Reps approve 14 years imprisonment for same sex marriage

The House of Representatives yesterday Thursday May 29th approved 14 years imprisonment for persons who contracted same sex marriage in the country.

This was sequel to a clause-by-clause consideration of a Bill for an Act to prohibit marriage or union entered between persons of same sex, at the Committee of the Whole.

“Marriage or civil union entered between persons of same gender shall not be solemnised in any place of worship, either church or mosque or any place in Nigeria,” it said.

Introducing the bill, Rep. Albert Sam-Tsokwa ( PDP-Taraba) said that it sought to achieve a far reaching objective by outlawing same sex marriage and provide punishment for offenders.
It also set out a 10-year sentence for “any person who directly or indirectly makes public show of same-sex amorous relationships’’.

“Any persons or group of persons that administers, witnesses, screen and shields the solemnisation of same sex marriage in Nigeria on conviction, will be liable to 10 years imprisonment.’’

It would be recalled also that the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, had warned that his country would consider withholding aid from countries that did not recognise gay rights.

In Nov. 2011, the senate approved the bill that would make same-sex marriages punishable by up to 14 years for the couple and 10 for anyone abetting such unions.

The bill is expected to be sent to the Senate for concurrence.

It is really sad that Nigerians are so full of hate, but we are the first to stand up to say we are good Christians and Muslims, I guess our righteousness allows us to loot Goverment treasury, kidnap, do ritual killings, 419, Rapes, Armed robberey,Terrorism and all the other wonderful virtues we are known for.
I can't believe that we think being gay is a worse sin than all these things and so punishable by 14 years in prison. Jesus died for all of us and I sincerely don't think he would have sent people to prison for being gay. The mind of Christ is a mind of Love. Hate the sin people and not the sinner.
Just incase u r wondering, I am not gay but some of the most wonderful people I know r gay and that is their private life and does not diminish them in my eyes.
Sorry this is so long a letter but had to get it off my chest!

Not that I support same sex marriages but how can you make it a crime to be with the one you love. You can refuse to join them as man n wife or man n man or whatevr. But why throw them in jail. Paedophiles, rapists, sex offenders, underage marriages, list is endless. And they pick gays?

Chioma said...

I cant applaud this im sorry. What about paedophilia? Corruption? The fact that innocent people have been locked up in nigerian prisons for years with out a trial? Boko Haram? Roads so bad that people die everyday? The fact that we have not eradicated polio? The incredibly high illiteracy rates in the country? Even ghost workers in the ministries that drain the countries resources in recurrent expenditures? Please, these fools havent done ANYTHING

ONce Again misplaced priorities of Nigerians and hypocrisy! So its Ok to kill people for rituals, rape young children, steal billions and crumble the economy, have roads and highways and even airlines that are all death traps ! No one is worried abt that! The education system in NIgeria is a shame to Africa! But Senate and the political body have to spends months writing a Bill on jail time for homosexuals who have not affected the nation in any negative way? Dont even get me started about the FAKE religions all practiced in Nigeria! The same God you all claim to worship and want to kill for is the same one Cursing you into the depths of darkness!! nothing has been done about Boko Haram and Jos where innocents get fried up all the time! What a Waste of Black People!

So something good has finally come out of this country. I will never criticize this country again.......despite the poverty, war, tribalism and corruption, jujuism...i still can't believe this good news. God bless nigeria..........If the churches in nigeria do not celebrate this...God i pray that you forgive them. They are going to withdraw their aid from nigeria and in the next few yrs sanctions....but all nigerians should rejoice today.

So let me understand this... 14 years for same sex marriage. But they can't get married in the court anyway cause it is illegal. So you plan to jail them if they got married in a private ceremony, even when the state doesn't recognize them as married? I see. And how will you know they got married? Cause someone reported it? How will you verify it? With pictures?

HOW CAN SO MANY DUMN PEOPLE LIVE IN SUCH A SMALL COUNTRY?

MY heart weeps and bleeds, not at this stupid toothless law, but at the wholesale deceit and hoodwinking of ignorant foolish Nigerians who are in the majority. We have no jobs, no roads, no securtiy - NOTHING!!!!! yet those thieves (many of them fuck young boys by the way) in the Nat'l Assembly have used this issue to divert Nigerians attention away from the real issues while they keep stashing billion $$$ away, I weep for my country, false, private jet buying religious leaders have planted hatred and false righteousness in your hearts! who told you that gay people will be punished while fornicators, rapists, public looters, fraudsters etc will be spared? I am yours truly,a young, handsome, well-educated Nigerian man, I am gay, and in spite of the venom from you ingnorant homophobes, i have learned to love and cherish myself. Many of you shooting off@ the mouth had better know that many of your fathers, brothers, husbands, boyfriends, fiances etc dey like man "toto", you're all just deceiving yourself, you can pass as many laws as you like, you can never wish gays away, you are simply denying yourself from the priviliege of very talented and gifted people as long as you keep promoting homophobic hate. I feel so sorry for my country people. How will this evil and obnoxious law create jobs, build roads, school, eradicate poverty, corruption etc. I feel so sorry for those who are not opportuned to travel to more sane places, for me; am right now booking my flight to several European cities where I shall proudly dance and march as a happy gay man "am here, am queer, live with it or fucking die", leave your curses(at yourselves of course), and comments, i'll respond to them when am back ... Ignorant, medieval, backward beasts! No wonder a green passport is worth nothing@ any major international Airport!!!

Ms.L said...

All of you that are praising God for this law being passed, saying that Nigeria still has morals and all that jazz...just remember, morals don't pay the bills or keep the lights on!

You guys are rejoicing over the actions of a small percentage of a population when you still live in fear of Boko Haram, graduating with no job prospects, and domestic abusers still roam the streets, putting fear into their victims.

I don't blame you - you're all so damn jaded about the streets you walk on that you can't even shine your eyes! The country has bigger fish to fry & here you are worried about and passing one law like this.

i am no one to hide my disdain for gay/lesbians. It's appalling, and personally, i believe it's just people who have warped childhoods or are demon possessed that end up doing that kinda stuff.

Its funny how so many people have come on here disguising under "anonymous" to slam this resolution and still claim to be straight.

I believe God never created any human being with a gay sexual orientation. Y'all gay and lesbian freaks really need serious deliverance sessions

Anonymous said...

I hunk the whole issue of morality should be looked at. Corruption is a major problem in Nigeria. How is it okay for a single person to acquire millions of foreign currency meant for the survival of the people. Taking food from the mouths of small children , clothes from their backs, denying them basic amenities like shelter, educatin and healthcare. These same idiotic corrupt satanic politicians get Air lifted to foreign countries when they suffer minor ailments and yet we don't even have ambulance services here. Gay bashing for the people and by the people is just a smoke screen. We need to priorities. Homosexuality is NOT important in the scheme of things. These politicians are Evil geniuses they know what to throw at the nigerian public to start a senseless feeding frenzy amongst thr people while they steal snd commit the most despicable crimes against their own people which I believe is the betrayal of your own.

Unknown said...

This is stupid and a serious human rights violation!!!! Nigeria is a signatory to the UN declaration of human rights, which says everyone has a right to family life. So if two men decide their family life with each other, itz within their rights!!!! & all u folks celebrating this, am sorry but u display ur ignorance!!!!!

Yes we have lesbians in Nigeria and sodomy has been here since God named this country Nigeria. Let us no hid behind hypocrisy to say it has not been practiced in this country. Take a look at our secondary boarding schools, under the guise of college mother little and innocent girls are lured in the act of lesbianism and become victims themselves. our young boys some even get raped by so called senior boys who need to express themselves but turn to this innocent young children thereby corrupting them . Ah a breath of fresh air to see that something is been done to salvage our society from perversiveness. Cuddles to all who did . Hey ! U that are still playing out those things u learnt in boarding schools U ARE THE WRETCH OF THE SOCIETY, MISFITS , AND MENTALLY SICK .

Unknown said...

Exactly!!!!

And what implication is that, pray tell??? That children raised by same sex couples will not display this homophobia/ignorance/hate u lot are spewing on this site?

Anonymous said...

Nope, blame the Western media and Dstv!

Anonymous said...

So wats ur suggestion? They tackle all the above simultaneously or not bother to tackle one all? Cos u'll still complain when you hear dey've tackled power supply only. Step by step my dear. You need to understand how evil homosexuality is and how deeply it has eaten into the western world, if we can nip this one at the bud now then it's a good thing. Remember dat any trend dat enters naija is overdone by Nigerians so better now dan later, if the boko haram rubbish was stemmed in the beginning we won't have had it dis Bad. Can u imagine dat amigo supermarket owners are amongst these terrorists and Abuja ppl have been helping them unkowingly by shopping der everyday?!
God help my country Nigeria!

Anonymous said...

Sweetie ders nothing biological about being gay! Unfortunately for you, you've bought into that white lie told by the West. It's a psychological thing. So should peadophiles be allowed to go on abusing children cos their "biological formation" makes dem enjoy sex only with children?? THINK!

If a gay person wants children he or she had better reproduce with his or her fellow gay partner. Nonsense

Okay, not a bad move, but I would have preferred to see the lawmakers take stringent action against the corruption and lack of accountability and transparency that has so underdeveloped and impoverished Nigeria and Nigerians.

On anti-gay legislation, it might be more useful to make it a very serious crime for anyone to lie about his/her sexuality before entering a marriage union. That way any one who catches the spouse with a same-sex lover can get some real compensation and justice!

Anyway sha, with the conservative nature of Nigerian society I very much doubt that same-sex marriage is a priority for Nigerian lesbians and prostrate denters.

If morality is the yard stick to judge the integrity of a country then my dear hypocrites, Nigeria carry last. When you are trying to weed your garden u don't just pull the weed from the surface of the soil you have to dig deep to get at the root. The root of the problems in Nigeria is not homosexuality. So lets not kid ourselves. Whether they put legislation to imprison same sex marriage or not. Nigeria is still what it is. An underdeveloped poverty stricken self delusional country. In fact you can be assured that the only benefit that will come out of this waste of time is that the developed countries will have more of a reason to keep Nigerians out of their countries.which I believe is wat we would like as these countries practice homo and are therefore living in hell while we angelic Nigerians are living in heaven .

Nigeria a nation blessed with natural resources = poverty stricken people who HATE homos. Britain no natural resources = rich nation ,invest in its people Homos live in harmony. Go figure!

3 Abortion illegal a crime punishable by bodily dismemberment.
Fat ugly girls posting bikini shots a crime punishable by starvation to kwashiorkor level.
Please be free to add a few more to the list.

There are gays and lesbian in Nigeria. Infact homosexuality is as old as the human race. Why are we so bothered about what people do behind close doors. There is nothing that i despise more in Nigerians as religious morality. Quick to judge others when you know you are the biggest sinner. There should be a law that will imprison corrupt officials for 100 yrs that's what we should focus on.

This law is a disgrace to Nigeria. It takes us back to the times when twins could be murdered because ignorant communities believed twin birth was abnormal. To be gay is a biological given. It's been here in every period of history. The ancient Greeks, showing greater wisdom than Nigerian lawmakers, accepted it. It was in the later Roman era, with selective interpretation of Christianity, that it became an issue. From India to the American Indians to Africa, gays were present. It was actually made illegal in much of the Commonwealth by the colonizing British. To fight gays means to fight nature's variety in creation. Let's not forget that many of the greatest minds in history displayed marked gay traits. I only mention the greatest known genius, Leonarda da Vinci. Our legislators would destroy our future Leonardos and Bethovens and Isaac Newtons and Walt Whitmans and Tchaikovskys and Prousts. That would be a terrible disservice to the people they represent.

i dont support sodomy, but i think most of this people that do it donot know what they do. they have to put an age gap like from 18 is life imprisonment, below 18 should stay for 1 year. at least. But still marriage they sweet o, una no want born pikin ni?
