Mother writes open letter to a hospital employee who told her 4yr old daughter that the boy who hit her 'likes her'

A Columbus, Ohio mother, Merritt Smith shared a photo of her 4yr old daughter accompanied with an open letter on her Facebook page on Oct. 6th to an unnamed hospital employee who told her daughter 'I bet he likes you.' after the little girl was sent to the hospital to get stitches after she was hit by a boy at school. What Smith wrote after the cut...

Smith writes:
"I bet he likes you." Dear man at the registration desk at Children's hospital, l'm positive that you didn't think that statement through. As soon as I heard it I knew that is where it begins. That statement is where the idea that hurting is flirting begins to set a tone for what is acceptable behavior. My four year old knows "That's not how we show we like someone. That was not a good choice." In that moment, hurt and in a new place, worried about perhaps getting a shot or stitches you were a person we needed to help us and your words of comfort conveyed a message that someone who likes you might hurt you. No. I will not allow that message to be ok. I will not allow it to be louder than "That's not how we show we like each other." At that desk you are in a position of influence, whether you realize it or not. You thought you were making the moment lighter. It is time to take responsibility for the messages we as a society give our children. Do Not tell my 4 year old who needs stitches from a boy at school hitting her "I bet he likes you." NO.

The man didn't mean any harm. He was only trying to calm the little girl. Linda take note!

The world has really gone crazy.. A child's education is not meant for the family alone but also the combined effort of the society, but with the kinda people we ve out there,I strongly believe every family should take the sole education of their wards much more seriously before they collide with the larger outside.... #TheHomeFirst#....

I agree with the mum, its better that statement is erased from the girls mind before she grows up thinking those that hit me like me.

Nice one frm her but its better she channel dis to d approriate quarters so dat necessary corrections wil b taken frm it.

The mother is 100% correct. That was insensitive and an expensive joke on the part of the hospital employee.

That is how the mentality starts over there...slowly they will grrow up calling beatings from a guy love. Then it will xreep into other culture. Africans lets stop copying this white folks. Its obvious they are living in another part of the world.

They should receive sense in Jesus name

He meant no harm. Some people lacked the manner on how to express themselves, so they look for any means possible to get that attention.

So you learn, my friend. You Hit is not love. So if you see any man beat a lady, she should not endure and think it's love, she should flee

The man might have meant no harm "yes", but the way he conveyed it is quite negative.

The guy made an off hand statement but I agree with the angry mom, kids are like sponges and what they soak up now might carry on into their adulthood!! Maybe those women who think that men who beat them do so because they love were told the same thing the guy did.

Ukwuamaka, that's why some people are and remain unbalanced emotionally and psychologically instead of proper handling or correction, they end up fomenting trouble on the society by damaging others as well
