Over 100 people burnt to death in accident on Benin-Ore Expressway

That's a photo from the scene sent to me by a LIB reader. The accident occurred this afternoon at Igbogui village in Benin and involved three heavy duty vehicles; a Young Shall Grow Motors luxury bus, a fuel tanker with registration number GA 71 XA, and a Dangote truck carrying cement.

Over 100 people were burnt to death when the fuel tanker exploded following the accident. The fire spread to surrounding shops and burnt several cars packed nearby. Survivors have been rushed to the hospital while rescue efforts by the Federal Road Safety Corps & Civil Defence Corps continues.

Better Roads, and survelliance on those fuel tanker drivers, it is not a coincidence that these accidents always involve fuel tankers.

Better still, stop transportation of fuel by road. Over a thousand people have lost their lives to this Hazard.

God take control.

Anonymous said...

Dangote again???? There should be lots of law suit against this company by now. When is it enough for you resilient and long suffering Nigerians. Should this company not be banned from Nigerian roads until it pays for every one of the thousands of lives it has destroyed.

Just this morning, Pastor Chris posted in his blog "The Lord says: "Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. All who rage against you will surely be ashamed and disgraced; those who oppose you will be as nothing" (Isaiah 41.10, 11). Meditate on this; and for 15min at 12noon and 10pm (local/GMT) we'll pray fervidly in the spirit and also pray specially for truck/tank drivers in your city against ghastly accidents involving them. God bless you." and see what happened in the afternoon. Oh, if only good men will arise and pray...imagine what the story would have been???

Linda I was at the scene of the accident. Arrived there about 20 minutes after it happened. Terribly gory site human beings burnt to deaths, their lifeless charred bodies on the road, evidencing the cost of a Nigerian life. The accident itself a perfect example of carelessness and reckless negligence of Nigerians. Although the death count isn't 100 as stated (about 70) but life is life and it should be treasured

Is it just me or what? Why are Dangote trucks always involved in ghastly accidents with loss of lives?? Today alone, over 70 people died on Benin-Ore road and Dangote truck was involved and in Bauchi, another dangote truck rammed into a house, killing 3 people.. It is well...

Oluwa oº°˚˚˚°º‎ .wot is all dis LORD?????????????

I was at the accident scene. I got there about 30 mins after it occurred. gory scene. The lifeless charred remains of hitherto passengers lay bare on the ground envicing the cheapness of a Nigerian life and once again show casing recklessness of road users and the negligence of our government. Although the death toll isnt 100 as stated (more like 70 ) but all the same the cost of life in Naija is just close to nothing. I pray for the deceased may God be wih their families. We need to really change in this country.

May the souls of the departed rest in peace. I commiserate with the families affeceted by these losses at this time. This is an avoidable national tragedy. The roads are bad, riddled with pot holes contributing to accidents. A lot of Nigerians are operating under tension, anxiety because of the situation in the country, drivers inclusive! Must the fuel be transported by road? Must the cement be transported by road? No! The rail system to the rescue! We need a government that will take the bull by the horn and enforce transportation of petrol, diesel, cement etc by the rail system. Fuel can also be transported via the pipeline system but we know why this system is not working. What was the mode of transportation of petrol and goods up till the 1970s? Who destroyed the rail system? Are we going to sit by and watch this senseless recurrent tragedy? Nigeria needs a government that is birthed in integrity to address this problem. Until we change, the tragedy will remain because it has been a recurring problem. It is indeed a sad day for us!

Nigeria foolish country with very foolish decisions and majority of the citizens dull and retarded. Shamelessly, we have federal road safety corps mixed with civil defence corps responding to an emergency. When all we need is to grab all their budgets and build a reputable FIRE AMBULANCE POLICE and a HIGHWAYS AGENCY to maintain federal roads after the damage.

Disgraceful nation, pardon my mood I have just been insulted by my friend who showed me a documentary http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qc1KY_0XpOU of Nigerians in Lagos with one Treasurer of NURTW in Oshodin. If you are bothered enough watch part1-5 and see how rotten the country is. Citizens are corrupt too. Its a general problem.

Apparently we were ahead while it happened behind. I agree that the number of Lorries n trucks on the road dat friday were many causing terrible traffic. The Tanker was going to Benin close to where the accident happened DANGOTE cement truck was overtaking the tanker at the same time the YOUNG SHALL GROW Bus was also trying to overtake Dangote truck as well some how some how there was a swerve and dangote truck scrached the tanker that was how it stated. What am still trying to understand is how the THREE DRIVERS escaped UNHARMED. Where the incident happed was a valley so the fuel concentrated on that spot consuming everything in it's path including those selling along the road and all the shops that were open nearby. One more thing a lady and her daughter from the bus survived but the mother later died at the hospital.
