Naomi Campbell's receding hairline

This pic was taken of the supermodel while on a fashion shoot for designer Dennis Basso in New York yesterday. The 40-year-old's vanishing hairline was put on show as she held her hair back as a stylist adjusted her clothing

Is this what happens when you fix weaves all the time? I never let my natural hair breath at all. And is there anyway we can prevent this from happening to our hair?

Which is why I admired Jada and children's touch of rocking their natural hair.

If you keep relaxing your natural thick hair, and not just stop there, fix heavy weave ons, or attachment (braids) for extended periods of time then of course your afro hair gets weaker and weaker till it gives up on you.

Naomi is worse I guess because she is in a very fickle industry, that is fashion, and competing with with the western standards of beauty which includes having long, soft, straight hair.

Add the fact that she (Naomi) started modelling really early, how successful she has been and the fact that she has this heavy, extra long weave on every runaway and you can imagine the degree of damages her extra long weave-on has on her hairline.

Dont forget that is we get older we get weaker, wrinkles, skin sagging and of course hair thinning out and its a nightmare!

Best thing to do is understand your hair and the best maintenance it needs. Do read my blog for more details

They should leave the poor woman alone now. She is 40 and on longer a supermodel, must they continue to rub it in that she's aging

@ Anony 3:16 PM; Naomi Campbell's hair loss has absolutely nothing to do with her age. She is suffering from what is known as Traction alopecia....

This is a condition that affects the hair due to excessive pulling and pressure to the hair strand. It is mostly prone to black women, not because of the nature of our hair, but because of the general way we tend to care for our hair (using the word care lightly).
Many black women do not actually care for their hair type properly. Whether relaxed or natural, if your hair over several months or years does not grow past a certain level (i.e past your shoulders, neck or chin) then the way in which you care for your hair is doing more damage than good.
I say this because many women have this preconceived notion that hair doesn't grow or stops growing, which is untrue.
Unless you suffer from a specific condition, your hair is always growing.
The hair on our head sheds (roughly 50-100 strands daily), so if your hair stopped growing, eventually it would lead to boldness because all hair strands on your hair would shed off.
To answer your question Linda:
A weave is not bad at all, infact it can aid the growth of your hair if used properly and more importantly if the hair underneath it, is not neglected during the period the weave in on, however the fact that you do not allow it to rest, I have to be honest is a recipe for disaster...sooner or later you will begin to see the effect and toll it will take on your hair strands (excessive breakage and thinning) particularly if your regime is to relax then weave.
Prevention of such condition:
Try researching the following which will at least give you a head start on better hair care:
1.) Maintaining healthy black hair.
2.) Protective styling.
3.) The PH balance of hair.
4.) Healthy hair care products.
5.) how to take care of hair while in a weave.

Hair in general is the same, no matter what race you are. The only difference is the actually hair pattern for diverse races, which determines how it should be cared for.
For example the hair pattern of black women in it's natural state is that of a coiled and course nature. That means our hair strands tend to be thick and will get dry easily needing plenty of moisture.
The best advice I will give any lady is to begin research on how to properly care for their hair...starting with the basics and I don't mean hair products. It is a myth to believe that any hair product will make your hair grow faster...They can only either stimulate growth or maintain growth, but they do not make it grow faster. Hair grows on average 0.5 inches per months..some people's may grow slower some may grow faster but that is the average for everyone.
So research should begin with the nature of your hair and how best it can be preserved.
I've been researching for the past two years on hair, specifically afro textured hair and I have learnt alot that has allowed me to change my hair regime to one that actually works and Yes! I've seen the difference it has made to my hair.
There is alot more to it than what I've written, but I do not want to turn this into an essay (A little too late? lol)...
Either way, that's just my two cent on the issue. Hope it helps.

Let your own hair breathe if u can. Do your research and take charge of how to let your hair grow. It is worth the try, weave and braids are fine, but can not be done like Naomi did it, regardless you have to take care of your hair, your own hair. I have not had a weave since 2006, I did try to get it again in Dec for d Holiday and it was weird I took it out immediately. My own hair is long enuf and soft enuf. Need help growing your own hair n managing it, email me Linda. Best wishes.

@ Mena...girl i applaud you for your comment...it's sad that as black people we don't understand our natural hair and what it needs...whenever i go out...all the girls would have their natural hair and black women would have all sorts of stuff on their hair in the name of fashion and then we wonder why our hair is not growing....if you want long healthy hair the best thing is to go natural and learn how to take care of your hair in it's natural state...and you can still look fierce with different style options... People were laughing at Jada's kids and yet they had full luscious hair while the weave goddess is losing everything on her head...ooohh the irony of it all

YEP! GO NATURAL! All this fake hair business will cause you to LOSE YOUR NATURAL HAIR...she (Naomi) loves providing the image that her hair is indian...and so Indian hair prevails and your true AFRICAN NAPPY KINKY FANTASTIC HAIR RECEDES...lol....sad but true.

I have been rocking my hair natural for almost 2.5 years so I don't fall victim to this nightmare

Well, this is why I admired Jada and her children's choice to rock their natural hair. (I am referring to your post on the outfit by Mrs Will Smith?)

It makes sense that if you keep relaxing your natural thick hair, and not just stop there, also add the trauma of dying, fixing heavy weave ons, or attachment (braids) for extended periods of time then of course your afro hair gets weaker and weaker till it gives up on you.

Naomi is worse I guess because she is in a very fickle industry, that is fashion, and competing with with the western standards of beauty which includes having long, soft, straight hair.

its not so much d weave i think.
She always has on a full head weave. our hair is most fragile around the edges so it is very important u let that area breathe from time to time.
Even when I braid my hair, i do not allow the stylist braid every single corner of my hairline.

She should go for skin cut & wear wigs only during outings & shootings.
I can't help laughing sha...hehehe

That's why you should wear your real hair sometimes instead of always wearing weaves. I believe some people are addicted to wearing fake hair.

Geez! Too much glue I think! The hair just withered away and died on her...sob...sob...

But...Hold up! Can't she do a surgery to fix this? I mean, they can fix everything on the body right? Why not her hair too? LOL!!

bless you MENA though most time we don't agree on things we agree on one thing...RELAXERS ARE THE DEVIL AND IF YOU ARE GOING TO USE THEM MAKE SURE YOU DO SOME HEAVY RESEARCHING. there are so many Nigerian women with receding hairlines though not as bad as that but still bad.

weaves and attachments aren't any better and even if you use them, make sure you allow your hair to breathe once in a while.

lol...God knows what is underneath the weaves of the so called Lagos big girls

Apologies for posting twice Linda :)

Thanks Skank and Wannabe, you have said it all :)

We need to consider what damages we do to ourselves so when katakata burst, we accept that its our fault.

One comment really hit me, and that is by Lil miss make it deep: // Whether relaxed or natural, if your hair over several months or years does not grow past a certain level (i.e past your shoulders, neck or chin) then the way in which you care for your hair is doing more damage than good.//

serious food for thought!
