Bill on birth control on the way?

GEJ&Sambo with national population commissioners after their swearing in yesterday
Seems like President Jonathan is considering making a law telling Nigerians how many kids they can have so as to manage the population of the country. Yes, you heard right!

There are indications he might sponsor a bill on birth control as a way of curtailing unrestrained population explosion in Nigeria. Continue reading...

President Goodluck Jonathan gave the hint yesterday June 26th at the Presidential Villa while administering oath of office to the newly appointed chairman and members of the National Population Commission (NPC). He said:

“For us to plan properly, we must manage our population, but it is extremely sensitive because we are extremely religious people, either as Christians or Muslims. Both Christians and Moslems and even traditionalists and all the other religions believe that children are God’s gifts to man, so it is difficult for you to tell any Nigerian to number their children because they are gifts of God and it is not expected to reject God’s gifts.

The key thing is how you will, through your advocacy, come up with plans and programmes that encourage Nigerians to have the number of children they can manage, before government comes up with clear policies and guidelines. First and foremost is the personal consciousness that people should get the family they can manage.

“Sometimes you get to the house of somebody living in a well-furnished duplex. There is the husband and wife and maybe two, three or four children. But the guard at the gate may have nine children. That is the scenario you have. So, first and foremost, before government comes up with regulations, guidelines or laws, Nigerians must be made to know that we cannot continue to procreate and procreate even though we know children are God's gifts." President Jonathan Goodluck

Oh well, i support the president on this one. and lol @ d example wiv security having nine children. dats s strong point cos dese days its usually the poor ones dat have more children and at the end of the day,dey can't cater adequately for them whereas the rich ones who can cater for as much as 10kids have btwn 2-4. as for me, i'm gonna have 2 or 3 so i can gv dem d best of wat i have. hope my future hubby will agree tho.lol

There is a time and a season for everything on earth. Right now, there are other pressing issues that need urgent attention, not birth control bill please. I wonder if our leaders consult widely, thoroughly and deeply before making some decisions - and once the decision is taken, no matter how much the people scream and shout, nothing will be done. God help us in this country

i totally agree wid u on dis 1.. Maximum of 4kids.. Buh dis is gonna b hard, considerin d fact dat muslims dnt take contraceptives... But birth control itself as its own disadvantages Oº° .. Anyway God wil c us tru sha..

There is already a law that you shouldn't have more than 4 children. People don't follow that. Also, some marry many wives and have many children.

Why is that? It's a good thing. He should really enforce the law. We're getting overpopulated. That is why there's so much 419, Boko Haram and other vices. Let this be the start of things to come.

Jonathan does not need the national population commission to control nigerian's population when Boko Haram and other Nigerian made disasters are already helping him out in that regard.

THIS IS A BRILLIANT IDEA. BUT AS IS WITH GEJ, WRONG TIMING AND APPROACH! WHY NOT EDUCATE AND ENLIGHTEN THE PEOPLE ON THE SAID ISSUE, BEFORE 'ENFORCING' IT AS A POLICY. I DO REMEMBER A MILITARY LEADER TRIED THIS ONE TIME, IT DIDN'T WORK, LET'S SEE HOW THIS ONE TURNS OUT. AS FOR ME, NEVER HAVE I BEEN A FAN OF MORE THAN 4 CHILDREN NO MATTER ONE'S STATUS FINANCIALLY OR OTHERWISE.

i find myself agreeing with him 100%. the poorest neighborhoods procreate like rabbits without knowing how they are going to provide for the kids. These kids then end up on the streets as touts area-boys, armed robbers etc. 4 children MAX per family.all ye in favour say aii!

Children are gifts from God no doubt about it but every living thing has the ability to procreate. Therefore hamsters, grasshoppers, fish, snails, monkeys also have this ability. What separates us from them is our ability to think!

Having 9 children etc just because you can or because you can afford it shows a serious lack of common sense.Population explosion is real and the attendant problems of pollution, inflation, widespread diseases, accoodation challenges, job insecurities etc etc are also real.

So am I in favour of some sort of law that would curtail the reproductive capacity of people?OH YES.
And Johnathan while you are at it could you address the other pressing issues Nigeria has???I know you know them so no need sounding like a broken record.

Just cos he can't hv children doesn't mean others shouldn't

Anonymous said...

I agrEe with him 100%!! Nigerians have way too many children and then taking care of d kids becomes a problem. This problem is more common with the poor people. ThEy know they r poor and r just managing, then they have like 10kids. All squashed up in a room or two! How would u take care of them kids?? They then send them off to become people's maids or to sell things on d street thereby putting the kids in danger (in both cases). Also, the rich Alhaji's produce kids like there's no tomorrow. Like having kids is going out of fashion soon so they have to keep up b4 it does. They marry countless wives then produce numerous kids. Its absurd! Soon, our numba would get to that of india or china

Fix the motherfucking problems in Nigeria! Then people will take the initiative to produce less children. Look at countries like America, Canada, etc people have a lot of things going on for them that having more kids will take most of their time and money. How will you tell a country with so much poverty and low level of education, and many jobless people to stop producing children at whatever rate.
This man is doing the right thing at the wrong time.

i think this is a very good idea!!! I have been going on for a while now that if nigerians refuse to implement family planning on their own it should be enforced. Look at China!!! if you can't afford that one extra child, then don't have that one extra child.

On the other hand, birth control has it's down sides and some serious side effects, and putting a quota on the number of children one can have is a complicated endeavour which might increase the abortion rate.

So with all the problems of Nigeria this is what GEJ wants to focus on. Our population is already very depleted by bokoharam, hunger, poverty, corruption. Combat those first and then you can talk about population that is if we still have any left by then. Mtcheeeeeeewwwwww

Moreover population is best combated by education because populatio control without education results to this: http://www.turtlebayandbeyond.org/2012/abortion/as-u-s-officials-call-on-chinese-government-to-protect-one-woman-from-forced-abortion-reports-of-second-womans-unborn-baby-forcefully-aborted-at-7-months-graphic-photo-warning/

way to go Mr. President. It's about time. But I hope that effective agencies and instruments for implementation and enforcement of the law are being taken into cognissance, so it doesn't end up like one of the numerous failed policies we have...for those of you wondering how this is going to help us now, well, it's a step in the right direction because it ensures the future is taken care of while tackling the present problems. The family is the smallest unit as well as an integral part of any society. If we can have peace and order at the family level, then our problem is almost solved! If parents have children within their capacities, then they can play their role role effectively. Like the president rightly pointed out, it is those of them who do not have the 'means' that keep procreating! For instance, a labourer and a hawker hook up, start living together in a batcher, start bearing kids in that batcher, can barely eat or clothe the children not to mention education. These kids grow up in the parks and get involved in all sorts of petty crime even at a tender age! They graduate to bigger crime, become thieves, liars, heartless criminals who did not even know the difference between good and evil from birth, touts, societal misfits instead of contributing positively to the society. Then also, there is the other scenario of rich, wealthy and influential parents who spare the rod and spoil their kids. The point I've been trying to make is that if the family is tackled, we ll make progress. The birth control policy is one measure, ensuring that the kids are taught the right values are another. As for peer pressure, if we all have wonderful families, then, we wouldn't worry about bad kids corrupting our kids!

This is absolutely ridiculous. If the government had done its job of not stealing from the people, and instead provided basic amenities for growth then maybe, just maybe the people could AFFORD to care for their children. It's not that we have too many people, it's that we do not have economic growth or the environment for economic growth for people to be able to take care of their children. It is because we have greedy people in government and in society. A growing nation is a healthy nation as long as the government isn't selfish and greedy. But our government is selfish and greedy and that's the problem, not the fact that people have children. My grandparents had 9 children and all of them went to school, granddad was in the military and grandmum was a market woman, yet they put their children through school, they could afford to take care of their children because they weren't selfish people.
Maybe just maybe if you guys in the government stopped stealing and cheating the people the people would have enough to eat. Stopping people from having children isn't he solution, no providing them with the infrastructure to cater for their children is the solution.
I hate comparing Nigeria to the U.S. but seriously a comparison is needed here. Nigerians that couldn't take care of their children in Nigeria were able to take care of their children in the U.S. why? Because they stopped having children? Mba nu o, it's because they had the infrastructure to be PRODUCTIVE members of society and therefore were able to care for their offspring. Give us the infrastructure and you will see that we are not over populated. You will even see that we have room for growth. We're overpopulated and yet people are dropping like flies thanks to high maternal mortality rate, infant mortality rate, bad roads leading to fatal accidents, electrocutions from PHCN wires, and the ALMIGHTY BOKO HARAM. It's not that we have too many mouths to feed, it's that we have parasites in government that feed only themselves. Bloody blokes.

Sandi says so via Blackberry Lambourghini 10!!!

But if we are to teach women proper birth control, we shouldn't enforce a financial burden on them and on the state and the environment. But instead should teach women how to properly observe their fertility through the different methods available, fertility awareness method, ovulation method, etc, and these are proven to be 99.99% effective. They can learn it for free and the best part is once they learn it, they've learned it, no need to keep spending money on it, so poor women as well as rich women can learn it. The woman also doesn't have to ingest chemicals (birth control pills) that are known to significantly increase the risk of breast cancer even to the point that the World Health Organization lists them as a Group 1 carcinogen, which means causes cancer in humans.
The woman learning her fertility has no risk of cancer, heart attack or stroke. Let's do better than our brothers in the West, now they have to pay health care costs of these ailments and they refuse to acknowledge that BC causes these ailments.

We are the biggest human exporter, so the bill has no meaning, the EU and USA will help block it in NASS, the western coutries need our men and women toi work in their factories, hospitals and other service companies. Checking population is already been done by Boko Haram, Kidnappings, Gas burning in Niger Delta, Road accident, plane crash, lack opf health insurance and facilities, building collapse, death as a result of poverty induced by our politicians from corruptions etc
Leave us alone to have many kids, it is our human right, that is the only thing that make us happy, afterall, we dont have anything from the government.

That has always been on my mind for ages. The way Nigeria's population continues to grow unchecked might lead us to anarchy someday. Most of the problems we have today in Nigeria could be indirectly traced to overpopulation. Take crime for example. When u hv too many sheeps there is the tendency for some to go astray bcos u've got only two eyes to look out for them, and even when one goes astray u get to notice when its already too late.

Meanwhile every sensible person who can walk & chewgum knows that population equals economic power. Population is not the problem people, corruption is. Why do you think we (Nigeria)stand out in Africa? Every investor knows that our population is about the only thing we still have going for us. Nigeria is the 7th most populous country in the world guess who is the 3rd? Yea u guessed right and not only is US the 3rd populous they are looking to expand it with loose immigration laws & plans to make Puerto Rico the 51st state. Guess why they beef China, ehen ooo because those ones are population no1 and they are not exporting human resources like we can like to do, instead every company & its neighbour outsources to China.
Another point to note we are not the most densely populated country as i'm sure one faffer go soon talk we are the 71st most densely populated way behind Netherlands(28th)where they are stupidly rich, UK(53rd) with its strongest currency in Europe and Germany(56th) who is the current saviour in the Euro crisis

A gateman has 5children more than his employer, yes educate him or better still his children and they will know the advantage of being able to educate all one's children but for goodness sake the number of children to have or to not have is not a government mandate no matter how worried you are

Population is not the problem people corruption is. All of you screaming yes, yes because years of brainwashing has convinced many of u dt we need our population trimmed. Naija is d 7th most populous country in d world. Guess who is no3? U guessed right. Not only is d US d 3rd most populous country in d world but its going to keep growing due to its loose immigration laws & in addition d debate is whether they shld make Puerto Rico d 51st state. The answer people is education, educate people & u don't need to control population. If d mallam has 9children educate the 9 of them and you have 9people who know that you have to provide the children you bring into the world all the basic needs and training they require to excel.
