored news item for the media. He pays very poorly and enslaves workers. Go to his factories and find out. The same man that sacked over 800 employees (all graduates) in February this year 2017, in Obajana and Ibese for no reason is talking about youth unemployment? He didn't even pay them their entitlements. Hypocrisy at his highest order. Well, the case is already in National Industrial Court.

Thank you Dangote. The Government is the real problem. FIRS continues to collect bribe and charge budding entrepreneurs huge taxes just to rack up revenues for the government. They cripple businesses with huge tax burden. Until the government tackles the relentless pursuit for taxes just fund greedy people like Tinubu in Lagos state, unemployment will continue to rise. Also tackle the reckless child birth in the north.

...'they can't justify their actions when they have decided not to work'. So,the Northern youths have been offered jobs but they decided not to work. Alright.

Some Nigerians are all riled up because of demand for referendum by the Biafrans. But in their backyard a resurgent Boko Haram is killing more Nigerians, abducting security personnel and invading territories. Just few days ago, dozens were killed on Eid Fitr day inside the hallowed walls of University of Maiduguri, the numero uno citadel of learning in the northeast. I believe the issue of Biafra, no matter how thorny it may appear, can be swiftly resolved on a negotiation table. But ending homegrown terrorism with religious ideology is intractable, and at best long drawn.

The unending terror by al Qaeda affiliates that straddle the borders of Pakistan and Afghanistan is indication that terrorism can last for years. It's now over a decade that al Shabab terrorists have been holding Somalia and parts of Kenya on the jugular. And it took joint efforts of United States, Kurdish forces and Iraqi government, on one side and Russia, Syrian government forces, Iran and Hezbollah on the other side to put ISIS on the back footing. Still, ISIS is yet to be dislodged from Raqqa, a city the terrorists adopted as their capital.

What I know about Nigerian state is that we often behave like an ostrich. We run away from confronting problems headlong. We allow little challenges to transform into Frankenstein monsters. Then, we adopt a fire-brigade approach to resolve the problems thereafter. The result is always costly in lives and wealth. It's not too late for us to sit down as compatriots to dialogue while we fight Boko Haram terrorism.

After reading his statement, I jumped to the conclusion that people like Linda are part of the problems we have in Nigeria. They give headings to posts that do not really reflect the contents and statements made by people.

1st solve our number one problem which is good electricity. Talk to the government they r ur friends. Once there is good electricity forget anything called unemployment cos industrialisation will come back to nigeria thereby creating employment in our society.

SO, IF THE IGBO TRADERS LEAVE THE NORTH, THE NORTHERN YOUTHS WILL GET EMPLOYED? THERE'S NO SENSIBLE BASIS FOR THIS DEFENCE PLEASE..

I bet to disagree with a few of Dangote's assertion. For me, there is no primary link between poverty hate speeches and agitation for self determination/control of resources. Hatred has no name but that. There is absolutely nothing you can do, for haters would always hate. Even when they are employed and rich, haters would always hate. While agitation for self determination and complete control of resources is as a result of long standing injustice of robbing Peter to pay Paul. Getting resources of A to develop B, while B languish in poverty.
