Student finds N9.3b in his account and returns it. First Bank explains error...

Durojaiye Adeyemi Job, a 30-year-old100 level Higher National Diploma (HND) engineering student of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State, found a whooping N9.3 billion in his Savings Account domiciled at the institution’s First Bank plc branch.

But rather than touch the money, in a rare display of honesty, he alerted the bank’s authority, won himself a scholarship, and was hosted to a reception at the Lagos headquarters of his church, Mountain of Fire and Miracles by the Overseer Dr. D.k. Olukoya,

Adeyemi explains exactly how the error happened...

Adeyemi "It all happened on Friday August 13, 2010. I was going back home for the weekend and decided to cash N2, 000 from my acct, out of the N3, 000 that I had there. I inserted my ATM card, the machine dispensed N2, 000. I re-entered my password to check my balance and saw a balance of N9.3 billion! I was surprised. To verify what I saw there, I had to re-insert the ATM card to withdraw N20, 000. An amount which was more than what I had there. To my utmost surprised, the machine dispensed the money. That shows that the money is real. I printed out the receipt and went home because the bank had already closed then. I kept the N20, 000 with me and on Monday Morning, I went to see the bank manager and narrated the whole story to her and returned the N20, 000.

The institution will offer him employment - School PRO
"The management of the institution promise to give him scholarship for his HND programme and also when he finishes in the institution, he is offered employment.

First Bank explains error: It was a computer malfunctioning that enabled Mr. Adeyemi's ATM Card access funds in one of the Bank's internal accounts. This glitch was rectified within a few minutes. During that period, Mr Adeyemi was able to withdraw N20, 000 which is the maximum amount with-drawable for a single transaction. We all know that computers do malfunction. Stories of this nature abound globally. However First Bank has a very robust security measure in place that ensures security of our customer's data and their funds.

I'ld return the money but they're gonna have to give or promise me something in return, maybe like a job when im through with school or something.its a very lousy mistake by the bank and they should be made to sweat alittle..just sayin

It is not a big deal cos there are softwares specifically for tracking mis lodged payments, so by and large the bank would have found out. Be that as it may he had no choice,it is not his money so he has to return it; if he had spent some out of it nothing would have happened anyway....and again the banker who made that grievous mistake is careless right from childhood he or she should be warned.

I would withdraw just 100 million from the money and travel outta the country asap!!!!!!!! Its not like they have electronics that can track him down immediately or something.

WOW, this is a man who has a fear of God. This is rare in a country like Nigeria, God bless him.

Mehn, honestly i would have probably spend a lil bit of that money and ask for forgiveness later...lol. Ok, i will not spend it if they promise to give me a good amount.

Amazing young man!!! It shows there is still hope for Nigeria, we still have people of integrity. I pray we all imbibe this kind of virtue and learn not to be greedy or cut corners at whatever we do.

the comments on this story say a lot about we Nigerians. it was a weekend, he could have gone back on Sat & Sun to withdraw more money before the bank would find out about it so all those saying he couldnt have gotten away with it, that's bs.

honesty pays. Nigeria's future is bright and for the bank to award him a ascholarship with a future job prospects, what else is teh young man looking for. I duff my hat for him cos in the face of abject poverty hovering over almost a larger % of the citizenry, even if he coudlnt withdraw more than 60K, it's still the highest form of integrity and fear of God. I wish him the best for the future.
