Caverton Helicopter expatriate manager resigns over unpaid salaries of Nigerian staff

An expatriate manager at Caverton Helicopters, has reportedly resigned from the company over the unfair treatment of his Nigerian colleagues during the yuletide season, PM News reports.
Surendra Bhagwandass, a Base Maintenance Manager at Caverton Helicopters, a company that has contracts spanning from Shell to Total, said he became frustrated that while he was being well taken care of, Nigerian workers were poorly paid and their salaries were sometimes delayed. He said it was a security breach not to pay people who work for oil companies.
“Shame on you guys,” he told Caverton management in an email distributed to most staff and obtained by a PM News correspondent.
“(I) heard from the people I work with that they are not paid for the festive season. This is a security breach as I now feel uncomfortable to travel and work with, while you guys have a merry time. Please have a heart as these people have family while you all enjoy the best. Being with your family and Happy.
“You all break record as the only Company in the World not to pay your workers.
“Shame on you guys,” the expatriate said.

But Doyin Alegbe, a Personal Assistant to Caverton Managing Director, Mr. Shola Falola, dismissed the letter saying that it was “a gross case of insubordination”

She said because expatriate workers are paid in dollars and Nigerian staff are paid in Naira, the company had challenges selling the dollars and this caused some delay in December.

She said everyone has now been paid.

She said Caverton does not discriminate between Nigerians and expatriate workers.
But some Nigerian workers who spoke with our correspondent said while expatriate staff are paid in dollars, Nigerian workers who put more effort and spend more hours at work, earn less.

Among the allegations, the staff said there was no salary structure and promotion was almost non existent for Nigerian workers.

The staff said while local workers are not given accommodation or security escorts, expatriates enjoy all the benefits but come to work late and leave before them.

“They earn dollars, we earn naira but we work more than them. Several staff have been attacked because you need to leave your house around 4 o’clock in the morning. There is no security for us. But they enjoy everything in our country,” a staff said, pleading anonymity.
The staff accused Caverton of promising oil companies such as SHELL that it will take good care of staff, but not doing so once the contract is signed.

“We signed a contract with SHELL for N94 billion,” he said, adding that the money doesn’t trickle down to Nigerian staff.

Caverton only learnt from SHELL,this has been the practice in the oil and gas to treat Nigerians as second-class employee in their own country,I have been there and seen it all,no foreign oil and gas company is exempted,PENGASSAN has gone on strike for these sort of issues without any respite, our politicians have ignored these treatment without a care, well, what goes around comes around...the expatriate may have thought,it's not just a coincidence that Nigerians kidnap politicians and expatriate oil workers,it all adds up...it's called jungle justice or you call it karma.

When patriotic Nigerians in high places take this approach to the pathetic Nigeria situation then Nigeria will become a better place example,I don't understand what Okonjo is still doing with Jonathan and Sanusi's action to Jonathan to me looks like a good example of a patriotic Nigerian but I won't be surprised if 90% of Nigerians supports Jonathan on his disregard for the rule of law...get the picture after all that is how we ended up with leaders like Jonathan in the first place. Clueless Nigerians(90%).

Trouble is brewing in Caverton as I can sense. Unfortunately, National workers are not allowed to have union in Caverton and that is a big problem. A strong union will help address this and correct it once and for all. Imagine the PA saying it is as a result of scarcity of dollars. Why did they not forsee the challenge before now and make adequate arrangements to ensure a smooth sail in December? Come to think of it, since when did they start paying support staff in dollars? Cheap and Weak lies. Somebody fixed the money somewhere to yield interest for him.Wickedness of man. That is why Nigeria is where we are today. It is not in getting big contracts through crooked politics, it is sustaining it. Safety is being compromised again. The agencies should look into this and do the needful.

Hehehehe.....you don't discriminate?? Here is a direct quote from your statement Toyin Alegbe:
But Doyin Alegbe, a Personal Assistant to Caverton Managing Director, Mr. Shola Falola, dismissed the letter saying that it was “a gross case of insubordination”

She said because expatriate workers are paid in dollars and Nigerian staff are paid in Naira, the company had challenges selling the dollars and this caused some delay in December.

She said everyone has now been paid.

She said Caverton does not discriminate between Nigerians and expatriate workers.

My dad is a staff of Caverton and what you read here isnt true. I know many young nigerian engineers there who were celebrating after their salary was increased just after the signing of the contract with shell. most of them now earn above 600k monthly once they get any international certification. its a fact i know, and i saw and have been benefiting from. don't believe all that you read.

Linda thank you so soo soooo much for this. I currently work at caverton helicopters in ikeja. I wake up at 4am to get tp work by 5.30 in the morning. I work in the operations depart and because the first flight leaves as early as 7.30 we have to get to work for 5.30 am and it is not the typical 9 to 5 work. Basic starting salary is 50k that is if you even have a university degree.
Doyin Alegbe is not the md's personal assistant she's the assistant HR manager who I can say is paid as an expatriate herself cos she was brought in from the UK.
I've been working here for the past 3 years and I can tell you that promotions do not exist. There's no chance or opportunities for growth. The company doesnt only delay stafd payments but also delays suppliers payments.
Its ridiculous. Cos we can all see the flashy lifestyles the our chairman and his children are living.
Private jets in and out and we are made to suffer. Even the expatriates treat the nigerian staff like absolute shit.
I can go on and on but I would def b talking too much.
God will help ua

Caverton helicopters is heaven compared to their next door neigbour;BRISTOW HELICOPTERS.it is worse in their port harcourt branch,Bristow helicopters is where racism prevails, a black man is treated like trash, they sack people any how, overwork their staffs, pay them very poorly, even with numerous contracts that they are handling.. imagine a radio operator that works from 6am to 6pm being paid 49 thousand naira a month . Talk less of the ones that work in the hanger With just one day off in once a week or 2 weeks. You work on Sundays, Christmas Day, everyday of your life and they just don't care.. Trust me , decades ago gan sef . I am not suprised this is Nigeria we are talking about . We treat all of these 'oyinbo's' better than our own people but yet if we go to their country it is tge opposite . For example India and Malaysia , but yet they will come to our own country and get high paying jobs they r not qualified for most of the time but because they r oyinbo it's okay .
A lot of them maltreat us in out own country and get away with it and majority of them don't have the right ( in terms of immigration documents ) to be in this country examples are the Lebanese and Chinese people but yet the Nigerian government will continue to let it slide . SMH

Look, I used to work for a furniture coy in port-harcourt, yeah, I got something better, so I swiftly ported. Now, while I was there, I earned 50k monthly, which is fair enuf as I hadn't even gone for nysc. My point is, the guys who did most of the job as welders and carpenters, who work from 8-5 daily(mon-fri) and 8-12 on sat work in the sun and rain for a meagre monthly salary of 10k (for the 'snr' ones, and 7k for the jnr staff). Then, the foolish lebanese expatriates are given monthly allowance in naira and also paid salary in dollars. They exploit us menhn..and even refer to the boys as monkeys, donkeys, etc! I have 3 things to say,1.salary is not determined by the time u input at work but the skillset you possess,so whether foreigner or Nigeria, whoever is more qualified for d job gets more pay.that happens everywhere in the world 2.this is only one side of the story, its too narrow to make rash judgemrnts on 3. Nigerians need a mentality and environmental change, we don't regard ourselves highly.the ones who do make it in Nigeria be get rich enough to respect nd be respected or are making it abroad. Moral is ;respect nd value yourself nd no one will thro shit at you.even your boss

I do not know know the dept of this story cos I wasn't in caverton by then, but now that I'm there I don't doubt the story nor the comments,if u think ur father, relative or friend works in caverton and is earning very well, that person is one of those frustrating blacks and killing Nigeria, see the way they treat ptdf pilots, lie that govt hasn't paid them yet govt has paid over 70% of the money, the pilots where almost disgraced out of staff quarters and yet, send them abroad for what govt has paid for they are lying no slots, all over the world? Since they don't want to train the pilots return the money and stop lying, with all this I can believe wat I read here.if Linda like she post this,Ait will soon take up a better news about caverton scandal.

Caverton is presently having problems with ptdf bcos of the funds collected for training and haven't done anything except ground courses that cost nothing, there pilots are leaving with one of there very influential pilot leaving soon, the govt isn't monitoring but I'm disappointed with the way they are treating there fellow Nigerians, rate the young pilots to takeover from the foreigners, they won't.there doom is close, they will soon loose the shell contract bcos of the way they playing the govt trained pilots
