Xenophobia: 6,000 Nigerians will lose their jobs if MTN leaves Nigeria

MTN Nigeria says about 6,000 Nigerians will lose their jobs if MTN is made to leave Nigeria. Head of Communications MTN, Mr Wale Goodluck said this while reacting to calls by a protest group in Edo state yesterday that the telecommunications offices in Nigeria will be shut and their installations attacked if the xenophobic attacks in South Africa continues.

Mr Goodluck said there are only 12 expatriates working for the company in Nigeria compared to a workforce of 6,000 Nigerians.
"So if people go ahead with their threats to attack our facilities, what that means is that we may be forced to close down the business in Nigeria and about 6,000 Nigerians that make up 99% of our workforce will be unemployed.
Then, when you look at our support chain, we have about 500,000 Nigerians gainfully employed. So, boycotting our services simply means destroying so many other Nigerian businesses and making over 500,000 other Nigerians to lose their jobs. This business supports a lot of businesses across the length and breadth of Nigeria. Many of the businesses that are affiliated to South Africa are in the retail space, supporting the growth of Nigeria and employing so many Nigerians. We see no revenge of Xenophobia and we commend the role the Nigerian High Commissioner in South Africa has played; at least there has been no fatality on the part of any Nigerian,” he said

Rubbish ! We have Glo, Airtel and Etisalat. Shut MTN down and teach this South Africans a lesson that they deserve!
Where are the 6,000 staff ? Staff that they pay peanuts.Meanwhile South Africa is making billions of profit from Nigeria. Shut it down ! Let them take their MTN back to South Africa. And let's see if they can make as much profit as they are making whilst they were in Nigeria. Are their people not burning down Nigerian businesses in SA ? You Nigerians need to wake up !

Make them go self...always all the time network problem..we have our glo and Etisalat

Oh what rubbish!! We won't close down mtn we ll simply nationalise it here by keeping it running under a different indigenous management e.g globalcom might be easier said than done but definitely worth it...so no thanks.

Let them lose their jobs. Glo and Etisalat are ready to expand their networks and employ the staff. I trust Mike Adenuga. The man go employ them. Afterall, South Africa no let Glo enter their country. So why are they here. NONSENSE!!!!!!

That was a strategic response to ensure that Nigerians change their minds. If 500,000 Nigerians become jobless in protecting their brothers in SA, I think it is worth it not forgetting billions of Rand you will definitely lose cutting off from your major subscribers in Africa. However, MTN should take it as a point of duty to speak with the authority in charge to rise up to the challenge and ensure it doesn't repeat itself in the nearest future. Nigerians and All Africans condemn this outrightly.

Go back already, how much do you pay those 6000 nigerians, are they not contract staff that are under paid. Please we want you out of our country before we start attacking you people, bloody ingrates.Like you are not making so much money and giving so little in return.

These Hypocrites should Shut up. It's Sad though. I feel so pained. Yes, 6000 people will loose their Jobs. Myself Included. But how many of us are Real MTN Staff.??? The entire company's work force is outsourced. So we are Basically all contract staff. Without any form of. allowance. Just a Basic salary.

This large scale of workforce outsourcing IS NOT the case in South Africa. These guys milk our Country and equally treat us Nigerians like Trash, both in our Country and theirs.

I know any Business strives to be profitable, but If a Company can earn over N749 Billion after Tax, why should more than 85% of its Staff be contract? Its a case of monkey dey work, Baboon dey Chop!!!

I'm not saying the Company should be shut Down, But my point is MTN Management should not make it seem they are doing its Staff a favour. Bcos we receive Peanuts compared to what they earn...........If MTN Nigeria goes down, sincerely na those Management Staff go feel the Pain more.

Wonder how many of the people who replied to this post are MTN employees. A lot of those 6000 people that could potentially lose their jobs have families to support, some might even be the sole provider in the family. So of course it would be easy for anyone with no stakes in the issue to say "shut down MTN". Callous as his statement sounded, we can be blinded emotions and make decisions with far carrying ramifications.

MTN ARE LIARS. If they leave, other networks will take their place. MTN has been the one preventing other networks from being registered. If they venture leave, they will be shocked that in a record time two weeks, their place and service will be taken a Nigerian.

THIS MAN LACKS BUSINESS SENSE. I THINK HIS BRAIN NEEDS TO BE EXAMINED. NONSENSE! WE ARE TALKING ABOUT LIVES AND YOU ARE THREATENING NIGERIANS WITH JOB(S). SHAME ON YOU. IF MTN IS SHUT DOWN, OTHER OF MTN COMPETITORS WILL HAVE MORE PEOPLE TO PATRONIZE THEM WHICH MAY LEAD TO EMPLOYMENT IN THESE OTHER FIRMS.

That is the beauty of foreign business located in your country. Nationalise. Pay them book value. Business continue. Change name. Ask BP, Barclay's Bank, Standard Bank etc. No big deal. It was done in Nigeria in the seventies. Today, standard bank is first bank, BP is Forte Oil after it became AP.

This Nonsense Mr Wale man should STFU... He is indirectly insulting our government. Is he saying that we can't survive if MTN leaves naija? He must be an idiot. Someone should tell him that soldier comes, soldier go, barracks will never be empty. we can't condole this SA nonsense just Becos Nigerians will lose jobs in MTN. Enough is Enough. What arrant nonsense!!!

Zeme,shows you are an illiterate.kfc isn't SA

Anonymous said...

Not exactly true as the current SA shareholders(if actually they want to leave) will sell the shares or assets of MTN to another company/person and that company will need manpower to continue with the operation of MTN assets and infrastructure (since the company will by buying for the purpose of making money). More so it is not likely that our regulators will allow sale to companies like Glo, Airtel and Etisalat and the emerging company will definitely retain staff except those at management level. The present brand name Airtel has been sold several times in the past. Again with the MTN 45% share of the market and their profit after tax in millions of US$, the current SA shareholders even in their dream will NEVER sell off their interest . So Bros we are not fools we know the FACTS, acknowledge that you are performing your Job Description.
