Mrs Folorunsho Alakija is the richest black woman in the world?

That is if you believe Ventures Africa, an African business magazine and news service. According to them, Oprah Winfrey is no longer the richest black woman in the world, Mrs Folorun Alajika is. Forbes said in November that the billionaire oil tycoon is worth $600 million, but Ventures Africa put her worth at about $3.3 billion. They said her 60 percent stake in a $10.74 billion oil well is worth $6.44 billion.

VA also claims that Mrs Alakija's real estate portfolio is worth over $100 million, and that she acquired a property at One Hyde Park for $102 million, and also owns a Bombardier Global Express 6000 jet which she bought earlier this year for a reported $46 million.

@Leerato, if you went to the full report you would the part that says, I quote "Folorunsho Alakija is the founder of the Rose of Sharon foundation, a Christian-based charity which gives out small grants to widows."
And should she dash out all her wealth just because they are poor people in Nigeria? They would always be the rich and the poor, it's destiny, she worked hard for it, so deal with it.

Linda, Ventures Africa does not post flimsy reports. I follow them on twitter so I believe it is true. They cannot boldly come out to make this claim if they were not backed up by facts. This story has been featured in the Daily Mail UK http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2243106/Nigerian-oil-tycoon-takes-Oprahs-place-richest-black-woman-world.html, News One http://newsone.com/2095466/folorunsho-alakija-profile/ and NBC's The Grio http://thegrio.com/2012/12/04/oprah-winfrey-may-no-longer-the-richest-black-woman-in-the-world/

At Sam, nobody is asking her to spend all her money on the poor, the truth is that her impact is not being felt at all. Her so called foundation is not doing enough. She should try and create more job opportunities, that way people will benefit from her richies without pulling her down. See how many jobs the likes of Dangote,Adenuga, Jim ovia etc have created. Even Rochas before he became governor his philanthropic impact was felt.

Anon at 11:51am. Shes not the richest woman in the world.. read properly! Richest black woman...Also i find it sad that when people see successful rich people, they expect them to share their money to the masses in the country. All these rich people can do is try to help in a little way....The bulk of the work is in the individual effort you put to better your own life! Nigerians stop waiting for people to give money! and keep lamenting that people are suffering! hustle hard and use your head!! there are opportunities everywhere! Take risks!! Nothing comes easy. Alakija didnt get it easy..that im sure. Im gonna work hard and smart to be someone extremely successful...with the help of GOD ! WAKE UP NIGERIA.

My own is am not asking her to share her money or give us some, my question to her is whose money is she spending? She makes N154M a day from her oil bloc - who gave her d oil bloc? In a sane society oil blocs shd be run by govt and proceeds for d beneficial of every citizen of that country, I wonder why we stl have bad roads, epileptic power and bad hospitals and public schools when her likes, who got her oil bloc as gift from Babangida being a Taylor to his wife should be celebrated, our problem is in this country we celebrate mediocres and mediocrity and dd I hear someone say she looked into the future, what future if I may ask? D future that shd have given us free houses by 2012, free healthcare and so on that was bn advertised when I was young? I sorry for this country and revolution we truly need, am sure she's on top of herself that she's bn celebrated, our youth shd actually be crying if a woman almost 70 shd be celebrated for hitting so much money in her old age and she cannot even pick out LUTH as her widows mote to renovate up to d western standars cause she knows if she has headache she can take her chartered flight and run to US or London, I sorry for my country

counting wealth? Vanity

Anonymous said...

Guys, lets face some facts here and pls do not ascribe any unusual intelligence to the woman. Of cause maam with all due respect to your person. The bulk of her wealth is from the Agbami Field situated on OPL Blocks 216 & 217, of course these are oil blocks that are our common wealth and heritage that our leaders ascribe the rights to disburse at their whims and caprices to themselves and their cronies. The Agbami Block was give to her by one of our past leaders (under the company Famfa Petroleum)and Cheveron invested billions of dollars to develope that field. At some point the Agbami, where the Agbami FPSO is anchored was the biggest producing oil field in the world, where just one well was making about 10000 barrels of oil per day. The entire field istself has the capacity to make over 150,000 barrels of oil perday.
That field was developed without her 1kobo. So guys i don't celebrate such people. It simply brings to light to greed and selfishness of our leaders.

She runs 'Rose of Sharon' which is a charity organization for the less priviliged. Some people prefer to mask their philantrophy instead of shouting it to the whole world, so please check your facts before you condemn.

Anonymous said...

If this is true...then, I must say, she has a responsibility to do more for our country......Oprah has done so much for her country and beyond; sent thousands to school, enriched a number of people….....she has truly, visibly influenced many lives. With all the poverty and joblessness in this country, if a woman of this repute can help alleviate just 1%, it would go a long way. Although, I admire your hard work madam, I want to implore you to do more……..you may have done some work already, behind closed doors…..however, tremendous work can’t be hidden….as in the case of Oprah. This also applies to other Nigerians as well, when God has blessed you, reach out to help others……..just my two cents……

Anonymous said...

Seriously guys…how can you give an oil block to one citizen?(A natural resource that belongs to an entire nation) There is a special place in hell for people like this. A country where people live on less than a dollar a day? What became of Mariam Babangida? all the riches in the world will not take you home. You cant fly your private jet to heaven o! There is nothing worth emulating here. I worked at a bank previously and Famfa oil(Owned by the Alakija’s) was a client of mine. It was a mess. Their administration was horrible, and they permanently owed the Bank. These companies run by individuals like herself will take hefty loans and default because there is no real credit system in Nigeria. Most importantly, people wake up and smell the coffee. You are getting screwed by your own people and you dont even know.

Abby said...

I want to digress and answer that anonymous 9.32a.m that said the woman did not come from a village where a drop of oil is found...ehen?and so?You that came from where oil is,na ya papa put am there?this entitlement mentality that all of you from that region have is really really sickening!Don't get up from your lazy arse, siddon dia dey make rotten belle finish you.Nigeria's oil resources are for the entire nation!Na everybody property....

I think her story would have been more inspiring if she had made her fortune from the fashion business versus simply getting an oil exploration license. Kudos to her for what she did with it, but even if she is richer than Oprah, she could never be compared because Oprah actually built her empire. Nigerians need to celebrate people who made their fortune from actually doing something, and not via government patronage. And to all the odes mentioning the Waltons. Are the Waltons Africans or blacks? Think before you write (abi type).

Regarding this story, Forbes can only list people whose assets can be verified. This Folorunsho Alakija’s assets are too murky. There are several billionaires in the contrababnd trade, but Forbes doesn’t list them either. Forbes wants to encourage good citizenship through hard work, or at least, inheritance from hard work. Wealth earned from the theft of national assets do not qualify as hard work and such beneficiaries are not good citizens.

We need a revolution. What happened in Libya Tunisia needs to happen in Nigeria. We need to kill all of the, robbing this country dry.

Where was Dubia 20 years ago, look at it now.
The leaders choose to develop their country.

The danjumas , alakijas need to be sent to hell especially with their benefactors as its their likes making Nigeria a hopeless country.
We have no electricity, no roads, no health care. People are suffering.

Am ready to fight for Nigeria , this oil belongs to every Nigerian. No one family.
We need a honest military government to revoke all this oil blocks via decrees. Senators and reps are just rogues, they make almost a$1mm every year, they can't think for us.

Nigerian youths fight for your right, because it would never be given to you, I assure you

Reading through all my fellow Libers comments, i could have a feel of the woman whom i don't know at all. Never heard such names exist. Congratulation to her. She must have been using her money to better humanity and if not so, she had to. I have my own belief likewise everyone and let me chip in a little of it. Spending in service of God and humanity is where peace lies for the wealthy people. That's why wealthy dude like bill gate and his likes don't look back when they spend and are not afraid of spending thinking of shortfall. So my simple idea which i want to share is she should promote a quality environment. I'm an environment though on a small scale and i'm getting there gradually. Good that she operate oil sector and they know their contribution to that effect which is mostly on the negative sides. Our environment in this country needs attention if not urgent in some areas. Develop education through giving out schlarship to indegent student, providing amenties and promoting research. Helping the health sector especially those who can't afford their bill and sponsoring healthy issues. Lots of things she can't spend her wealth on and if it is only one she handle and do it well. The better for it. This is just a tip. I believe i will be wealthy and nothing will change my belief. Want to have a flat belly, burn fat, maintain your shape with fitness.
